Born in Berkeley California and raised in the Bay Area, Mike Dowling is a former U.S. Marine Corps military working dog handler and author of the critically acclaimed book Sergeant Rex: The Unbreakable Bond Between A Marine and His Military Working Dog (Atria books of Simon & Schuster). He and his military dog, Rex, were part of the first Marine Corps dog teams deployed to the front lines of combat since the Vietnam War. They operated in an area known as the "Triangle of Death" and were tasked with searching for the deadly improvised explosive devices (IEDs). They were awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for their actions. He has traveled across the country sharing his story and the value of military working dogs.

I pray all military dogs are placed with loving homes when they retire or are hurt. They served their country and deserve to live the rest of their lives with honor, dignity, and love.

what they don't tell you is that after the Korean and Vietnam war, all the 'props' were left behind when the troops left...including the dogs. The government wouldnt risk bringing them back to western soil in case they carried diseases...so the dogs were either shot, or they were set loose to fend for themselves. There is a brilliant documentary about this somewhere on KZfaq... many of the soldier dog handlers still get reduced to tears that they left their comrade behind...

They recently changed the status of MWDs so that they are deemed soldiers not equipment. It's a little late, but at least they get the respect they deserve.
