Canon EOS M6 Preview: Does It Replace The Canon EOS M5?

Let's jump right to it, the EOS M6 is not a replacement for the EOS M5. Canon has decided to follow a similar numbering scheme as they have done with their DSLR lineup. The lower the number the better the camera. For example, it goes from the 80D to 7D to 5D to 1D. Now the mirrorless cameras will try and follow the same theme.

In the video I say you're probably better of with the EOS M5 over the M6 because it has a viewfinder and I mean it. Sure the EOS M5 may be slightly smaller, but in my opinion I think it's important for people to use the viewfinder when shooting.

I purchased the m6 specifically because it didn't have the EVF. On sale the EVF was only $50, so it was a savings. My reason is sometimes when I want just a point and shoot, I have that without dragging lenses it the EVF. It just makes the camera more versatile and the flip up screen even more so. The EF to EF-M converter was also on sale for $50 so all my other Canon lenses should work just fine.

I'm thinking I like the M5 for 1) the EVF, 2) the flip DOWN screen - because in vlogs you can see the framing without appearing to look away from the lens. I was hesitant because of the interference with the tripod until I crafted a rectangular tripod mount that "frames" the flipped-down screen. That solved the problem. I should go into business making these !

I disagree. I think this is suddenly in a different class. As others have written, it's the vlogging version of the M5 And it ends up in the same price space as the Lumix LX10. So then the trade offs are, do you go with the LX10 with a fixed lens, no mic input but 4k or the M6, with probably better IS, removable lens, hotshoe and mic input. As much as I like 4k, the price and spec of the M6 are pretty enticing for vlogging.

No camera replaces any camera. All cameras have a time and place, whether it's for beginners, bloggers, travel enthusiasts, people on a budget, people who have no budget and also depends a lot of personal preference. I just recently swapped to Fuji from canon, for weight reasons. Fuji lenses are excellent, but they do not have the same range canon offer. A better title would be, Canon EOS M6, who's this for?

I got the M5. It is quite a step up from my G15. Still learning the ropes. If you can swing it, do get the M5. The viewfinder is really good. I got the kit lens, 15 to 45mm, because it is small and fits in the Lowepro DP 30 bag that I wear on a belt. The other kit lens is much bigger and will handle most of your everyday shooting. Of course the price is a couple hundred dollars more. I got the 22mmf2 lens on order, a very sharp prime lens. Later, will get the macro lens which is highly rated too.

I'd say they are targeting the vlogging market with the M6. Not being able to flip that screen up hurts the M5 for that purpose. And vloggers only use the screen, they tend to carry a different camera for everything else.

So...., what's wrong with connecting a mic to the bottom left or right...? They have bracket attachments that mean that you don't necessarily have to attach the mic to the top center........

There's a small mic that can fit on a $6 right-angle connector, right out of the mic jack. There's a video by yoda somebody here on YT showing how to do it... including a wind muff.

Canon is number two in mirrorless sales in Japan. 4K is not an issue to most people. Camera enthusiasts are not representative of normal users.

Who the hell are you to comment the intelligence of other. They are smart enough to make the cameras. An average ILC user buys 1.7 lenses for each body. Most people do not care of huge selection of lenses. There are seven native EF-M lenses and many more with the adapter.

I use canon cameras and I love your vids, but I think your 4K comments are a little short sited and dated. As you know the t2i, t4i, etc was an entry level camera for many amateur film makers. Yes most consumers don't need 4K but a poor film maker does want it even if they're publishing in 1080. With Panasonic and Sony putting 4K into sub 1000 dollar cameras, canon should follow suite, at least with their mirrorless offerings. I have an M5 and that thing would sell like hot cakes to youtubers and other video folks that left canon for Sony over the last few years if it had 4k. Canons idea of not wanting to canibalize their other offerings is a dated way of thinking for this industry and all they did was lose the people that can't afford canon cameras that do have 4K, and they bought gh4's, g85's, a6300's, etc. Video features is what is going to keep some of these companies afloat, especially when it comes to the "consumer" lines.

The M6 is a grand idea but I agree, I want an EVF because the sun wipes out your flip screen, you will love that EVF. Plus composition is way easier vs. The rear screen alone. Though I can see some won't be bothered too much with no EVF. They use Smartphones. As do I, but want that EVF, and I love mine on my Panasonic G7.

It would be dope for Canon to crank out some more mirrorless cameras and maybe a FX body. More competition and more gear to talk about! I just hope they don't leave out a lot of the awesome video features in in their DSLR lineup from the mirrorless cameras. I'm not sure if they would want to take away from their strong video DSLR following.

If Canon really wanted to make a splash, they should have considered a Full Framed Mirrorless body to go head to head with the Sony A7 series. A solid FF offering with great handling ergonomics, sensor, and lens lineup (even a native adapter that would allow for EF lenses to be used would be a huge deal).......I enjoyed your review of the M5, and just kept thinking.....if only Canon made a FF Mirrorless at a $1300-1500 price point could do some damage. What are your thoughts Jared?

M5 looks good I really liked your real world review Jared. Philly looks nice from the steps. I'm a pro shooter, if I had more disposable money I'd get an M5 but it makes sense to keep investing in my current system and keep an eye out on the mirrorless lineup.

I have a Panasonic that responds to touch when my eye is on the viewfinder, and it's really useful to control the small focus areas with my nose. my nose becomes my third hand.

Not for Vloggers!! Vloggers need some Wifi function to allow triggering of video remotely if they shoot themselves alone. The stupid M5 does not allow video triggering through WiFi! That can only be done with 80D. Canon is a retarded company and their selections make no sense to me any more. And I own over 20L Lenses and their C300 cams. I was so looking forward to get the M5 for Vlogging due to its size but after I bought it I realized I can only use WiFi to trigger Stills, not video! What?!!! Why Canon, Why?!!!!

Sam Hudson V-logging doesn't just involve holding the camera and pressing record and fill the frame with your face. There are points of B-roll where you want to capture yourself come and going through a path, go stand far away, and do other things that require precise focus on one area of the frame. For that, you need a camera operator and where you are your own shoot's camera operator you meed WiFi camera function to operate it. Furthermore, if you want to use longer lenses for shallower DOF and compression (esthetic choice) you are too far to see the flipped screen. WiFi Function is important for these situations. Yes, the average Vlogger just talks into the camera with a shotgun mic. But there are more advanced uses possible with the WiFi function.

Real World Endo Yes I am aware of that, I have done similar vlogs myself. But what I mean is what's to stop you from setting up the shot, hitting record then walking to the point where you need to be and then acting out the clip. Realistically the Wifi isn't going to have that much range either. I know Casey uses this technique also. However, I do agree that for certain shots wifi will be a benefit although again, range is going to be an issue.

I will totally buy this camera. There is the whole vlogging market who wanted exactly this camera. The EVF is not important for a video camera. And having the m3, I haven't found anything else close to how functional it is for fast video shoots. The M5 was a waste for me but I will get the M6.

Denton Field depends how good the built in mic is on this. Not sure if this one has a jack for an external mic but ya wouldn't be able to use it anyway with that flip up screen. Honestly if you're just hand holding, the m5 flip down screen isn't bad. Obviously it's useless with a tripod though

Honestly I love my M6 so much... but I should’ve gotten the M5 I regret it because of the evf and I really dig the flip down screen. I’m not a fan of screens that flip sideways for the m50. In the end everyone has their own preferences. Also really disappointed with canons new full frame mirrorless I wish they would just improve the M series. I hope they do because I love these cameras!

The flip-down screen on the M5 is a deal-breaker for vloggers, who will probably have a tripod or some sort of handle attached to their cameras. And, quite honestly, the flip-up screen on the M6 makes it tricky as well because then if you mount your microphone on the hot shoe, it will block the screen. The M50 design is definitely the best if you're a vlogger, and I hope the M5 Mark II incorporates the side-articulating screen. Hopefully, Canon holds nothing back from the M5 Mark II.

I prefer the M5 with the built-in EVF. I have the original M and it's a pain to shoot in bright sunny day because I could hardly see or not see the image on the screen. Also shooting at eye level tends to steady the camera when taking pictures.

when buying a camera with interchangeable lens, you should always look at the lens selection. Canon's mirrored selection is good, but mirrorless selections are minimal. adding adapters to use traditional Canon lens means you're not really getting the benefit of using a mirrorless....

Thanks for this! I have had a 7D for about 6 years or more already with the 24-70 L lens. I'm dying for an upgrade but waiting for a full frame mirrorless one might be the way to go instead of a 5D M4... I was so tempted to go for the Sony a7rII but it would be a waste of my lenses and external flash. What do you think? :)

I'm completely new to the photography world, I'm startint my own vlog soon when I purchase a camera, I was going to get the M5 DESPITE it not being able to be sat on a tripod due to the screen flipping down instead of up, the M6 however has it fipping up with the subtraction of the view finder which can be optionally added? So I am assuming it can be treated as an accessory? On when you need it and off when you don't? But in any cause it seems to me the M6 is now the preferred camera specifically for vlogging in a interview/informative content style channel, rather than be better for actual photographers looking for amazing shots/stills.

Ski Dabs Look at Flickr and see which photos trip your trigger the most. Then see what they used. This will inform your decisions massively. I'd say something with a sharp lens super high dynamic range is perfect for nature, but maybe that's not your thing. There's so many cameras out there appropriate for hiking, it's not even funny. You really need to narrow down your choices a bit by figuring out which looks appeal to you. After that, it'll be a matter of finding something with the right size/price/weight from the brand or brands you ended up preferring. Actually, for cheap, you may want to consider the Olympus E-M10 II kit. That's an awesome starting camera! You'll save nearly a grand, but if you look at review photos online, you'll see that it has pretty stellar IQ.

Jared Polin , if you wanted the attention of your viewers in Japan with this Japanese version of "I shoot RAW" , you got it . The Japanese version sounds a bit odd ( literal translation ) , though it fits with the aesthetics of the English version . IMHO "絶対RAW撮影" would be closer to the intention , though it wouldn't fit the aesthetics of the English version . But you already TM "俺の撮影はRAW"

Same thing with the M5. This reminds me of the samsung nx500 but probably without things like focus peaking.

Canon should've name this M3 Mark 2 instead of M6. This makes their previous M1, M2, & M3 obsolete in the naming consistency. Also note that Canon naming convention is too confusing for consumer. Low number in all product means lower end or last generation model not the other way around.

I agree there is no NEED for 4k on this camera - but people think they need it. They should just put it on there.

I might get one. I had an EOS--M and used a Loupe when I wanted to put my eye up to it. Voila! No problem of "Does the EVF or the LCD show the 'real' photo?" It's a little less "wieldy" with a loupe, but for video, it's great, esp with a small handle, bracket or cage. Hoodman makes a nice loupe, and eBay has magnetic ones that pull off and on quickly.
