As the great Dustin Abbott put it (if I remember correctly): "Real world useful" :D I have this since my M3 era and now I'm on the M5 with DPAF. Yes it's slow and dark on the tele end but can't argue with the compactness, low profile and utmost portability. Always keep it with me for inconspicuous street snapshots. As with any mirrorless system, what's more important than "a lens which you'd always bring along"? ;)

The EF-S version is pretty much better in every way except size and weight and it'll still work well on an EOS M. Canon is really neglecting the lenses despite releasing decent bodies which is the opposite of what they did when they released the original EOS M which came out with the excellent 11-22mm and 22mm f2 which feel more premium than some of their plastic L lenses...
@bodinian2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering that. I ordered the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM and right after learned about this. Your comment reassures me I made the right choice. The Sony a7 series and a9 are fantastic small, light and compact. However full frame cameras no matter how small they are, they demand heavy and big lenses. The APS-C cameras work with APS-C lenses which are considerably smaller and lighter. That is a huge advantage for APS-C cameras. The true is that best prime lenses are usually available in full format and that is an issue. Most lenses for APS-C cameras are zoom because they are convenient by the amateurs who mostly prefer APS-C mirrorless cameras. Canon has very few EF-M prime lenses. Its EF-M mount is very little supported by third manufacturers in comparison to the Sony APS-C e-mount mount. I believe that Canon isn't serious with its mirrorless cameras and EF-M lenses as Sony. My opinion is that Canon is just experimenting in case the mirrorless technology will overlap the dSLR technology.

To be honest that shouldnt happen as the EF-M and EF/EF-S autofocus programming is the same, its just an electrical passthough. The only thing that should make a difference is the quality of the adaptor and whether the flange distance is correct and the internal wiring is sound. Other brand lenses other than canon shouldnt be effected either as its just a poassthough.

Hi Christopher, as usual a good review! I'm always amused by how much gear you review that I either own or am thinking about buying. We Christophers must think a like! I do own this lens and only for one reason, it's built for the Canon M series and is fairly small and light. Yes, the aperture is on the dark side but if I want to travel light with my mirrorless system I take it along. And right now Canon has refurbished ones at a very good price. I own the EF-M adapter and sometimes use my Tamron 70-200mm G2 when weight isn't an issue and I really want to have better image quality but I've had pretty good success with this lens. Planning to get the new Tamron 18-400mm and that could be a game changer to make me sell this lens but for now I sill use it.

Hi Christopher, thanks for your review :) I own a M3 myself and a couple of EF-M lenses, including the 18-150. It’s perfect for traveling, but I missed the wider angels I had with my 15-45, so got a 11-20 as well. But some times I like to go on hikes and take pictures of birds (and other wildlife, if there is any :P), but the 150 doesn’t give me that much reach. I guess the 200 isn’t that much more ? I would love to get something like 300 or 400 with the adapter, but would rather not get something over 1 kg... Do you have any recommendations ?

Great channel, I found you last week after buying a EOS M5, so been watching all your video on lenses. Would you take this 55-200 native lens or the 55-250 IS STM EF-S lens? I have the EF to M adapter as my main rig is a Canon 5D2 and 50D so I have a few lens already. Physically how much bigger is the 55-250 over this native lens? Quality wise which one would you pick. My M5 come with the 15-45mm and I ordered a used 18-55 EF-M lens yesterday. Now I just need a nice zoom for it. I did use my 70-200 L on it and it performed wonderful but its not discrete and heavy. So from the two EF-S or the EF-M I would like to hear you recommendation.
@daveybphotography4 жыл бұрын
I have the same question except I have the M6mkii. I actually have both lenses you mentioned (oh and the 18-55 as well) and I'm trying to decide whether I should return the 55-200. The 55-250 ef-s seems to be about twice as big but in the grand scheme it's not a huge lens. It has an extra .5 aperture brightness and the equivalent of 80mm greater reach on the zoomed in end. I had the m lens 55-200 for a couple of weeks before I got the ef,-s 55-250 and I wasn't happy with the sharpness when reviewing my images but I'm new to this so it's hard to say if it's user error. I really like the extra reach of the 250 and I'm not seeing a lack of sharpness. The "pocketability" of the 200 is hard to beat and I may find that the 250 with lens hood is a bit indiscrete for say, street photography. I'm not considering sending the 250 back so if I could only have one, that would be my choice. Sorry for the ramble. Would love to hear what Christopher has to say now he has the higher res M6mkii.

My local store has a 55-250 used so Im checking that out tomorrow, they don't have the native zoom so Im not going to be able to compare. the used one is a great deal so if I like how it handles I may just get that at least its not going to be as heavy as my 70-200L then if I can borrow or see a killer deal on the native lens and get that latter. It is useless indoors too where there is not much light. And even on the canon 18-55mm stm at f4.5 you get far less vinyetting when you stop down from f3.5 to f4.5. Regardless though, good and honest review. Thanks and have a good day.

I agree. Saying it's pretty good is like saying a dinner at McDonald's is "pretty good." I had spent so many years buying cheap Canon stuff thinking it was "pretty good" and then got a he!! of a surprise when I bought my first Fuji mirrorless camera. No wonder people are flocking to Sony or Fuji for mirrorless.

I wouldn't say 'smooth' to the bokeh, the shape of the bokeh-balls and those onion rings in them are pretty ugly...

Would this work with a canon 4000D?
@christopherfrost3 жыл бұрын
No, as I said in the review, it's only for Canon's EOS M mirrorless cameras
