Candle Powered Heater! (Improved!!) DIY Radiant Space heater! (with fan!!). Easy DIY. Produces 170F+ Temps. Since about half of all the heat from a clay pot heater is typically concentrated at the top of the heater, it just quickly rises straight to the ceiling and is "in effect" lost (or at least "not felt"). this new design attempts to tackle that problem by directing the hot air where you want it (in your personal living space, not at the ceiling). in this new design a vent tube and fan combination is used to trap all of the heat not radiated outward from the sides of the pot and directs that heat into the living space!. fan is a standard 80mm computer case fan (handles the heat fine). the bolts are 2" long (5/16 hex bolts) *not 2 1/2" as stated in video although 2 1/2" or 3" ones should work fine. vent tube used is 5" but buy the right size to fit the flower pot you have.

Some people might think the future holds floating cars, robots and AI... I think it holds humans learning how to artistically use all of our junk to turn our lives into functioning works of art. This reminds me of a book I read as a kid, ISPY Fantasy, and one of the themes was outer space and there were cheese grater and tea kettle space rockets. Haha, I love it!!!

I made a variant of that. I used the same large candles but with clay sewer pipe cut at 24” with a clay cap at the top . I used a flower pot bottom. I really heats my room. I got a ton of candles cheap . I costs me almost nothing to heat my place now. 45 degrees outside now and 65 inside . Nice type of heat too. The candles last for almost 12 hours!

A suggestion: Instead of an electrically powered fan, try a heat powered wood stove fan. They go for as little as $35 on Amazon. No electricity needed and just as good as an electric fan at moving air.

Nice work and relatively easy to make! You could even use a lithium rechargeable 9 volt battery even as they are surprisingly inexpensive. If you wanted the candles to last a lot longer you could use candles made from Crisco vegetable lard. I remember seeing Crisco on sale for $2.50 for a 500 gram block. You could just microwave the block of Crisco and make your own simple candles and the candles would burn much longer. Great idea and great video!

I've made some Crisco burners before, easiest way to pack them is a double boil set up. Same way you melt chocolate on a stove top. Way safer as it doesn't need to be boiled or too thin. Depending on the end container, you can even use a hair dryer to warm it up and scoop the Crisco in. That will provide enough heat to fill the gaps with a little manual manipulation.

How long will the fan work until it burns out from the heat? If I may make a suggestion to this; Instead of just using the Elbow and putting the fan in the front to pull the heat and blow it through the fan, why not have a "T" instead? Put the fan in the back of where it is now, at the top of the "T" and blow the air out of the same exhaust hole, the other side of the top of the "T". It will act as a siphon, blowing the air out the front, at the same time it's drawing the heat as it's rising from the bottom. This way your fan will last much longer or not fail prematurely. Once the SHTF (no pun intended) there will be lots of car batteries and voltage regulators to choose from to recharge via solar/wind power. Just a thought.

I've seen a lot of designs for these kinds of heaters... I like this one a lot. It seems less dangerous compared to others and maximizes the usage of the heat. Quick question, does the fan create enough air flow for the flames to burn hotter? If so that may cost the candles a little quicker.

Well done.. It's simple idea but great results, I do like it. And just a quick response to the guy who suggest to buy a wood stove from Amazon.. etc. I would like to say.. first of a wood stove always needs a chimney, I believe, which makes the cost increase later in addition to that, it can't be moved from one place to another..

While people are measuring the heat right where it comes out, how much does it actually heat the room and how big a room does it heat? Also, does it actually make a difference in the winter time in cold climates?
@cdubmusic1
@cdubmusic1 9 ай бұрын
These are some of the questions I wanted to ask since I started watching videos on ways to heat up a band practice studio. After building several heaters I discovered that there is no right answer for this. I always use plastic to close off a small section that is needed. Everyone lives in different climates and houses are insulated differently. So closing off the small are I want to use seems to be ok for these kind of heaters. But there is no way any heaters like this are keeping a large room or entire house warm unless it is well insulated.

thats an awesome idea. i will try it out. i currently have no way to heat my house other than a 800 watt generator that barley runs a 400 watt ir heater and a tv. trying to live with little income is hard. thank you for this video i might actually sleep a bit warmer.
@ben8090
@ben8090 7 жыл бұрын
blackops84321 I doubt if you can heat the whole house. Insulation of the room/ area that you are trying to heat up is a Major factor. I built a similar one for my hallway. 1.2m x 1m. Two flower pot s and 6 tea lights. in minus 6 outside front double glazed door you could feel a slight difference after a few hours. ....ie it took the chill off the hallway.

Interesting idea adding the fan in an elbow. Single wall flue pieces (including elbows) also come in black, which some might find more attractive. Perhaps one of those wood stove fans powered by a TEG would do something similar, and you wouldn't need a wire from power source- the heat from the pot energizes the fan for circulation. Anyway, great idea.

Just a suggestion. Use a Peltier to produce Electricity from the heat to run the fan. Then all you need to buy is the candles. Or instead of candles, you can use a Lamp burner with a wick and a jar, you can use any lamp oil. cheaper, hotter and lasts longer No outside electrical current needed. It will produce its own.

@imlittlelaura

Hi, Laura here from Tiny House Ontario. I think you can get quite a lot more heat out of this. instead of using a penny on the pot put a large washer on top and put a large bolt through it. Then on the other side add another big washer and then a nut and as many of these as you can get on that bolt you installed. The metal is a big heat convector and should create a lot more heat in the inside. I hope you will give it a whirl.

I love this channel and make lots of his Eco gadgets. These are effective but paraffin candles are smelly. Best to use pure vegetable oil , with salt candles and cotton wicks. Pots do crack if heated to quickly so it’s best to heat ceramic very slowly and then leave them in a fireproof area. Best to leave candles on ceramic plates not metal. I’d advise against paraffin tea lights as they get to hot and will burst into flames.

@gregorykusiak5424

If the hole in the inner small pot isn’t plugged, it won’t get nearly as hot to radiate to the smaller air mass between the pots. It’s the surface area of the inner pot that couples with the air in the larger pot that makes this effective for heating.

You can buy clay pottery "candle heat" and they are round and do not have a hole in the top. They look like if you took a round ball and cut it in half and then have a space between the two halves. the candles are set in the bottom half and you have a wire frame so the top half is held up. you can find them on the web and they start at about 60.00 depends on who sells them, They say they work, have never tried them.

Turn the direction of fan flow 180 degrees and blow the air in, this way the fan will operate at lower temperature and last longer, also the outlet where the heat comes out will be the bottom. The air will flow thru the chamber between the first and second pots, but the base might need to be redesigned if it puts out the candles, offset the height in the bases to allow the air flow from putting out candles if needed. But i did that with an electric heater that couldn't heat my room, but i put a fan and the needed ducting work and blew cool air thru the fan while the fan blew across the heat coil and the old hot air exit on the heater became the cool air inlet, and the old cool air inlet became the hot air outlet next to the floor, it then heated the entire room with warm floor. But i also put heat shielding on the electrical switches since i reversed the heat flow. and this was an old heater made of 100 % steel body. I would never try with todays garbage.

candles releases some smoke too . How does the walls looks after few days of using this ? Or the smoke is retained by the smaller pot ? Any signs of smoke on the walls ?

Here’s what I see but I haven’t tried it. Eventually the cold moving air will cool the pots faster than the candles can heat it. It may still blow warmer air but it may not be noticeable. When you first plug the fan on with the hot pots it will blow hot I don’t doubt that. This is much better candle heater than the ones with out a fan to distribute the heat.

Need moar candles and a regulator on the fan speed so it blows faster when it's hotter, kind of like how it already works with a CPU. Now if only candles put out more BTU...

A PWM fan control circuit, maybe using a capacitor and relay to save the battery’s power for longer is what I’m thinking - vary the size of the cap for the relay trigger.

You could make it work better if you put bricks on all 4 sides.use the bricks that have holes in them.

This is interesting. I have a question though. Why put a fan on a radiant heat source?
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 3 жыл бұрын
hi. main reason is because so much heat comes directly off the top and goes straight to the ceiling. i wanted to capture and direct it more out into the living space (bottom half of the room) where you can feel it.🌞

I use charcoal in mine. I dont care for the smell much. I especially dont like the kingsford charcoal but it does light easily. I find if I place it out on the deck till it goes grey,then you dont get that lighter fluid smell. I have to be careful not to use too much charcoal because it gets too hot. I just crack the window a little and its fine. I want to make a bigger unit but I am afraid I would melt the fan.

I think these 'heaters' are a really good idea however, if some of the heat radiates out of the side wouldn't it be a better if you used a square to round hopper that completely surrounds the plant pots.The square to round hopper then attaches to the lobster back you have already. All of the heat would then be forced to travel through the fan. It may be more economical. Just a thought.

I am following the pot heating thread and saw your ingenious add on. I giggled and thought right you plug in fan during an outage and then I think you said it was a 9 vlt solar pwered one. I am also wondering why you cant use small oil filled glass bottles instead of tea candles. Maybe its the convienience and $ ratio...anyways you rock with your fan..loved it

Just as an added thing......put 5 gallon water bucket in front of said heater...with 4gallons of water in it...after about an hour or so one has hot water for a cup RV shower. It would have been nice to have last winter in Texas.

what does this mean for heating the room though? sure at that exact spot you hit 150 degrees, but after running for say a half an hour what would a thermometer in the room change? From say 60 to 70 or from 60 to 60.2??? That is what really matters.

I would think that this is a small heater and would work best in a closed up small room. Like Den or bedroom.
