Cannas are a beautiful tropical looking plant. They are not winter hardy in my zone but luckily, they are easy to lift and store. I'll show you how I store my Cannas for the winter in this video.
I garden in Zone 3, Saskatchewan, Canada. My are has an average of 110 frost free days. The majority of our moisture comes in the form of snow in the colder months, with sporadic rains the rest of the year. I grow ornamentals and vegetables in ground, raised beds, and containers.

I live in Illinois and I just dig them up every year and put them all in a garbage can with some dirt and put that in the basement and come spring just put them back in the ground. I don’t cover them with nothing. I love the way these plants come out every year. They look beautiful and I plant small flowers next to them and once the cannas start producing leaves the shade is perfect for the flowers and they bloom beautifully

Great and simple process you explained there. I remember helping an older man at my church plant huge beds of canna lilies in front of our church. I'm aging my self now as this was back in the 70's. Lol I think I was an older teen then. I had a love for plants back then like you do. The older man was great to work with as I learned alot about planting and caring for them from him.

The bulb can be much smaller. They can divide down to thumb size pieces. It’s best to have several that size for a good display. They do multiply quickly.

Great video. You gave me some good ideas. Here, in zone 7a, cannas can be left in the ground with just the cut stalks layed on as a mulch. Doing that makes them difficult to divide because of their size after a couple of years. I'm going to purchase new ones and put in my containers. I can give the others away. Thanks.

I like to grow them in containers because they are easy to lift. I put some in the ground this year and just left them. I have so many I decided it wasn’t worth digging those ones back up.

Yea, working on them since yesterday but now I have more information that I did not actually is not that difficult Last year I just move all my Cana lilies to indoor porch which stays warm and makes the plant think u are in the tropics or do laugh out loud! But eventually the leaf’s dry, I just left them on the pot till spring. But this spring I decided to plant them in the ground and they flower finally I had this plants got 3 yrs 2 on a pot 1 on the ground so now I am doing the winterizing thing and plant them in the ground correctly in the ground; the other big problem is the darn dear but that a different issue to deal with for another day and season juggalo and juggalattes plus pandas and little monsters u all have a great time with ur Cana lilies be safe. Many thanks 🙏🏾

I guess there's variations in how to store. Some say to wash all dirt off and dry, and put in box or wrap in paper, and some say you can leave roots.
@PrairiePlantgirl
@PrairiePlantgirl Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on your climate and storage space for what works best for you. I knew a person who said she just dug hers up (she had hundreds) and threw them on the floor of a storage locker for the winter. I think the most important things are that they don’t freeze or stay wet.
@Jakub-ri7ro

i just hose the dirt off, and then let them dry under the sun for a day, and then screened bag, or just a cardboard box, and store them in the basement

Great to hear you have a method that works. Could you add your general area or climate? Different methods work for different climates. How warm is your basement?

Could I please get some advice? A neighbor dug up a bunch of cannas and tossed them out as trash. I found them while out for a walk and ended up bringing home as many as I could carry...which was a lot! I planted some in pots because my husband doesn't want them planted in the yard. I ended up putting a lot in each pot. I was just trying to get them potted as quickly as possible because I was running out of daylight! The ones left over, I'm giving to my friend and they're in a garbage bag with wet paper towels wrapped around their rhizomes/roots. It's quite hot here and I'm trying to keep them alive until she gets them in a few days. Do you think they'll be ok left in the garbage bag inside our garage until then? And also...is it ok to have multiples of cannas (6 or 7) in a bigger pot? These are not very big plants. Do they mind being crowded into pots? I'm not really familiar with them so any advice would be appreciated!
@PrairiePlantgirl

Cannas can vary widely in their size and water needs. Canna roots grow large and are very strong. That many in one pot will likely cause them to break the pot. Trying to keep that many watered and fed enough in a single pot is going to be difficult if not impossible. I usually recommend 1 per 5 gallon or smaller pot. I have a short growing season so that works. With one in a 3 gallon pot after 4 months the sides of a plastic pot are pushed out. As for the ones you’ve stored, are they getting strong light? Are you in an area where they are currently growing (not dormant)? Cannas require lots of light and moisture. However sitting in a plastic bag you’ll need to be careful they aren’t laying in water or the rhizomes could rot. I’d say it’s worth trying if you can keep the paper consistently damp, but not soggy and they have strong light. Open the tops of the bags so there is some oxygen exchange. Good luck.

@@PrairiePlantgirl Thanks so much for your reply! Yes...the cannas were still growing when the neighbors dug them up. No blooms though. I guess I'll have to find some more pots! We live in planting zone 8a so we usually have fairly mild winters with just a few spurts of really cold nights where it might get into the upper teens but that's more rare for us. Would it be ok just to cut them back and leave the rhizomes in pots in our garage over the winter since it doesn't get super cold here usually? The ones in the bag in our garage get some light since the garage door is open during the day. My friend will be here in a few days to get them. Hopefully, they'll all survive and she'll have good luck with them. Some of these had some damage to the rhizomes. The same neighbors who tossed these out had trashed a few cannas earlier in the summer which I also GOT! A couple of them also had some rhizome damage but I potted them and they seemed to do fine. These are smaller plants. Can they be brought inside as a house plant and survive? Or will they die at the end of the season anyway? Thanks so much for your help!

Do you have to wait tell it browns to dig the bulbs up to harvest for next year?
@PrairiePlantgirl
@PrairiePlantgirl 2 жыл бұрын
Most sources I’ve found say wait until it has been blackened by frost. That doesn’t usually happen for me before I want to get them cleaned up. I usually wait until they’ve had a light frost or two and the weather is cool so they aren’t still actively growing.

You will have to experiment for your climate. I find cannas are not very fussy about what they are stored in here. Try it but check often and if they are shrivelling or getting soft or mouldy you may need to change to something else.

I don’t always get a killing frost before the cannas need to be stored. If you can put them somewhere just above freezing to let them die back while you are away that is optimal. You can lift them out of the soil with the foliage attached to make that easier. They don’t need lighting or water. If not, cut them back and store them. The rhizomes might not be as strong the next year. Check them when you return to make sure they went dormant and are not rotting or sprouting in storage.
