Love what you said about focusing on what the camera is capable of as opposed to what it can’t do. I hate when people trash cameras for not living up to their specific needs. There are so many cameras on the market, find one that fits your needs and be happy. Great review!

I'd love to see your take on the video side of the camera. Yes a lot of people have reviewed the specs and overheating, but I'd love to see someone with an actual talent for creating content use the camera rather than just someone complaining about the specs. There's a serious drought of footage with this camera because everyone is so focused on what it can't do.

It's so pleasant listening to how you review product in a real world rather than reading hate comments in DPreview comments section who compare pointless stuff like something a people would never do in a real world use like underexposing by 6 stops just to test the dynamic range. Real world use and your experience with it is the most important.

Great insight and beautiful images as always, Sam! For me, I’m not initially planning on using it as a primary photo camera, but I must admit, my recent tests have over-exceeded my expectations and reminded me so much of why I previously enjoyed Canon. If there’s one thing I’d say tops all, it’s the ergonomics. Definitely the most expensive glove I’ve ever bought, but damn it fits well!

I definitely agree with your overall take away that all the top notch new cameras (and esp. the EOS R5) are more than capable to handle almost all photography needs these days. As a photographer who started in film and shot with Nikon N8008s in the 90s, new photographers have no idea how far we've come. Back in those days, it was all manual focus, light metering, 36 chances per roll to get it right, and no chimping. Well, unless you used a clunky NPC Polaroid back to get a stamped sized, blurry preview of what the shot would look like. It's really too easy now. That's why everyone's a photographer and it's more difficult than ever to get paid work.

Here's the problem I have with the "It's primarily a photography camera with some video features" thinking: How much was added to the cost of this camera because of those video features. If you took away the 8k, and the 4k 120fps. Maybe even limited it to 4k 30fps, would it still be a$4,100+ camera? (I say $4,100 plus because a cfexpress card is pretty much mandatory if you want to make use of all that this camera offers) Because if we're just supposed to look at the higher-end video features as just some sort of passing add-ons then they're nothing but gimmicks and you're paying more for the camera than you should. And again, Canon was the one who put emphasis on those video features. Both in their own direct marketing and by giving so many preview builds to video-focused youtubers. If we're not meant to make frequent use of the video side of the camera then fine. Drop the features and drop the price. This is why the R6 will likely be a much better value. You're losing video features that you're apparently not really expected to use much anyway. You keep the best features of the R5, such as the auto-focus and IBIS, and the only real negative people can come up with is that it's "only" 20mp. AND you're saving $1400, which could be a nice down payment on that sweet, sweet 28-70mm f2 lens. As it is, this is an overpriced "photography" camera. Either make the use of the video-side of this camera more practical so that it can truly by the hybrid camera it was presented as OR release a slimmed down version without the higher video features and for a lower price. A middle ground between the current R5 and the R6. Do that and it'll be a perfect camera.

Nice review! Appreciate the look from a photography standpoint. I just posted a POV video a couple days ago shooting animals on a safari ride at Walt Disney World. I’m quite impressed so far with my R5. The autofocus is the first thing that stood out to me... so snappy even compared to my 1DX2. I don’t own the RF 28-70 yet, but considering it down the road. Thanks for the video!

I've had the EOS R5 show the *temperature warning* icon during at least three weddings while only shooting stills. It happens on both of my EOS R5 bodies and the only way around it is to power off the bodies when not actively using them.

@Kaisolostudio 3 жыл бұрын
Jared Ribic oh no 😂 are you shooting 20FPS non stop? LOL jk
@JaredRibic
@JaredRibic 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kaisolostudio - I wish! It was just casual pre-ceremony shooting during three weddings. I rarely shoot on burst mode anyway and if I did I would use 12fps rather than 20. Anyway, I believe it's based on the amount of time the cameras are powered on. I wasn't shooting very much with either camera yet they both got the *temperature warning* about the same time (within 2 hours). If you use the EOS R5 for stills just be sure to power it off when not shooting and you'll be fine. Every other wedding I've done since learning this trick has been fine.

I totally get your general thoughts about cameras, they are tools used to do work and realize our vision and I agree 100%. But in the case of the R5 & R6 we, as consumers, are not the ones that want more, we just want what Canon said they were selling (talking ONLY about video during months). You can’t market your products to do stuff they can’t do. Consumers are not beta testers. But Man that R5 looks like a great camera 🤣 Cool video and superb pictures ✌🏻

When I bought my 28-70, I took a gamble. The EOS R did great, was very impressed. And then they announced the R5. Instant pre-order. Having shot a couple of weeks with this combo now, I truly think the R5 with the RF 28-70 is the overall benchmark for Canon. Super versatile, smooth and instant AF, unique 3-primes-in-one pin sharp image quality. Super happy. Thanks for sharing your footage and images, looks great!

The only reason you want to upgrade is if it has something it predecessor doesn't have. In R5, I would say the eye AF is excellent and IBIS that may make me want to upgrade. R6 is another great option but I rather have everything upgraded then sacrificing the EOS-R megapixel.

I would say no, but if you’re going to use it for video at all, you’ll def need CFExpress
@Digi20
@Digi20 3 жыл бұрын
i you plan on doing huge burts at 12 or 20 fps, the cfexpress will write the images away quicker/you get more buffer. and you need it for 8k raw video. also, transfer of huge files to the computer (if it has speedy SSDs) will be faster with a cfexpress card. otherwise a fast uhs2 sd card is fine.

I noticed on my R5 that stuck pixels (or are they hot pixels?) appear whenever the shutter speed is set to below 1/10 sec with a black image (lens cap on), and get more evident the slower the shutter speed - most noticeable at 30 sec shutter. Any shutter speed above 1/10 sec and faster, they completely disappear. This leads me to believe perhaps they're hot pixels, not stuck pixels? Interestingly, they appear on the EVF and LCD even before taking a picture. Does anyone have this as well?
