So what are your thoughts on the DM-E1D? Is it worth it for your rig? Tell me below.

I'm just looking at buying an R3 and noticed this listed as an accessory, so this review was good timing for me, thanks!. Very interesting and unbiased review, thanks! The quality doesn't seem to be there for that price. We are still waiting for Canon to open up the RF to third party lenses and my guess is we'll wait a long time for them to open up the new hot shoe too, so it's basically this mic or a cabled one for the foreseeable.

Glad I could help! It IS a good mic if you know what you're doing in post production EQ. I was a little harsh on it because I know that not all photographers / videographers are audio engineer experts who understand which frequencies to tweak in post to get things to sound great. I made the comparison of editing a RAW file so non-audio engineer photographers / videographers knew what things would be like in post for them. I do hope they come out with more microphones in the future that utilize this technology. It is cool stuff. Thanks for the watch!

@@KevinDeal thanks! I am not an audio expert by any stretch, I don't mind fiddling with an equaliser to make things sound how I like, but that's about as far as I go 😂 I guess they must have a line of accessories in R&D designed to go on this new mount, you would certainly hope so anyway, otherwise it seems a lot to invest for just one mic and one remote flash dongle.
@KevinDeal2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnScarrott definitely. I wish they would also sell and accessory, a bridge with a cable that I can use to float the mic out for briefcase style shots. A smart cable that still sends all the info the contacts need. The amount of EQing the mic needs isn't crazy, but you do need to know where to boost and cut.

Thanks for this review. It is annoying that Canon can't get this right. Thid would have been good at the size and price of the mke200. It is late to the party vs Sony with a multi function hotshoe. So far it has yet to release anything good for it. As a complete novice videographer I would like to buy a good plug and play mic, and I'd also buy a tiny flash that works without batteries, as I often want fill flash but don't want the weight of even my smallest flashes.

Yes. The new hot show has potential but so far everything that is made for it has been a letdown. I hope to see Canon take this more seriously since they are putting it in all their new cameras.

My big product-wish from Canon would be an external monitor which is powered & connected through the shoe. They could offer 5 or 7 inch which interfaces with the camera for touch focus 🔥🔥🔥

Ugh, are there any new options available for wireless mics these days
@KevinDeal6 күн бұрын
Despite the fact that they have had this new hot shoe for over two years, the accessories for it have been slow to be released. Not a whole lot of accessories out there. I just use the Rode Go II.

Canon needs to follow Sony in this regard. Sony is coming out with all kinds of cool mics.

I'm surprised Canon didn't put an analog option for this mic which leaves a ton of R5/R6/R/RP owners out. I have the Sony hot-shoe mic equivalent (ECM-B1M) which has digital & analog option so I can also use it on Sony cameras without the new digital hot-shoe connection and not need to use the 3.5mm jack. The Sony mic sounds more full "straight off the mic" compared to your Canon mic. I also prefer the physical buttons on the Sony instead of Canon's single menu shortcut. Lastly, the 360 omnidirectional option on the Sony is more useful to me as I like to do family video commentary behind the camera instead of selfie vlogs versus the 120 degree maximum on the Canon.

Yeah. For $300, I think canon could have done better.

I think it's better to test mics when there aren't airplanes or semis in the background.
@KevinDeal6 ай бұрын
It’s a field mic. Sensitivity is something you would test as well. I personally would want to know how my microphone picks up background noise.
@myblacklab76 ай бұрын
@@KevinDeal I agree that that could be one of the tests. I suspect that in most use cases, people will shoot video in places that are not extremely loud. Those covering live events may sometimes not be able to avoid the noise nor use suitable microphones, but I don't think that is a typical use case. Also, your viewers have no way of knowing what those other noises are, nor how loud they are. If you were filming next to an air horn a few feet from a busy freeway, then the mic did a great job, but if those noises were more distant, it did an awful job. How are we to know how much background noise there is? We can't even see whatever is causing the noise. One thing that almost no one does when they test this stuff is test sounds everyone is familiar with under ordinary conditions. Apologies, if I am brusque. Most if not all of these review videos are trash, so if you made the first good ones, that would be awesome.

@@myblacklab7 the mic is garbage. I ended up returning it. It's such a terrible microphone that it really isn't worth the effort to try the tests you referenced. I truly cannot overstate how terrible of a microphone it is.
