Great video Lee, thank you. I have been a Sony shooter for about 6-7 years, and have waiting and waited for them to produce something even remotely as user friendly as this camera. The option for a fully articulating touchscreen with menus that makes sense and are easy to navigate without even having to read a manual, and endless program ability in a beautiful mirrorless camera with some of the craziest lenses coming out ever. I am about ready to sellMy brand spanking new A7R4, and A9II, Because I was so sick I was getting lost in those menus and the camera not doing what it should be. I also had purchased almost every G master lens,That I will sell with The camera bodies. Your video was really excellent thank you so much. It was essentially a tutorial and how amazing this camera is. I had it for one day and was shooting Christmas lights on timers in HDR mode that would have taken so much more effort to have sound in the Sony systems. I remember one night in Paris with an experienced photographer trying to find in the menus where the bulb mode was ha ha it took us about 20 minutes at midnight.Anyway, thank you again and I would really encourage you to spend more time with this camera because for Photography alone in my opinion it blows away all my Sony cameras and I have not even gone into the video modes yet. I’m sure 120 FPS of 4K video would suffice in almost any situation now and should not produce too much overheating. Every firmware update they have improved the overheating issues with the exception of the most recent one I believe (1.2.0). Thank you again will be following any follow up videos you may have on this truly amazing camera. It is today the best camera I have ever held in my hands. Thank you canon for delivering.

Solid video and always good to see Canadian talent like Chinna. As someone who now owns the R5 (my pre-order finally came in a month ago), I gotta say... it truly is an incredible camera. It's a step in the right direction for Canon, having used them for nearly 20yrs now professionally. I'd put the R5 up there with the original 5D and 1Dx in terms of a milestone in photography gear.

100% it’s too bad they felt they had to tack on things like 8k video to pull in buyers. Everything I dislike about the camera is related to a lot of the video functionality and usability. But since I didn’t want to talk too much about video I left it out

I thought this was a good, even handed review. I've had the camera for about a month and a half but only had one major shoot with it. One thing's for sure, with the heavy RF glass (I was using the RF 85mm f/1.2, which is a beast) the reciprocal rule does not apply! Even with IBIS on, and shooting at 1/200th of a second, I noticed motion blur on a number of images. I guess it's because of the higher resolution of the sensor. I will be trying to keep my shutter speed upward of 1/300th of a second for most work if possible.
@markrigg6623
@markrigg6623 3 жыл бұрын
Well said. Keep that shutter speed up.
@LeeZavitz
@LeeZavitz 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes there is no rule you just gotta shoot what the lighting conditions and movement are. If the model isn’t moving (like the example I showed) there’s no reason a shot at 35mm should randomly have eyes out of focus at 1/160 with ibis and lens Is. That was only one example. I had lots of situations where I was up at 1/4000 with the same problem. I don’t consider it motion blur. It just looks like the focus shifted slightly out.

I have looked through about 10 reviews of canon's R5 and react to the fact that those who did the reviews and are critical of the video function do not seem to have made any of their own films or projects. The criticism has been that the camera overheats and shuts off after about 20-30 minutes when filming in 8K. Regardless of whether you make a "feature film", a short film or a documentary, you do not film 20-30 minutes in a row. You do not make scenes that are so long, do you? of course you make breaks more or less long. I think R5 is probably great for video 8K and no one should refrain from buying because there is a risk of overheating. Plan how to film so this is not a problem.

@camxiong
@camxiong 3 жыл бұрын
The price is indeed steep, but that's pretty in line with how much the 5D series normally cost. Also i find it humorous when people don't recommend the camera for video, but currently in the mirrorless camera world nothing else offers better specs even when you discount the features that overheat. The A7S isn't even a comparison because that camera has a identity crisis.
@markrigg6623
@markrigg6623 3 жыл бұрын
Not having many eyes slightly out of focus, maybe 5 % or so, if that. And this seems in line with other reviews. I jumped a bit when you said the AF was "nearly" as good as Sony. Its better than on my Sonys as far as I can tell. I notice with the examples you showed the shutter speed was only 1/160 which isn't enough on such a high resolution camera to eliminate the possibility of motion blur in my opinion. Either from the camera or the subject. Don't be afraid to use the ISO abilities of these modern cameras. There's too many photographers producing noise free images that are just ever so slightly soft due to insufficient shutter speed. Just my 2 cents worth. Overall review was good.
@AllgoodthingsTv
@AllgoodthingsTv 3 жыл бұрын
This is great point about the noise free images being slightly out of focus. ISO 3200 and 6400 look great out of this camera. For internet purpose (Instagram, etc.) no one will notice any difference between these speeds and lower ISOs.
@markrigg6623
@markrigg6623 3 жыл бұрын
@@AllgoodthingsTv Absolutely. Theres also a weird quirk to how our vision works where having a little bit of noise actually increases the level of percieved detail we see in our images. Only learned this recently from another channel and there does seem to be some validity to it. And yes, on the net its hard to see noise. Even when printing it takesa fair bit of noise to show up on prints up to A3. So people shouldnt be as paranoid as they are over a bit of noise.
@LeeZavitz
@LeeZavitz 3 жыл бұрын
That was only one random example. There’s lots of shots I was up around 1/4000 and saw the same issues. The model wasn’t moving and 1/160 with ibis and lens IS shouldn’t cause the eyes to be slightly out of focus. And then the next shot after it be in focus. I used it as an example because of those reasons. If I used an example of someone moving around or fast walking towards the camera I realize there is going to be images out of focus because that’s normal.

@@LeeZavitz Something amiss because pretty much all the other reviewers are happy with the hit rate they're getting. Maybe you did have a crook copy. Or maybe a setting. Back button focus with servo tracking and release priority set to "focus" is working awesome with mine. Just a thought.
@denisbellerose273
@denisbellerose273 3 жыл бұрын
@@LeeZavitz I have had a Canon R5 since the beginning of August and in terms of the sharpness of the first image taken in burst mode with the camera did you pay attention to these two elements? First, the camera can trigger the burst shot in servo mode even if the first frame is not in focus. This is an adjustment, it's called trigger or focus priority under menu tab no: 4 in the AF section on the R5. Secondly, it should be noted that shooting with anti-flicker can also slow down continuous shooting.

@SpikeColgate
@SpikeColgate 3 жыл бұрын
OK, just a heads up that this was being caused on high iso noisy images in Lightroom with Lens Corrections turned on. Seems the correction for distortion in the corners of the images pulled the noise apart and created a kind of circular banding in the shadows.

The AF of the R5 is faster than the Sony's, it's also better with the animal eye AF, for myself I have no problems focusing in low light or against the light, it all depends on the settings you have made for the AF in the R5, there is so much you can change that it can come out worse and you have to start over again Image quality is on parr with the Sony's, also DR is about the same, sharpness also the same Ergonomics is better with the Canon and also the menu is nicer with the Canon, that being said the new menu from the Sony is also a big step forwards it's just depends on what you want to do with it, for myself I use Canon camera's for stills and use my Sony's for video The big reason for me for using the Canon's for stills is mostly ergonomics and image quality, but they can't beat Sony regarding viideography

I noticed on my R5 that stuck pixels (or are they hot pixels?) appear whenever the shutter speed is set to below 1/10 sec with a black image (lens cap on), and get more evident the slower the shutter speed - most noticeable at 30 sec shutter. Any shutter speed above 1/10 sec and faster, they completely disappear. This leads me to believe perhaps they're hot pixels, not stuck pixels? Basically no camera like that is made for dedicated long time video use. If you mainly do videos, there a cameras that are made for that use case. Like Canons C70 which has an RF mount but is made for videos

Nice review, but with Canon's deceptiveness and the cost of their new lenses I won't buy Canon ever again!

you’re just seeing screen capture mixed with KZfaq compression. There’s no weird colour stuff. I would only mention it if I saw it
