Yep. The 5D is essentially a 90's era Canon SLR body with a digital sensor slapped onto the back. And that's just fine.

The 5D is really in a league of it's own. Every time I take this out, I end up loving almost every shot. I do nearly nothing from the RAW but crop and maybe at most an exposure tweak. The colors are fantastic.

My first full frame camera was a second hand Sony a7 MK1 and it's a fine camera except for the battery use. 3 shots per 1% of battery use!!! I just bought a second hand Canon 5D MK1 and it's fantastic. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of an up to date DSLR, and that's fine by me. The colours from the Canon seem to have a VERY subtle golden hue to them. It just takes lovely looking photo's!! It won't win any speed races, but it does take me back to the basics of photography, less is more.

@@87solarsky Basically 95% of Earth, lol. Maybe a business will need a big print or someone might wanna run a slideshow on their 4k TV once in a while, but for most people, 12mp is fine. If you really need more, just super res or gigapixel it. Or if the subject allows, just stack four or five images. Boom, 48-60mp. Don't wanna stack, then pick up a nodal rail. Many options.
@diegodivers
@diegodivers Жыл бұрын
@@MyChevySonic 4k in 16:9 is normally just around 8mp, (8,3) 5k just under 15mp (14.7) and for 8k you finally need a high resolution of 33.2. But if you want to shoot or do a crop to 16:9 that fits your screen the long side is your scale. In 4k this is normally 3880pixels, so the minimal sensor size on 3:2 ratio is just a little over 10mp (3880x2587).

My first foray into full-frame was buying a used 5D a few years ago. Liked it so much I picked up a 5D Mk II later on. I still use these two cameras for certain personal projects. Both can deliver beautiful output. The only downside is weight; for long photowalks I'll opt for my GR III. These old Canon DSLRs are a steal on the used market.

The 5D had a version of MagicLantern for it that gave new capabilities. To Robin: I love the Nikon DSLR cameras. I have several of them, including a D600 like Robin (with the shutter upgrade). The only way I will ever be separated from my beloved Nikon DSLR cameras is when someone pries them from my cold, dead fingers. The Canon 5D series is equally marvelous. I only have the 5DS today, but it is a real joy for me to use. For years, my favorite camera was my 5D Mark II but I eventually gave that one away. Old habits die hard. How could I live without that satisfying DSLR shutter click? ;-)

The jpegs are what makes this camera unique - shooting RAW does in fact give you Canons standard color profile but that could be had on any Rebel or other Canon camera of its time. The JPGs were made with a collaboration with Kodak for a Kodachrome look. The huge pixel pitch is what makes it good even in RAW makes it one of the best skin rendering, buttery smooth.

A tip for those who want to buy a used 5D Classic: the first ones they produced used to have a weak pentaprism mirror mount, and after a few thousand shots, one of the mirrors would come off (the one you see when you remove the lens). Canon then started a recall campaign to reinforce the mirror. Just make sure the mirror is reinforced when you search for a second hand 5D; you can do it by removing the lens and checking if the mirror you see has two thin metal strips on the shorter sides (and btw if it might be helpful to anybody living in Europe: I'm currently selling on eBay my perfectly working 5D classic - one of the last few which were made with a reinforced mirror straight from the factory - because I need to reduce my belongings before moving to a new apartment and just keep my minimalist m43 setup. I know that it can still make somebody else really happy for the years to come. They're so simple, absolutely built like tanks, and trust me: the analog look this camera has is a real thing, it's just magic)

Your photo walks through Kuala Lumpur have been an inspiration. It seems that people there are very generous in letting you photograph them, with wonderful results. It really wasn’t too long ago that mirrorless cameras were the object of scorn by SLR owners. For me, the real turning point was when the EVF on the LUMIX G9 was given enough resolution and a fast refresh rate to yield both realistic realtime views, plus the other benefits you mention, that it was clear to me that SLRs were a dead end. Although late to the game, my current Canon mirrorless caught up, and even surpassed that. One thing you didn’t mention was the lack of IS in SLRs: I can’t imagine going back to those days!

I was a Canon 20D user (which is almost exactly the same as the 5D - same menu, exact same buttons layout, the main difference is the crop sensor). After it died, I got an M50 mark II mirrorless which I absolutely love for super fast and reliable auto focus and its incredible compactness (especially with the EF-M 22mm pancake lens - not bigger than a smallish PSP camera, easily fits in a coat pocket!) Yet, I miss the natural look of the 20D. So, to replace, I got a 5D - went for the full frame, which always have been a dream, but was $$ in the past... and now the 5D classic is so affordable. I got a used one from Japan, it arrived last week. It is absolutely pristine, I though I was unwrapping a brand new unused camera manufactured in the last few months! Not bad for an 18 year old model. Sadly, could not start shooting as it still has the old firmware that accepts max 4GB CF cards, and my smallest CF card is 16GB... and the way to update the firmware is to download it to the CF card... So here I am, the 4GB CF card arriving tomorrow, and then it is back to the future! Will be using vintage manual lenses with it. (Takumar, Helios, Beroflex). Can't wait :))

In 2015 I sold my 5D MKII and all my lenses and switched to the Olympus OM-D E-M5 II. I had understood that the future was elsewhere and that from the financial point of view it was necessary to sell. The number of people who are interested in photography (really) is not huge, smartphones are enough for young people, with an App to sublimate (faking) their photos, tomorrow with AI they will make their photos without cameras. I guess all those great cameras will eventually die in some kind of big elephant graveyard.

I think you dwell too much on the fact that with an optical viewfinder, what you see isn't necessarily what you get. I have both a Fuji system and a Canon system (5D mk 4). And when I'm shooting with my Canon full frame I'm not even thinking what I see isn't what I get as a quick glance at the picture on the back reveals whether I nailed it or not (usually not...lol). Come on, we're both old farts, I'm sure you shot with film cameras and back in the day you often didn't find out for a week whether you nailed the shot or not (for newbies - the film had to be developed).
