Also, the R6 & R6MII are both full frame cameras, but lack a top down screen and a mini HDMI. The R6’s only use micro HDMI.

Forgive me, I made the mistake of saying that the R6’s and RP are not full frame. Originally I wasn’t planning on including the RP in this comparison, but mentioned it in the video. Apologies for the confused. RP, R6 & R6II are all full frame. When making this video the R8 wasn’t announced yet. Thanks for watching 👍🏾

Great video , thankx ! I've got mine since about 3 years now and I still love it. The 30 MP ist just great, the file size is manageable and it has enough room for cropping and enough resolution for what I am doing. The things that people are complaining about don't bother me, I can manage my workflow around them with ease. Still a great camera in 2024. I cannot see myself switching soon, I rather buy good glass for the money.

And that’s why you my friend are a rarity. I completely agree. I use the EOS R paired with both EF & RF glass, even Sigma and the photos I get are just as good as the R5.

I actually just bought a used EOS R last week for JUST UNDER $1000 in pretty solid condition and a low shutter count. I came from a 5DMKIV 2 years ago. The autofocus has some getting used to, but i've heard really good things about this camera so we'll see. There ARE 3 MAJOR cons I dislike so far: (1) No joystick -- I miss using this to find where i want my AF to be. (2) NO scroll wheel -- I like being able to use that to cycle through AF points and also image playback and yes, like you mentioned (3) no dual card slots. I DO like having 2, because 2 of everything would be nice :).

I completely agree . There’s should never be a camera in this price range that doesn’t have a custom scroll wheel. The touch bar I never use especially since the screen is touch. To compensate for not having the scroll wheel built on the camera, I think I mentioned in the video that you can customize the RF lenses with a scroll ring on the lens to any setting. Still better to have it on the camera though. All in all, great photo camera and also if you can deal with the 2x crop, it’s not bad in video mode either. But photos is where it’s at. I shoot multiple Panasonic S5 II for Video but have shot Wedding Photography Professionally for 4 years with the R, not one issue.

Great summary of your experience with the EOS R. I had been a 6D Mk II user for several years and in June of last year made the decision to move to mirrorless. My local camera store helped me with trading in my 6D and several RF lenses (including the EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS) for the EOS R. I decided not to use an adapter with the EF lenses and so I started anew with RF mount lenses only. Today I shoot with the “trinity” in RF mount lenses. I consider myself a pro hobbyist photographer.

Right now, I'm a Canon shooter who shoots with a 5D Mark III. I like that camera a lot, but noise performance and better autofocus is something I really want from a camera now for the scenarios I tend to shoot. Higher resolution, even by a few MP wouldn't hurt, as the Mark III is 22.3 MP. Respectable, but more would be great since I also started printing. The R and R7 are cameras I'm considering, but I'm also considering switching to Fujifilm to something like a X-H2, since their system is super affordable and a very appealing option as a digital counterpart to film photography, which I primarily do. All three cameras would be primarily for photography, but I would also use them for video. What's holding me back from the R is the rolling shutter performance for video is terrible, 1/12 per second is really bad in cropped 4K, not to mention that the crop on 4K video is 1.8x, more than even APS-C which I could stomach, but not past that. Everything else is pretty much a winner, especially as a photo camera, very clean, 30.3 MP is PLENTY, good autofocus, that EVF is very enticing. Hard decision, still deliberating.

Decisions, decisions. Honestly, we’ve all been there. I left Panasonic for similar reason mostly for low light and autofocus reasons. Otherwise Panasonic is a great brand. As for the dilemma you find yourself in, I’ll say that I chose to stick with Canon b/c I liked what they were doing with their new RF Lenses and cameras. For me, b/c I do this full-time investing in more expensive glass was a chess move for the future. I think that either camera you choose you’ll love. Just make sure that that camera ticks off 70% of what you’re looking for in a camera or the top 3 things you need in a camera body. When I bought my Canon C70 here are the things I needed: 1) Great Autofocus 2) Lens Options & 3) Audio XLR Inputs. Whatever you decided I hope it inspires you.

@@swnup it’s all good! I’m using the sigma art 1.4 35, 50, 85! How’s the auto focus on the R? I’m slowly enjoying wildlife photography at the moment but I’m afraid the RP is lacking in that department in terms of tracking fast objects. I also don’t want upgrade to R6, it’s a little to expensive at the moment for me.

I believe the R’s are on sale right now too. $1300 on amazon. Compared 1800 new 4-5 years ago.

@@claudearreza9461 The EOS R has face tracking autofocus and it’s pretty fast . It’s probably not as fast as the updated autofocus seen in maybe the recent released cameras (R6II, R5,R3 etc) but I haven’t had a moment where I said, this camera autofocus sucks . Works great

The R6 and RP and R8 are all full frame. The only cameras you mentioned that are not full frame is the R7 and R10

A few other reviewers had mentioned that the color science on the EOS R resembles the DSLR look (out of the camera) and the newer mirrorless cameras have a different formula (out of camera). I also wonder if there is an anti-aliasing filter on the EOS R (or it could be the editing software - I use Canon's free editing tool as I do not like over editing photos). Have you noticed either of these issues? I want the top menu, slide bar and 30 mega pixels in my next camera (couple of years away); question is do I buy a newer model to also get a new processor and higher frame rate or stay with an EOS R. I do not need new magical AI or auto-focus tricks - happier with clear lenses with no scratches or dust with any current camera

All good questions. Some of the issues you mentioned I’ve haven’t experienced at all. For any of the other reviewers you’ve watched to say that the EOS R to resemble a DSLR, I would question their review. If you take look at any of the video & photo examples I showed in my review I think the quality really speaks for itself and we shouldn’t get so caught up in over accessing. At this point, all the cameras are good and there are very little difference between images from brand to brand. As for which one you should buy in two years, the EOS R, R10 and R8 are all great entry level cameras for the RF Mount. But also, if you can it might be good to rent before you buy to see for yourself. Hope this response answered your questions . Appreciate you watching ✌🏾

@@swnup the other reviewers were suggesting that the R color science maintained the colors that Canon's reputation was built on and the newer cameras are subjectively different. This would apply for out of camera photos and was a point in the R's favor in their judgement. Very subjective and requires having both types of cameras to validate for oneself.

Got it, now I’m following you. To be honest, I think canon still has the best out of camera color science for stills. You can’t go wrong with any of the Canon R lineup . Definitely makes editing easier.

Technically, the next full frame camera in the rf line is the canon r6, which is now around $2200 new. ;)

Correct, I got lost in all the EOS R that have come out . Yes, the R6M1 & R6 mark II are both full frame cameras. But with that said, the cheaper camera EOS R, is still just as good as the 2018 EOS R .

I started with the Lumix GH5 in 2018. I honestly think the only thing holding Panasonic back from really competing is their auto focus, but from what I've seen from online reviews, the S5II autofocus is the best Panasonic has released. But overall, I loved , my Lumix GH5. The colors, the sharpness, ease of use, etc. You thinking about getting the S5II? Thanks for watching!

@@swnup Yes, I'm thinking of upscaling my videos from the EOS R to S5II. My EOS R struggled a bit with low light and auto focus for video. The lack of IBIS required me to use a gimble every time. I want to travel light. S5II's IBIS is insane. It better than Sony and Canon in online reviews. In some reviews, it's low-light performances have edged out Canon and Sony. I can use all my EF lenses with it. Lumix prime lenses are also light, compact and affordable. All these attributes for a cool $1997. I will miss Canon's easy interface and color science though.

That’s dope. You honestly can’t go wrong. Panasonic has the best IBIS of all the camera brands. My Lumix GH5 IBIS is still beating newer camera IBIS. You mentioned that the EOS R isn’t that great in low light. Are most lighting scenarios you film under with available light or are you bringing in additional lighting?

EOS R is my first and i got it here in nigeria $1500 around october last year, my only regret is video quality and i cant compare that to today’s cameras

I agree . When it comes to photos it’s still a beast, but leave a little to be desired in video. But for anyone who is learning or just getting started in video it still films in 4K and Full HD in slow motion 60fps .
