A user on Baidu (sdp.io/baidu) has been attempting to solve the Canon EOS R5 8k video overheating problem AND THEY DID IT. They seem to have actually solved it by removing the internal battery. Tony Northrup describes the solution, why this makes perfect sense, and how it can be applied to possibly permanently fix the EOS R5 overheating problem.

Jonathan Thill lol I don’t think it’s going to kill their camera. Removing cmos battery isn’t anything new in computers. It’s clear that canon is just “allowing” people to taste 8k. Personally I’ve always hated canon as they release one little feature and hold back for future releases and every little release is an “update” or “upgrade”. Canon has always purposely held back certain features and charged a premium to what other companies have been selling for a reasonable price. If it’s got a heat sink and automatic shut off with the actual over heating then it will shut down via software like it already does. What they are doing is just absolute bs for someone to pay $4000 on a camera that is being programmed not to even function at what they say it will do. I’m not chasing the resolution bandwagon that everyone else is on but canon is garbage and always will be. They didn’t even add 1080 60p for the longest time which is a feature found on iPhones. The cameras that did shoot it, well they used to cost over $6000. They separate “pro” from “consumer” and lump the features together for each and the pro is charged a premium where the consumer level just lacks any useful features. They want idiots to buy this camera and their “professional” cameras as they cost way more. There’s plenty of other companies who give way more features than unusable 8k. People are just foolishly attracted to resolution like it will make everything better, which it won’t. Stick to 4k or go buy the new Ursa 12k or an 8K red. Canon blows and has some serious marketing and quality checks to figure out.

If you block the battery compartment door open sensor then you can trick it into not writing values into temp memory and then you just pop out the main lithium battery and pop it back in and it resets the time (to five minutes each time, not twenty though), see thread on DPREVIEW. So there is no need to go through the mess of opening it all up and trying to manage to install some hack switch and break sealing and so on.

@KirilVatev

I have an unsubstantiated theory about this (being a software developer who regularly releases products). I believe that this camera is unfinished. We've seen this camera in the hands of various photographers for months, and rumors that it is already in the hands of photographers for several months before that. This tells me that the camera was more-or-less feature complete for a while now. However, that doesn't always mean it is entirely complete. Things that don't need to work don't have to work until it is actually ready for release. We all suspect that a camera like this will have heat limitations, and so did the engineers working on it. But they don't actually have to fix it before getting it in the hands of photographers in order to get feedback. They have to work on autofocus, video codecs, etc. but for heat management, they can put in some dummy code just to make sure those early pre-production units don't have catastrophic failure while... that the type of thing you can finish up in the last 6 months. But then the pandemic happened, and lab work has largely not been occurring (not to mention Japan's working culture not being conducive to remote work). I think Canon decided to go ahead and release the camera with the dummy code still in the firmware, planning to finish it in an update once they are able to get everyone back to work. Again, just a theory, but I have also seen things significantly smaller than a pandemic causing companies to release unfinished products when an update path is known to exist.

I think the reason people are really mad about the overheating limitations, is because no one thought that just having the camera on, was going to eat at your 8k/4k HQ record time. @@jaegerschtulmann Because Canon probably doesn't want to risk camera sensors and internals getting and is playing it save. Every camera overheats. And the R5 works reliable pithing its defined parameters. A time/heat limit including indicators etc is not unreliable. After all you should also keep in mind that those cameras are photography devices with weather sealing in a closed body. For this, what they are capable of is already amazing. But if you need reliable video recording devices neither Canon nor Sony nor other manufacturers offers a regular mirrorless or DSLR for that, there are specific video devices for this job (and the mentioned manufacturer have them)
@stevewestonphotography

I believe Canons deceitful marketing and malpractices are shameful. When are they going to learn that millions of users who would buy a fully functioning R5 would never be in the market for a Cinema Range camera and so they are not "protecting sales of higher end Cinema cameras" by building in limits, but they are driving people to lose faith in Canon and try out Sony, Panasonic, and Nikon. The people who need a Cinema camera know exactly why they need one and I do not think they would choose an R5 just to save money. They may add an R5 or two as B or C roll cameras. Sort it out Canon, you promised us the earth, you charged us for it, now deliver it!!

I have seen little that convinces me that this is a software limit and not a hardware one. The battery removal only tricks the camera into thinking it’s running for the first time; every time. If I remove the Rev limiter (software rewrite) on my car, yes it now revs to 10krpm and it will do so until it doesn’t as it wasn’t designed to do that and it will fail at some point. That could be 1hr, 1 week, 1year but it will fail as the hardware wasn’t designed for that. This is a dangerous video and somebody is going to do this mod and it’s going to end in tears with £4K wasted. Wait for Canon to rewrite the firmware, they will probably edit the thermal limits and software interaction to allow longer and quicker return to recording. You really think their engineers couldn’t figure out how to remove a battery or just turn the overheat protection off.

This actually seems plausible. One of the reasons the 1D series of cameras is able to deliver its top-end constant framerate (ish) is due to the engineering of its batteries. If you use a battery from a previous generation, even though it is physically compatible, Canon usually advises that it will affect your top frame speeds because of the lower power delivery. I would imagine the LP-E6NH probably suffers from this given its two cell design and the increased power requirements of the R5 with its mirrorless technology (mainly the always-on displays).

No. There are many cameras out there where this happens. I'm also pretty sure that some Nikon(?) cameras only provide the full burst rates when the optional battery grip is installed. It seems that a certain amount of power is necessary to reach "full speed". Btw. some testers can confirm that the full burst rate also works with much lower than 60% battery charge.

Normally you would put limitations like that in place to minimize the chance of component failure during the warranty period. A warranty call basically wipes out the profit from that sale, so you want as few failures as you can get away with. After the warranty has expired failure is OK.

This is a bit disingenuous. This is like saying CPU's can overclock more than the manufacturer says they can, it's software limited. You just need to go into the BIOS and override the safety limit of 100c, to 110c. Yes it's possible, yes it's technically limited by software. You know what tho, it's limited to 100C for extended reliability and stability of the CPU. You cannot say R5 overheating is "fake" without months if not years of use doing this hack, letting the camera go past the software limit. You're basically saying you're more intelligent than the camera manufacturer, with an R&D team that obviously has a vast and immense amount of experience with design and thermal limits. No manufacturer is going to artificially limit a cameras thermal thresholds if they themselves found it to be a non issue. There is a very real reason they limited this Camera to those recording limits. Perpetuating the idea that this might be a viable solution is dangerous. It could make a camera that could last 10yr without issues, die after two years. You don't know. At the end of the day, with my analogy, you're basically saying "Crank the CPU to 110C, you can overclock more"... Technically true, but disingenuous.

@gwal93
@gwal93 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, frying is an appropriate term. Components have heat tolerances and cycles before failure ... pushing these components too far and repeatedly as the camer is meant to take millions of images and hours of video in its life would likely see a lot of returns to Canon under warranty, so they put limits in software to stop people abusing it. If they used more tolerant components and a better design then perhaps the heat could be managed and allow unlimited filming in 8K but I expect the price would not be acceptable to the consumer. There is a reason Canons cinema camera (EOS C700 FF - PL) costs £32,000 and it is only 5.9K, not 8K. Looking at the spec of the CF700 i can't see any limitation of 5.9k recording time, perhaps CFast card size or battery determines that. But a videographer could buy 8 x R5's for the same money and just keep swapping them around, and/or multiple camera angles to equal continuous shooting of the CF700 and it would be in 8K as well.

Ok, I can't read Chinese but I did look at the test. There are some things I was wondering, and maybe you can help me figure out. I am able to read the translation, but sometimes things get lost that way... From what I can tell, they show the temp of the sensor and the CPU in the photos. It looks to me that the CPU continues to get hot while the sensor levels off at some point. Steady increase to temp at about 1C per minute. The highest temp we see is somewhere around 65C if I recall. But, they didn't show the temp after they pulled the battery and redid the timer. Did they not mention it either? It looks like he put the camera back together after that, and didn't check temps anymore. I am curious to know if this temp continues to rise after the workaround is applied, since if that is the case then it likely will get too hot at some point if the camera doesn't force cool down. Do they mention this? Do they mention if the temp of the CPU levels off at some point? I feel like the test only shows us evidence that a timer is involved, not that there is no overheating, or even that there isn't a logical reason for the timer, and the conclusions people are drawing is that overheating isn't real and it's just another Canon cripple. Knowing now how the camera monitors temp, I feel like if the CPU is the problem and it can't monitor that, then a timer might have been the only solution this late in development. Still shady, but not what everyone is saying it is. And they are using the Baidu test as a reference for these claims when they are drawing conclusions not found in that test.

Tony there's actually another possible explanation. A thermal problem like this usually deals with a large thermal inertia. It can be that the camera internally estimates and keeps track of this state too. I.e., it doesn't just one dimensionally determine what to do with temperature, but also with how fast the temperature rises and how much it expects the heatsink to become after some time. This is the only reliable way in this case to ensure 100% that your camera will not reach a certain temperature. The thermal lag due to the inertia makes it impossible to stop at a certain point and expect the temperature not to rise further.

Steve Jobs commented (paraphrasing) that a company's products will get cannibalized in the market. So he preferred to cannibalize Apple products with another Apple product instead of letting a competitor do it to them. By not realizing the higher priced cameras are vulnerable to a competitor coming out with a low priced camera with competitive specs Canon forget they should be cannibalizing their own products and not let Nikon or Sony do it to them. They have left the door wide open for Sony, Nikon, etc. to come in and release a non-crippled camera with similar specs to the R5 at a similar or lower price. The natural tendency as technology matures is to migrate from the high end segment to the lower priced segments. 8K is still somewhat high end but technology is improving enough that it will not be unreasonable for it be available on lower priced cameras in a couple of years and on introductory cameras a couple of years later. At most Canon has a couple of years by themselves with the R5 before someone releases a direct competitor that might be lower priced.

It's about POSITIONING your products, avoid competition between them. If this camera had no overheating issues or any other li,itations, how many people would discard buying C-200/300? Thanks for the video, Tony "Yatch Rock" Northrup! ;) Love the content. To summarize in a sentence, "The outrage is over software limiters, not thermal throttle." I believe the limitations could be for three primary reasons: 1) Longevity. Even if the theoretical heat limits are at Z, allowing users to reach heat Y may degrade the silicone, or weaken soldered connections or other internal parts. Cutting people off at heat X might limit average use-time, but increase lifespan, rather than permit harder use over a shorter lifespan. If they take the negative publicity upfront, they avoid getting it down the road when suddenly a glut of people who bought R5/R6 are unexpectedly in the market for yet another high end MILC, but this time with a bad taste in their mouth. 2) Hero narrative. If Nikon, Sony, or whoever else come along with something flashy, Canon can release a firmware update to reduce the limitation restrictions on heat, thus "increase the value" of their existing products for people who have already bought in, and reinforce Canon's "commitment to MILC" to people who are on the fence. Cheesy, but a smart and affordable move. 3) Proof of concept/long-term vetting. If Canon is using untested hardware, Canon might want to limit how hard users can push the gear, before Canon releases their next product. Learn where the weaknesses are and resolve them, capitalize on strengths, etc. Good or bad, I'm sure there's a good reason why Canon has done what they've done.

I had a hard time believing any engineer would do this by design, so I have always doubted the breakdown, at least until we see it from more than one source. For the most part though, if that is the case, then heat build could be a real issue, and if that is the case, it can be dangerous to allow something that is you know, right against a persons face to heat up to the point that bad things can happen. Makes no sense, you haven't recorded anything yet and the camera is idle, but you've lost precious minutes on your already limited amount of record time. That can only be attributed to some sort of timer counting down, makes perfect sense then.

@@TheElocto Not Necessarily. If you turn on a computer with poor cooling, it is Idling at Desktop. The Temperature will start to raise up. In this example, we say the computer CPU will reach 70C in a long term idle. The computer CPU overheats at 100C. The Room Temp is 20C. We have a video to render. If we turn on the computer and start the render right away (CPU at around Ambient Temp 20C), we have a Temp Δ of 80C from Current Temp to Overheating. If we turn on the computer and let it idle for a long time, the CPU reaches 70C due to idling, and we have a Temp Δ of 30C from Current Temp to Overheating. I think it makes perfect sense. What we need to know is how poor the cooling is on the R5. (Probably not great) And will it overheat when idling/setting up the shot. Or what's the Max Temp when Idling.

So after seeing others confirm this with a battery door hack - I really really hope this is not Canon "testing out" a paygo system as other SW companies have done. Cost of the camera: you get limits a, b, c. Pay $10/mo you get limits a, b only. Pay $20/mo you get limit c only Big thanks to Tony and all for taking the time to figure this out!

My engineer buddy made a really good point-because the sensor is using IBIS now, that means it's mechanically de-coupled from the body, making it much less efficient for heat transfer. This makes the 'fan adapter' rumor make a lot more sense. I haven't seen the tear down, but perhaps they don't have a thermometer on-sensor...? This would also explain the record time vs. actual temp. Explain, but definitely not excuse. In any case, it was a bone-headed move to market the video specs so much with these limits.

It could also be that the battery powers a memory that is where the temperature limit settings where placed during production setup and calibration. So now, even though the thermostat is shouting for overheat, the system ignores it since the reference is now gone when the battery was removed. Just my two cents.

The rechargeable button battery used for the Canon R5 was a MS614. Made in Indonesia. 3 volts and 2.7 mAh. Diameter 6.8mm and height 1.4mm. Probably used to function like a CMOS bty in our desktop PCs - to retain settings.

I believe Canon put the limit there intentionally to keep the camera from frying itself because it hasn't been in enough hands long enough for Canon to really understand how it behaves. Once they have enough data and can be confident it won't turn into a puddle of plastic and metal I bet we'll see a firmware update that raises the limit. Tony have you looked at the Tilta R5 cooling kit? I'd like to hear your thoughts on that.

I disagree with you - you don’t know that extended 8K recording at high temperature won’t adversely cause an unrecoverable electronic/chip failure. All you discovered is a timer. The timer could be used in order to ensure that the unit has time to cool off. It’s not a good design, but you don’t really know.

Just take a look at EOSHD and you will see that the R5 does not overheat AT ALL. Thats the thing.. even 1h 8k and the temps don't go over 60ºC. Its really just a timer and there is no problem with internal heat.

I don’t really get it, why even have the 8k feature in the first place? if they are going to software limit it to make it unusable. I’m sure the 8k files are too big for most hybrid shooters. Also why limit the 4k HQ, that makes no sense. RF is a new mount, it’s by no means guaranteed that Canon EF users will switch over, MC-11 adapter is there to adapt EF lenses on Sony. My only thought was that the 8k feature was a way to get EF users to switch to RF, at which point they actually are locked in, because you can’t adapt RF lenses to anything else. Ultimately we are all locked into whatever lens mount we bought most of our lenses for, unless you have loads of money.
@bernieking5408
@bernieking5408 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure that's a real problem for Canon. The MC-11 adapter works, but it's wonky and doesn't really give anywhere close to native performance. Most Canon users will migrate to the RF mount for that reason. I personally considered moving to Sony but found that it would simply be too expensive to change out my glass. If the MC-11 really worked well, I would be shooting with an A9 II and A7R4 before anyone even heard of the R5. That being said, as a stills shooter I'm very excited for the R5 and have ordered 2... Now, if I could only get one in my hands!

But canon probably limit the recording in software for the long run. Even if you can oblige the camera to shoot while overheating, probably in 1/2/3 years it will die because overheat did damage the camera in the long run... Don't forget this possibility. And if you remove this little internal battery, you loose the warranty...
