When your brakes don't work, feel spongy or weak, they most likely need some bleeding. The newer type of Shimano brakes require a funnel for that, but the old type hydraulic brakes don't require any special tools.

One piece of advice, when removing the pipe from the callipers put your finger over one end to form a seal and then remove the pipe. This will then ensure that no oil leaks out (like it did on the rear brake). Once free of the calliper move the pipe into your collection container and remove your finger, the oil will then flow into the container - zero mess...

Clear precise presentation. & no clickbait. Great too see that no special tools were used unlike a number of other videos. Thanks.

I did mine yesterday with a syringe from the caliper up to the reservoir and that worked perfect and no spills

Thank you sir. I'm about to do this on my old felt q720 and didn't know where to begin because all the how tos only show the new ones with the funnel cup. Looks so easy I think I can do it .

Followed your instructions, and it was remarkably straightforward! Nothing to be nervous about at all. The only issue is trying not to make a mess 🤣

Reminds me of the mid 90's bleeding the first discbrakes. This was always a mess to fill up the reservoir befor closing it. All the the oil on the ground. 🙈

TIP : If your brake still feel spongy/ then look into brake presses on rides there is small 2mm alan screw thingy in middle and you can adjust level of press :)

Excellent vid. I have struggled to find one that covered the brakes on my 1st Gen Specialized Carve 29er. This walkthrough was epic. Though I didn’t remove my wheels and pads - so have to order new pads as you were right. I got oil on them and they dont grip anymore!

That could be the same reason for my weak brakes , so put on the old pads again.if that doesn't help,I don't know what to do.

@@joshis1913 dont because you will contaminate them . First burn the discbrakes with a small flamethrower and than burn the pads and you are good to go!🚴‍♂️

Great video. Mine has not that type of bleeding niple on the calipers. I cannot stabilize the hose because the bleeding niple is in a cylinder shaped groove. Any advise please?

Hi. I can't get the bleed screw off my shimano shifter. So if I open the caliper up at the bottom and try and press out the bubbles downwards like in the video, will this still work if I don't take the bleed screw off

Thanks for doing the video. I could not find many with the old style shimano Reservoir. I did both mine today but the rear is still too spongy despite all new fluid and do e with proper caliper blocks in. I think I will try using the syringe I have and do it the other way tomorrow to see if it gets some extra air out. Any other relevant suggestions welcome. Cheers.

Did it work better the other way? Seen videos bleeding in both directions. Imagine syringe pushing through from the calliper side is better.

i dont see why you cant do this with the brake levers that have the additional fill screw. as it looks like you can still remove the top. the funnel probably just makes it easier. (if you have one)

Why does everyone say if any oil gets on the pads they are destroyed? its far from realistic..

because oil is a lubricant and therfore make the brakes slip more then they should. It also makes them noisy. If you're fine with the performance of contaminated pads, thats one thing, but its bad advice to give ona tutorial
