Canoe, solo wild camping in the Scottish highlands [Inverpolly, Loch Sionascaig]

Күн бұрын

On this adventure me and Indiana set off in the canoe on a remote wild camp in the Scottish highlands.
Paddling across the beautfully scenic Loch Buine Moire, Loch Sionasgaig and endind up at Loch an Doire Dhuibh: having had to portage in between.
In camp (after a quick skinny dip) we Cook up our supper on the firebox stove and are treated to a wonderful sunset.
Route taken from the book 'Scottish Canoe Classics' by Eddie Palmer.

I live up there and I’ve owned springer spaniels all my life. Best place in the world to live and raise a family. All my kids have grown up and left home and they grew up the same way I did - learning to swim in the sea, wandering in the hills and playing outside until it gets dark…which it doesn’t really in the midsummer. Anyway, I enjoyed this video very much. Tourists don’t often make an effort to respect the land and will leave junk, start fires where they shouldn’t and leave gates open. They’ll let their dogs chase the sheep and it’s nice to see someone who takes care to enjoy our home without making a mess or being a nuisance. It’s getting busier every year up here and if everyone treated the wild, anywhere in the country, like this guy then there’d be no hassle about wild campers.

It's a beautiful area, I'm very envious. I've seen many times the aftermath left behind by disrespectful campers. Baffles me why people head to these beauty spots and ruin them. I always try to impact as little as I can and usually end up taking someone elses rubbish back. It's cumulative and even the smallest damage soon adds up and can quickly ruin an area. Hopefully anyone seeing my videos and heading to these areas will then treat them with the same respect. Anyway, thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Paul

Your story telling has helped to spark a fever for the water in me, the memory of which resides strictly in my genome. 52 years I have walked this Earth and without ever having owned a watercraft and yet this unfulfilled dream is about to become a reality, when this upcoming spring, a glorious, 14 ft. inflatable boat comes into my life. Joining me in my lake & river journeys (in the Inland Northwest of the U.S.) will be my young daughter, wife, and our two dogs. Unlike yours, my vessel will have a motor, but I am nonetheless confident we will find the peace & tranquility that you so beautifully capture in your video, albeit with a few less portages. I truly enjoyed the attention to the details and the videography. There is an obvious understanding between yourself and your dog and nature that I admire and wish to emulate. Thank you, as it also reaffirms my decision to invest the time & resources it will take to get us all out there.

brilliant mate. take extra care with your legs and feet when out alone. you need those bad boys more than you need food and drink. also just an observation. you could have left the tent at home and used the canoe as your shelter. buy yourself some mesh to throw over the canoe and use rocks to pin it out. or buy a Tarp and some para strings. it will make pitching up so much faster and simpler.. may as well utilize the canoe as a shelter.

Thank you, certainly wasn't the plan to fall down the hole, I was being so careful aswell 😂 I've used a tarp canoe combo before for camping a few times, including one I filmed on here, it is a great way to camp. To anyone who speaks Gaelic or who has bothered to find out about the place-names, watching these videos is painful. But it's well filmed and shows the landscape and route well. I like it. I'm sorry it pains you, but It's not fair to say I haven't bothered, it's really difficult to research how to pronounce many of these places, aswell as lots of confliction. @@WhenNaturePauls Aye the parking isn't very obvious. If you head out of Elphin towards the Ledmore junction, about 100 meters before the bridge over the Ledmore river there's a lay-by on the left with a wooden gate and a number of small fishing boats. I left my truck there for 3 days. Launch into the river then head into Cam Loch, portage over the falls and into Loch Veyatie by the old fish farm. Alternatively, there is a road from Elphin to the fish farm but the gate is now locked, it would be a relatively straight forward portage from there with a canoe trolley. Give it a miss on a windy day though, it's brutal! ATB, Ben.

@@WhenNaturePauls most non gaelic speakers have trouble, and those awful online translations are worse than useless, but if you can remember a few rules of grammar you'll get pretty close most of the time. For example, Si and Se make a Sh sound, and G is often a hard C, so Sionasgaig is pronounced Shonaskay. Any time Im out in the remote highlands, I let the local rescue services know where Im planning to go and when I plan to be back. Theyre the best source of local knowledge, and a big part of that is knowing how to pronounce where you are. good luck

Glad to hear it! My 15ft suits me perfectly, would be nice if it were a bit lighter, but its easy enough to handle solo, the size enables me to carry a decent load of kit and I can also paddle tandem with limited kit. A comparative 14ft will of course be lighter and be more agile but probably wont track as good, would struggle to paddle tandem and would,nt be capable of carrying as much kit.. I also wanted the prospector profile as its a good all rounder and is seldom found in 14ft boats. I guess I would recommend a 15ft as that's the conclusion I came to, however it does depend how you are going to use it. Hope that helps, be nice to know what you decide on, Paul

Hi, yes it's a awesome trip! Might be a bit of a struggle on your own, mine is around 32kg but is fairly comfortable to carry. I don't have a kneeling thwart, I find it more comfortable without one just on my knees. When I have the dog and sail, I usually do paddle from the stern it feels pretty well balanced. If I'm on my own, I'll sit on the front seat effectively going backwards and dropping to my knees when I need to, unless Im using the sail which is held in the front seat.
