In this video I want to show you how to lift Cannas grown in the ground, cut them back and then repot them for storage using a simple heated area within the greenhouse. All in preparation for planting them out next spring. #cannas #gardening

A very nice video again!!! From my personal experience here in North Greece zone 8a I NEVER dig out my cannas from the ground! I just leave them either in pots or in the ground and each year they are coming back stronger and better! Moreover, the ones that I have them on the ground they almost get only rainfall during the summer and they cope well with the extreme temperatures and the drought climate! In conclusion they are hard to kill plants and need no care , and especially you don't need to dig them out from the ground!

I really wish I had a greenhouse. My canna lifting is far more involved since I do not. But I must say my favorite part of this video is that Japanese Maple behind you at the end. Shazaam! That thing is gorgeous!

it's a beauty isn't it. It's a 16 year old 'Osakazuki' such intense colour, unfortunately it's now been blown off onto the ground?!

Lots of great tips - thanks so much! I'll be trying this for the first time this year, so this is super helpful. I like your camera work - it helps to show off your other lovely plants while showing you at work - nice touch! New subscriber here - looking forward to learning more from you ☺️

Nice, but I live in a very snowy area of the NE US, we get to -20F. I have to dig my rhizomes up, wash them, dry them for weeks and then store them in a cool dark place....would have like to have seen that type of storage.

Nice garden ;) a word of advice please - I’ve bought canna angelique two weeks ago, very nice dark purple foliage. It has almost full day of sun and I water it every morning before it gets hot but the leaves starting to turn green :( they look healthy, they don’t twist or go dry, but the beautiful purple is gone. Do you have any idea what is going on? Thank you 🙏🏻

Very interesting, I 'm a Canna Lily collector but I do leave everything in the ground since I live in a sub tropical climate frost free here in Malta, I do love cannas a lot! , may I ask you please what's the name of the red plant seen at 0:52?, thank you & keep it up mate.

Hi Antoine, i'm not jealous at all of your climate! they must grow incredibly well with you. The red leaved plant is a Cotinus aka Smoke Bush, very tough plant, you can leave it to grow to full size, probably 7ft or so and a similar spread or you can pollard it very hard and keep it compact and that's what I've done with that one in the vid as it's permanently planted in a large pot, you can do the same with plants like Eucalyptus, it's a really handy way of growing them in a confined space, hope that helps!

How cold does it get there? I live in zone 7a in USA. This was my first year planting cannas. Just wondering if I need to dig them up and store for the winter.

@@jerrywhite3095 .. you don’t need to lift them up for winter at all..,they happily stay in the ground ( even with 2wks of snow covered ground ) & multiply over winter......my Harrow house had a giant display of it gathered over 23 yrs.with harshest winters ever.. & thrived ( small tuber put in the ground to start with )

@@user-be5xr9zc6p . Thank you very much! I just cut them down to ground level. I think I will just put some mulch over them for the winter to help protect them from the cold. One last question for you. At some point, they do multiply like crazy. Can I take a sharp knife and cut a few off in the spring and transplant them somewhere else?
@user-be5xr9zc6p
@user-be5xr9zc6p 3 жыл бұрын
@@jerrywhite3095 .. if you hadn’t cut it back , the foliage would’ve covered the surface & protect it ( i used to clear it in spring) but that’s fine .., mulch it & it needs it too.., & yeah.. you can divide them & cut them from the sides..as long as you have 3-4 pointy ends on top which will sprout in spring
