Thanks Eze 👍 food went down a treat. The wind was a quite challenging at times. The tent is a zephros 2, wild country, had it for years. Its a great little tent for the money, Its quick and easy to erect, although I wouldnt want to test it on a summit in strong winds. The jellyfish was a definite highlight 😂 so happy we got it on camera. Cheers Eze, need to meet up soon

Hello, I just watched your video, your journey through these different lochs, fantastic. We plan to go canoeing in Scotland, in July/August, my partner and I and why not, repeat your journey, we are not canoeing professionals but we can sail up to class 2 without problem, remains the sea, do you advice to give us for approaching the sea with its currents and tides. Thank you for your response and congratulations again for what you do. thomas

Hello, glad you're enjoying my videos. I'm no professional either. This was my second attempt at the circuit, I failed to get round the coast last time due to less than ideal conditions, I wouldn't attempt it unless it was good conditions. We paddled the north channel of the Shona islands against the incoming tide and wind, it was a good workout 😅 and just doable for me solo. At low tide the north channel becomes blocked by sand banks on the east side. At high tide the rapid at the bottom of the river sheil will be washed out if you don't want to run it, but it is also easily portage. All the best, Paul

Copied from comment I made on previous video Great video ,did this trip 35 years ago with two friends in sea kayaks ,had a bit of bother from the land owners regards fishing rights against right of way on the river for boats ,they threatened police action which we welcomed as we were affirming the rights of way ,of course nothing happened, well I digress trip was great and we completed the route ,I admire your attempt in Canadian canoes ,it can be rough along the knoydart coast , maybe I will give it ago lol

Would love to canoe Scotland 35 years ago, I can imagine it would be a bit quieter, not that this one was busy. A sea kayak would definitely increase the chances of getting round the headland. Id like to own a nice sea kayak, there is so much to explore on the coast. Thanks for watching, Paul

Hello Paul, my 8 Yr old daughter and I have enjoyed this video. Inspired by your adventures on Loch Shiel, we got a tandem inflatable kayak and last year around 9 or ten miles down from Glenfinnan, we camped at a beach and paddled out to a little island called the Black Rocks, a very historic spot. This year we have just returned from a paddle to the Green Isle, where we camped and had a wonderful time. We think it's time we got a proper canoe. Is your silverbirch suitable for starters or could you suggest something else? Looking forward to your next video. Next year we want to try your 'epic beach'. Best wishes.
@WhenNaturePauls
@WhenNaturePauls 2 ай бұрын
Excellent stuff! It's such a beautiful area and chuffed I inspired you. The broadband is a great canoe and a good all rounder. Mines a 15ft, but if you're always going tandem I would go for a 16ft, you can paddle the 15ft tandem but once you start adding camping equipment, you'll appreciate the extra load capacity. If you're only paddling flat water you could go for a canoe with less rocker and maybe something a little lighter, it really depends on your usage. Norfolk may be miles away for you, but the boat house at Attenborough (silver birch HQ) used to rent you a canoe and if you bought one refund the money, if you want to give one ago. The beach was epic! There is another epic one just round the corner as well.

Thank you Paul. We are in North Kent and Attleborough is 2 hrs from us so I've emailed SB. Exciting! Today we watched your first Loch Shiel circuit video and realised that at the end of Day one, you camped at the same beach that we did last year, just opposite the Black rocks. My daughter keeps saying she hopes we'll find you on our next expedition! Lastly, have you any tips for estimating how far you can paddle in a day? We've learned the wind makes a huge difference, but is 10 miles alot and perhaps planning for 5 more realistic to start with. I guess it comes with experience. Best wishes from Anne ( 8yrs) and Martin (dad)
@WhenNaturePauls
@WhenNaturePauls 2 ай бұрын
@@crusadersports1 little trip on the broads maybe. Yes a super beautiful spot and it came at a good time for us. As you said it really depends on the weather conditions. 10 miles is definitely achievable and could easily do a lot more downstream on a river or with the wind behind you, but other times it can be a slog. Best to stay flexible and have a few options. I've not been able to get out in the canoe much lately due to multiple reasons keeping me super busy, but hopefully I'll be out again soon and who knows we may cross paths.

Hi, Great vid. I've had this marked as a possible route for a little while. I'm interested where you parked and how you got to and from vehicles. I was looking at the train from Glenfinnan to Lochailort and trying to park near one of those stations.
@WhenNaturePauls
@WhenNaturePauls Жыл бұрын
Hello, Overnight parking in Glenfinnan is non-existent. I park at Glenfinnan house hotel, you have to contact them and fill out a form, they do charge a small fee, but they are right next to the jeti and very convenient. On this trip we had another group member leave a car near lochailort, I'm not sure where, possibly right at our egress point. Thanks for watching, glad you liked it and happy to help, Paul

Well done, what an epic! The scenery there is just amazing. I actually hiked to a bothy on the Ardnish peninsula a few years ago, thats just slightly north/west of where you finished up on this adventure. A few other guys rocked up there on canoes while I was there. Incidentally- with the open sea stretches in mind, do you carry a VHF radio? I know it’s mainly powerboaters who do mainly though to be fair.

It such a beautiful area, the beaches are some of the best I've seen. I didn't carry a VHF radio, wouldn't of been a bad idea but I wouldn't of attempted if the weather was poor and we hugged the coast line pretty close. I do take a spot device with me so can send out an SOS if I really need to. Thank you for watching, Paul

Hi Paul, We are loving your videos, just asking for a bit of advice, looking to buy an open canoe to do adventures on lochs rivers and canals, could you possibly give us some advise, I've been looking at getting an old town penobscot 174, but our local canoe shop says there not available, I've seen a nova craft prospector 17-sp3 at there store, just asking would you go for the 17 or is the nova prospector 16-sp3 just as good for what we want? Only asking because my partner has MS and struggles to use one arm so maybe not able to help to load it onto our renault trafic van to much, she is keen to do day trip's and loves the thought of me padding ( which I'm fine with me ) while she enjoys the view's, would only be taking enough kit to stop off somewhere, get the stove out make a little food and have a brew, would love a bit of advice as she's keen to experience the adventure, many thanks for any help, Mark
@WhenNaturePauls
@WhenNaturePauls 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark thanks for watching and sorry for late reply. Both of those are quite heavy canoes to carry on your own and unless you are carrying a fair bit of kit a 16 should be adequate for two. I've never paddled the the 174 but it is probably more suited for flat water, the sp3 is a bit more of an allrounder with its prospector design and will be much more capable on any moving water. Obviously I paddle a silverbirch broadland 15, it would be worth checking out the 16, although a bit more expensive it is a fair bit lighter; I really like mine. Hope that helps, There is a lot of factors to consider and probably always a bit of a compromise. All the best paul
