Appreciate your tip on testing the seal. Better than just pressing down on the lid to test.

I was just reading about how people would can food during the Great depression and it got me wondering as to how people knew if the food was sealed properly. I've heard that sickness could occur, botulism or whatnot, If the cans were sealed improperly. Very interesting, thanks for the video.

I just canned strawberry jam with a water bath. My lids are tight, flat and make no sound. Even if they aren't inverted, are they still sealed properly?

Same with quarts? I always see people do this with pints but never quarts. My green bean quart jars are so heavy and this test stresses me out lol.

I took my rings off for a moment today , but put them back on. Thing is , it had only been 14 hours since canned. Will this be a problem with my tomatoes?

My jar sealed on one but button did not go down. Barely touched it and it went down. Crazy.

Im glad you made this video! I watched the banana pepper one as well.....question.... do you leave the rings off when you store them?

what happens if you find out after the 16 hours that the seal isn't working. Can you simply reseal without losing the contents?

The best thing to do is put them in the refrigerator and use them as quick as possible.

I just did pickles and some aren’t pinging. But when I pick them up like this they stay sealed. Are they ok then? Also I did a hot kettle method (hot jars, hot brine & sealed). If they don’t seal can one water bath still to preserve since they were never water bathed.

You can have a silent seal that doesn't ping but still seals. Is the popper in the middle of the lid down? I always water bath can.

I've seen Angela do this with quart jars and pint jars. Not sure if she's ever tried it with anything larger than a quart jar

New to canning here. So, my ball jar lids overhang on the jar. Are you saying this is safe as long as they are sealed? No one can answer this and I'm skeptical about using these lids. These are new ball lids..just curious. Thank you

There is going to be a little overhang so that you can put something there to pop the lid off. What matters is that the red sealing compound is touching the rim of the jar. If that is true and it has passed the seal test, then it is safe. It seems to me that Ball is getting more and more overhang. This is just another reason that I prefer ForJars.

How does canning work? Like what is the exact science to those seals keeping put?

When you place the jars in the water bath canner you see bubbles come up because all the of air is releasing from the jars. If it is a pressure canner, when you see steam going out the valve that is the air releasing from the jars. When you pull them our of the canner it causes pressure to start building in the jars and when that pressure reaches a certain level it causes the sealing devise in the lids to seal. If you have a truly airtight seal it will hold until you pop the seal. Hope this answers your question.

At 16 hours my ground beef have not sealed. At this point, why should I wait another couple hours when this meat would be spoiled anyway?

Oh wow, still had not sealed after 16 hours? Usually not sealing is a problem with the lids especially after being pressure canned. What brand were the lids?

@@artofcreationhomestead I think I know what I did wrong. I listened to a friend, and he did not know everything like he thinks he does. I believe that they did not process because I had the stove turned down to low. Out of fear I threw all of the meat away, I found out later I could’ve kept it 😡
