Hi Grant, Thanks for another useful video. It's very clear and informative. There is so much one can do with the custom menus in setting up a camera for one's own personal preference, and it can be a minefield to understand what is useful and why. Therefore being able to get your view on how you set your camera for your wildlife photography is a very useful insight. That tip on setting up the multi controller button and the smaller button below it to instantly control access to focusing points and groupings is very valuable. Great images at the start of the video too! Look forward to more of these great videos. Dave

Great information - I normally use servo with back-button focus. This allows me to "focus and recompose" by focusing, then letting go of the BBF button. I thought that there was no other way to have servo & bbf co-exist, but I hadn't considered the AF-off possibility. I'll try it.

Thank you for the tip about the custom controls where you can switch between one shot and servo mode. It might be worth mentioning that you have to press the info button in that specific menu to make the camera keep the setting once you let go of the * button. I tried this out and was wondering why it always switched back when I let go of the button.
@grantatkinson8108
@grantatkinson8108 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sebastian, once I chose that "Ai Servo-One Shot" option from the Custom Controls menu, for the Star button, I pressed Set to confirm my choice. After that I only need to press the Star * button once, for it to change to Ai Servo or One Shot, for good - no other button presses needed. Is your camera different or am I misunderstanding your query? :-)
@notdisclosed9745
@notdisclosed9745 7 жыл бұрын
You can decide which behaviour you want. When you are assigning the one shot servo function to the * button, pressing info lets you choose between switching between them until the button is pressed again (toggle), or only switching while it is held in. Personally I prefer to toggle. Also, I never use the depth of field preview button for preview: you can customise this in the same way, which is what I do on my 5DIV, so that I still have * for exposure hold in the rare cases I want this. The great thing about toggling focus mode with the depth of field preview button is that you always have it under the third finger of the right hand, which I find even easier than using a button on the back of the camera. As to the new button on the back, I do not find it very useful for selecting the focus point layout, because it only cycles through the options in one direction: to change the focus point pattern, I prefer to use the back button on the right and use the wheel to move the layout in whichever direction I want immediately. Personally I use the new button for exposure compensation, to make it very quick to add exposure compensation when shooting in manual mode with auto ISO (which is my generally preferred way of shooting wildlife). Each to their own, and I certainly do not meant to criticise Grant's choices just because they are not quite the same as mine. Look forward to the remaining videos in the series.

Thank you Grant for all the great tips and advise. Thank You also Sebastion, I ran across the same problem. You are correct, allow me to elaborate. You do have to press "info" which will take you to the next screen. From that screen you have 2 selections to choose from. The first is an arrow with a line underneath that states "switch only when btn is held." The second is "Hold" and it states "switch each time btn is pressed." It is here where you select the action you want . It is self explanatory. In option one when you depress the button, it will select the other setting. Once you let go of the button it will return to the original setting. In option two you have to depress the button to select the other setting. That selection will remain until you depress the button once again. It is from this screen that you select "OK."

Hello Grant, first off, thanks a lot for your videos, they are easy to follow and helpful. When I customized the star button to switch between one shot and AI servo I realize that I have to keep it pressed to do so, unlike your camera where you seem to press once and changes back and forth. Any idea why this could be happening? Thanks a lot
@grantatkinson8108
@grantatkinson8108 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Eduardo, so when you have the Custom Controls menu starting point, and you have gone into the position on the graphic that is represents the Star button, when you have the box highlighted that says ONE SHOT -SERVO , you need to press the INFO button on the top left back of the camera and it will take you to another option screen where you can make the switch permanent HOLD or have it only active whilst you press the button. Choosing HOLD will make it permanent. I ought to have included that in the video..sorry about that, hope you get it figured out now.

Just bought a 5DM4 and couldn't be happier with my first shoot today. Your videos are highly informative and helpful for me to learn this beast. Question: I find using the touchscreen is way faster for navigating the menus than scrolling. Any reason you don't use touch screen in your videos? Is it just to not obscure the screen from the viewer? Thanks.
@grantatkinson8108
@grantatkinson8108 6 жыл бұрын
The touchscreen can be the quickest way to navigate but as you point out, it is hard to use it without blocking the video capture...no other reason...and I kind of feel that so long as someone has a clear idea of what a setting does, how you get there is up to the user. On the 5Dmk4 there are usually multiple ways to change settings :-)

I've just upgraded from my Canon EOS 70D to the 5D Mk4. I've spent 2 days looking for good KZfaq AF tutorials and yours is best - at last, something logically set out, comprehensive and clear - thanks so much!!! One thing: On my Autofocus Menu 4, inside the "Select AF area selec. mode" option, the second choice single spot focus has lost its surrounding box and I can therefore neither tick it or untick it. Thus on the AF Menu 4 page, on the line "Select AF area selec. mode", I see just a hyphen mark, not a tick (or whatever should be there ...). How do I reactivate that box?
@grantatkinson8108
@grantatkinson8108 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremy, glad the video is useful. With regard to your choice of AF mode options, I think that if i got you correctly, you are referring to the second choice which is Single Pt AF. You can not check it or uncheck it because it is the default option...so you always have to include it in your list of choices. That works for me because i like using it..but may be different for you, but it remains a constant option :-)
@jeremyturner76745
@jeremyturner76745 7 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks, understood. But on another video, I saw that on the line "Select AF area selec. mode", there was a tick (or maybe "YES", I can't remember) but I have just a hyphen mark. Maybe it doesn't matter, though seems odd?
@jeremyturner76745

And I should add: yes, I use the Single Pt AF, and also that I haven't lost it as one of the AF options. But why the hyphen?

Hi Jeremy, if you have all six options checked, then there is a hyphen showing on the AF4 screen, opposite "Select AF Area Selec. Mode" Just as soon as you uncheck one or more of the AF modes then the hyphen changes to a 'Checkmark", i guess to indicate from the AF4 menu that you have made changes to that menu...

I'm still in the dark over how to toggle the AF beep on and off (shutter pressed half way, AF focuses and I get a feedback "beep"). Where is that option on the Canon 5D Mark4? I just got two bodies here and I'm trying to figure it all out. This had me stumbled. I also want to say that I appreciate very much your videos and I find them very informative. Thank you for that! I have subscribed.

The 'beep' is only a confirmation that sounds when you are shooting in One Shot Focus Mode, usually for static subjects or for 'focus and recompose' technique. When the camera is in Ai Servo, usually best for moving subjects, the beep does not sound....

Hi Grant - I'm so pleased to have found your videos. I've just upgraded from 5D3 to 5D4 and these videos would have made the decision a lot easier! Your presentations are superbly clear and understandable and now I have a good understanding of the AF system and how to best set it up, particularly single button presses rather than the default button+wheel. I also use shutter button focus, and like you I am left eye dominant so it's useful to see that all those buttons are still usable with your left eye to the camera (and nose over the screen). As I also have an 80D many of the same considerations apply. A question about your Gimpro gimbal - when do you use it in full gimbal, or in sidekick mode?
