I’m so confused as to why she keeps sayings things along the lines of “simple” and “not so technical” Ultra precision, immense speeds, and groove without any exhaustion The dudes are pretty relaxed in a way but their music is the definition of unforgiving

Sure it's not Spawn Of Possession... but it's still way more technical than a lot of DM bands (Obituary or Entombed for example). For me Cannibal Corpse are like the most technical you can get before being considered Technical Death Metal (for me stuff like Suffocation is technical enough to be considered TDM)

When I heard that I had the same reaction... As a drummer I have to say that playing cannibal corpse is a pain in the ass. No one has the energy to play the kind of blast beats of Paul holding the sticks like they're fucking hammers. A ghost note of Paul sounds like every other drummers rim shot.

Cannibal Corpse is by far THE top selling deathmetal band of all time. And they have accomplished that without selling out even a little bit.
@rampface85
@rampface85 6 жыл бұрын
The things I like about Cannibal Corpse are exactly the reasons you gave in the review. Their music doesn't take itself too seriously and just wants to be entertaining. Plus I really like their songwriting. All of the guys aim to write memorable songs and I think they hit the mark most of the time. You could argue that the guitar playing is not technical (I disagree) but there's also value in writing a riff that fans can play. Musicians needs those type of gateway bands and Cannibal Corpse does the best job of holding the door for the death metal entrance. Would we even be talking about them anymore if they went in another direction? That's kind of the key to their longevity. You can always depend on consistency. There's no "bad" album in their discography. I love these dudes. 4/5 Skrulls.

Not technical? who would say that. It is a hard nailer, to follow Pat 'o Brien and his insane tempo/diminished style riffs. I promise you, that CC is nothing near a easy technical piece of a guitarplayers day. The thing with CC, is that they have a more limited drumspace, when it comes to patterns. But the guitars/bass is of another world at times. Alex Webster/o'brien are insane players. And they show it. Ask any tech death band out there about that, if you think otherwise.

rampface85 Not technical? Two words...Frantic Disembowelment. They aren't considered "Tech Death"...BUT I don't see any "beginners" taking on much of Cannibals discography...if any at all. Maybe "The bleeding"? Or "Scourge of Iron"? But even those songs are pretty hard for a beginner to take on. I'd say a good GATEWAY death metal band that most people could probably play is "Death". Chuck wrote memorable, catchy riffs. It wasn't about how technical he could be, because he showed us what kind of player he can be with all of his solos...other than that, it's alot of his signature pedal tones and rhythm based riffs. I'm not saying that the occasional beginner that picks guitar up quickly can't play alot of Cannibal songs...but you'd be hard pressed to find many of them out there that can do it. I honestly just don't get why this chick mentions over and over and over again as "simple"...they aren't simple by any means, and people that think death metal HAS to be technical is annoying to say the least. You want technical death metal, listen to Necrophagist...I promise you it gets old quick. I'd rather listen to catchy riffs over and over again than a million notes a minute over and over again...and cannibal knows that, that's why they spread out their technical ability and catchy songwriting. They want to make music that LASTS, and that's the point.
@mrbtapir
@mrbtapir 6 жыл бұрын
Riffin' Remmy I think when they say 'not technical' it's not so much 'not difficult to play' (It is) it's more it's not really twiddly riffs and wanking. It's just straight up riffage.

As someone who generally doesn't listen to that much metal nowadays, I find Cannibal Corpse to be "fun". As in I'm just really having a good time listening to their stuff. Is it technical? In parts yes, but mostly its fairly simple, heavy as fuck metal with no bullshit and that's what I love about it. The lyrical content is over the top, riding the fine line between cheesy and genuinely interesting. I listen to metal when I want to have fun and CC is just that. Fun as fuck.

Another Wretched Spawn lover here. When I listen to Cannibal Corpse it is usually one of these 3 albums, Wretched Spawn, Torture and Tomb Of The Mutilated. Used to be Wretched, Kill and Tomb but Tortured replaced Kill in my Top 3 cannibal corpse albums. Tomb Of The Mutilated is a classic of brutality and ticks all the boxes I love about oldschool Thrashy death metal from sound to riffs, Torture has the windy spot currently (who knows, maybe Red Before Black replaces it. I have not listened it properly yet) but Wretched Spawn stays as my number one favourite Cannibal Corpse album ever.

I would say limiting the band to only 2 eras based only on the vocalists does a disservice to the contributions of the other band members (/songwriters), namely, in my biased opinion, Jack Owen, Pat O'Brien, and Rob Barrett (particularly since re-joining the band). A Jack Owen song sounds different than a Pat O'Brien song, etc.. That's my opinion anyway. Thanks!

Thanks Sarah 👍 I can understand why the Banger crew choose to review the "big" releases of the week but how about giving each reviewer a monthly slot where they could review a handful of albums that they recommend checking out. Well said Sara. I'm a huge Cannibal fan but I love bands like Cryptopsy and Nocturnus too. P.S. Six Feet Under aren't that bad. So sick of the hate they get. I will agree that the last 4 sfu albums have been pretty weak but their earlier stuff is good meat and potatoes Death and roll. Yes I do agree that the graveyard classics suck big time. Wish Chris would stop doing those.

i also like six feet under and i think they don't deserve as much hate as they get.granted, they can't do covers to save their lives i'll admit that graveyard classics suck and should be discontinued but six feet under's original songs are usually damn good and yes i know chris barnes' voice has gone to shit recently but give him a break. he's still a good writer of lyrics i enjoyed torment in spite of all the hate it got. overall six feet under is good in my opinion. not perfect but no band is perfect. every band has filler tracks and forgettable material. it's impossible to be 100% all the time in music. just think of six feet under like black licorice; most people think it's gross but the few that can stomach it are awesome and understand the value of an acquired taste. every now and then i like to listen to sfu and every now and then i think maybe i'll eat some black licorice cause don't care if everybody hates it but me. i'm still gonna enjoy what i want and hopefully others will too.

david girard exactly. For me after Terry Butler left it's been kind of rough. People forget that guy played in Massacre a legend in the Death metal world. Where Chris shines is with solid groovy riffs. For example his 13 album just rips. Also when he sang for the band Torture killer? That was amazing! But at the moment his music is kind of forgettable and I wish he didn't bark his vocals so much. But the constant hate this band gets just makes me stand up for them even more because there is much worse out there.

Thanks for all the comments. Now, to the reviewer, I’m happy to read your comment and to clarify, this was not meant as hate towards you. Not at all, you’re a good reviewer. I guess I’m just a long-time fan, but also as a musician and as an avid listener I expected more from the review. Oh well, next time! Thanks for your work in sharing Cannibal Corpse and death metal to people interested in the music, and I’m looking forward to more reviews . Now, I just wanted you to understand that death metal is a serious thing for us fans and, although some people may laugh at us for the extreme things we like, we consider this music style an important art form and we would like everybody to appreciate this. Thanks! Chris

William Haward The Graveyard Classics albums are laughable (that does make them enjoyable for humor..) but their original work can be awesome. Generally mid to low tempo but groovey. Though on their last album they got members of Brain Drill so a few songs absolutly rip! Check out the second album from SFU tribute band Torture Killer: Swarm. Chris does vocals on it... its sick.

I think this is one of their most refreshing albums, it sounds a little bit new and old school; way to got with the production. Listen to it, you can hear some death's leprosy riff-influenced. Since gore obsessed, this sounds different, skeletal domain and this new release are on pair for me. I'm gonna subscribe.

Damn, simple but profound point to make with the comparison to AC/DC and Motorhead and such, never thought about it like that. I will say this album has a muddy sludge to the rhythm that I've been missing a lot from their work, another win in a long list of wins from CC :) side note: Alex Webster is one of the nicest dudes ever,

I love Prog Metal the most followed by Post-metal and Black. I love Opeth, Enslaved and Tool and Mastodon and Devin Townsend... And I love more primitive stuff as well. Gonna disagree with you on Immolation, they evolved a lot lol. I love simple as much as complex, just needs to be good :D Im hyped for Converge coming out today, Brad better review that! Gonna check out CC as well for sure

7:56 -> I'm both. hahahahahhaha Love bands that stick true to themselves (like slayer and cannibal), but I also love bands that change their sound (like sepultura and opeth)... both are important for metal. And both are good as fuck. sorry for the crappy english.

I know Cannibal Corpse's music consists mostly of fast-paced, chaotic, "meat and potatoes" death metal stuff, but I fucking love their slow and brooding songs like Code of the Slashers and Remaimed... would've liked to hear more songs like that, but imo this album is great either way.

I doubt it! They've skipped a ton of great albums this year, and Converge doesn't seem "Metal" enough for them. I mean, they often trash metalcore, and/or seem completely unphased by it's existence.

I think the first two records with Allen West on guitars are great, but everything they put out in the 2000's is completely forgettable and at times fucking awful (Bringer of Blood, all Graveyard Classics albums). Undead and especially Unborn are pretty badass though.
