Are Canon back to their best? This is a deep dive into the Canon C70, an amazing cinema camera that gives a user pretty much all the features they could want from an indie workhorse, especially after a slew of recent firmware updates.
In this episode i'll take you through some of the cameras most important setting, and give you all the tools you'll need to get up and running, and getting the best from the camera.
Make sure to check out part 2, which takes you through the cameras menus, and provides an overview of the settings I regularly choose.

Great deep dive into the Canon C70. I took a supposed masterclass on this cinema camera last summer but it left me with so many unanswered questions. I spent the next six months simply setting up test scenes to learn how to best use the camera. Not a bad way to go, mind you, but very time consuming. Then, I stumbled upon your two part tutorial for the C70. Filled in nearly all the blanks I still had, including the ideal ISO setting to use. All I ever read was 800, but as you explained it depends on the profile you're shooting in. So, many thanks, Ian!!!

Lot of terrific information for a brand new C70 owner - thanks. I still prefer shutter speed over shutter angle because it's easier for me to understand being a still photographer turned cinematographer. I came from a C100 M2 so right now I'm shooting WideDR, but I want to use Clog2 more - the Clog1 in the C100 was really a pain to grade and I lost interest in it. Now shooting 422 10bit it's a whole new world!

Great video. I want the C70 mii to have a 6k sensor, a boxier design, full size XLR ports and it would be perfect to me.

Mini XLR’s don’t particularly bother me, the mini versions seem to work fine on all the C70’s and Blackmagic cameras I’ve used, and the sound I’ve gotten from the C70 with a Sen 416 mic has been really good ☺️ Personally I’d like to see open gate recording in either in 4K or 6K, and I’d prefer a redesigned hinge for the lcd screen. The screen is excellent in terms of clarity and adjustability, but the hinge just feels a little loose and flimsy. I’d prefer the mounting option to be more like the C300iii

You need to send the camera in for repair to fix that hinge. I've been fighting Canon and plan on filing a class action to make them redesign it., I've already threatened Discovery. You should definitely get that hinge looked at though.

Great Video! When you talk about exposure and false color, what do you mean with white point?
@ianthurstan
@ianthurstan 6 ай бұрын
The white point refers to where a white piece of card should be exposed at. White is normally one of the brightest parts of an image. Objects brighter than white are normally some kind of speculative highlight such as a window reflections/the sun/reflections off metallic objects. If your white point is correctly exposed it means you have less chance of blowing out highlights ☺️

hi thanks for the great video. I was wondering if you could help me with this. I recorded footage the other day on mp4 file format but had previously recorded XAVC format. When I try to view the clips on my pc from the SD card only the XAVC clips show but when I go to media on the camera all clips show including both formats. How do I get access to the mp4 files on the SD card (i.e. (copy them to my pc) to work on. Thanks

The greatest video tutorial I´ve ever seen, better than payd tutorials. After having watched that I figured out how many things I was doing wrong. Thank you so much, Ian! Just one question that bothers me since I have the C70. Mostly use BT.709 WDR profile. My images for some reason tend to be magentish. What can I do to solve the problem? Thanks and good luck in you so sifeul and well done work!

You may need to go into your kelvin temperature settings and adjust the Green/Magenta tint; you may have accidentally adjusted it and not realised, or you could use a grey card and perform a manual white balance. this should you give you an accurate kelvin range :) hope this helps

Hi Ian, how do you set the slow shutter below 1/15 sec? I choose "slow" in "shutter mode" but I can't go below 1/15. I can only increase to 1/30.

Great stuff. If I shoot in the new Canon 709 codec, and I do, is that base 400 like WDR codec? Or 800 base? Thanks? I just subbed. This is so complete and amazing info bud.
@ianthurstan
@ianthurstan 11 ай бұрын
I would assume it’s either 400 or 160, as I think a standard 709 is 160, but with the new Canon 709 having a similar dynamic range as WideDR it could be 400, id have to look into it to be 100% sure ☺️

@@ianthurstan Odd. I've watched many videos that were all things C70 and didn't even know to change the base ISO. I was under the impression it was 800/3200. There have been times 400 ISO would have been easier to shoot with outside. Thanks!

Hi great video can you tell me what handle & nato rail do you have fitted to the C70 ?
@ianthurstan
@ianthurstan 8 ай бұрын
Hiya, it’s just a simple small rig handle and small rig cheese plate with an additional base plate,(came as one package) no NATO rail on it, just a 3/8ths screw with 2 locking pins at the side of the main screw, it’s small rig number 3190 and is about £130. There are bigger and more fully kitted out options now but we got these when the first C70 was first released. As it’s low profile and designed for portability, I ’d prob upgrade to a nato rail system at this point as there are lots of options now ☺️

Question: The Focus Guide 2nd Frame is greyed out on my Canon C70. Does anyone know why that is?

I wish I could limit file size somehow without recording stopping like gopros do. Why? Because dropbox limits to 50GB files for uploading through website and also to reduce corruption risk of losing all of a bigger file. Such as by static, SEU, etc. Does anyone know if limiting file size is possible other than cutting often.

what is the difference in 90 or 270 with osd orientation lcd? when do you choose to use 90 ? when do you choose to use the 270? thanks
@ianthurstan
@ianthurstan 6 ай бұрын
I think it’s referring to which way you turn the camera on its side, i.e is the grip handle facing up to the sky or facing down to the floor. 90 and 270 both turn the lcd information vertical just in the opposite direction

If c70 had open gate and 6k it would be a desirable camera. By the way there is no such thing like correct motion blur. Me personally cant stand the smeary image the shutter rule gives.

IRE values are a thing of the past. The Ed Lachlan zone system is a more accurate system of exposure derived from the analog world and more adapted to the digital world. Also, the C70 sensor is one of the rare sensors that lets you expose for the shadows ( old school way ;-) Leave ETTR to the Sony fan club guys 🫢
@ianthurstan
@ianthurstan Жыл бұрын
I personally prefer false colour over most things (simple because individual IRE values are a pain to remember lol), or Gio scopes on a RED camera , and yeah modern sensors don’t need lots of overexposure in log profiles, even the newer Sony ones like the fx6 and 9 don’t really need it, but I still know lots of people that prefer to add an extra half stop/stop, and a lot of people who still shoot on the last gen sensors and then feel comfortable with that method and carry it over to newer sensors ☺️ I agree that it was critical for older Sony cameras to ETTR lol, I mainly mentioned it in the video because I think it’s important to gain an understanding of why stuff like IRE levels were once valuable in the leaning process ☺️, when I first started out it helped my understand log profiles much more easily ☺️ I personally also still love using external light meters and spot metering, which is how I shoot with my medium format photography cameras (I think that’s why I find false colour so useful), since it’s essentially just a newer variation on the analogue spot meters, but provides the individual readings all at once across the different colours ☺️ I’ve not used the Ed Lachman system so I’ll look into it, thanks for the recommendation 👍

I looked into the Ed Lachlan zone thing, but couldn't really see any advantage to it unless you were already used to working in stops and wanted to transfer that learning over to digital. I don't see how measuring in stops or IRE is going to be more or less 'accurate' so long as you are using those measurements wisely.
@jmbaillard7015
@jmbaillard7015 11 ай бұрын
More precise in the highlights ( speculate). Advantages are: 1/ Standardization 2/ DoPs have more control on where and how they want to expose ( no DITs or other colorists intervention) 3/ If you need to come back and re-shoot, the conditions will be identical…) Did you listen to the whole interview I posted? Those guys are seasoned DoPs, if Ed Lachman patterned his system that’s because he knows he’s gonna make money out of it. Reason is: when professionals realize how interesting and worth that system is, they will pay to have it implemented in their cameras. If you’re happy with the FC stay with them.
