The R5c is gonna be perfect for people that need a camera that can do both well in the same body. I’m definitely happy with my C70 + R6 combo. The C70 yields such a nice film esc image and the R6 is a really good stills camera that can act as a pretty good b cam for me personally

I have the exact same setup. C70 for dedicated video projects. Two R6 for event photography or if I need another angle.

You don't mind R6 overheating? I thought I would be fine with it but it's super stressfull with client work.

@@smakujem3966 I’ve never had mind over heat during client work because I’m usually doing short clips. Usually when I setup a two cam interview setup, the interview lasts 10-15 mins so I’m never pushing it close to the 45 min mark before overheating occurs

@@dlovisuals Right, I was doing talking head just today, and it warning showed after 20 min of 4k IPB lite 24 fps. With NINJA V it's a little better but still not perfect. Yesterday I was shooting fashion video with a lot of breaks (after 8 hours I had only 1 hour of footage) and warning stll showed at the end. (R6 + NNJA)

@@smakujem3966 I honestly haven’t even seen a hear warning pop up with the R6. I shoot a lot of 4K 60 in clog3 too. I’m sure I could get it to overheat if I tried (like most cameras) but when I’m using it in the real world it does fantastic

On the Autofocus in Video. Canon just did a livestream with ProAV guys, and said the autofocus is like the one on their latest Pro Camcorders. They listed a model, don't remember which it was. In essence they said its better than the C70, but not as good as the R5. Its somewhere in the middle. Hope that helps.

If I am not mistaken, the autofocus on the R5C in video mode is similar to the one found in the Canon XF-605.

I stopped accepting any gigs where people asked "can you do stills as well?" around 4 years ago. They are different disciplines unless you are just covering a conference or event or wedding. I want to work on well thought out projects that are not just image gathering. Really like the C70 at the mo as my main camera, but the R5c as a b-cam is very tempting especially with timecode. I'm genuinely just a bit nervous to even own a photo camera anymore. I'd rather be really good at one thing than divide my attention. For all those complaining about any lack of feature with the R5c must be insane, it's an incredible feat of engineering that will be great for a lot of people.

Yeah the fact that this thing can do 8K60 RAW internally for $4500 is bonkers but all people seem to be focused on is the micro-hdmi port and lack of IBIS. Literally every big movie ever made didn't have IBIS, and 5 years ago almost all hybrid cameras had microhdmi. I've been shooting for 12 years and the A7S3 was my first cam with full size hdmi. Yeah the cables break sometimes, but they're cheap. A few years ago ago you had to buy/rent a RED to shoot 8K60 RAW, and just the monitor/and I/O for that camera costs as much as the R5C. And pretty much every camera has some annoying thing that you're willing to deal with for the good stuff the camera does. I've been using the R5C for the last few days (rented to try out) and I will say the stills look amazing, I think it wouldn't be a bad option as a B-Cam for you. And since the Photo settings are separate it feels like a cinema camera until you switch over.

In Australia the price of these two cameras is almost exactly the same - $7,500 (R5c) vs $7,700 (C70).

I was already considering buying the R5 this year for high res stills, even though its been out for a while (haven't upgraded my stills camera since the A7Rii) but since we make films as well, the R5C is a no brainer for only a few hundred more since it also does high res stills. Very exciting they are doing the RAW upgrade for the C70 though.....I bet the people who already owned one were so thrilled! That has got to be the first time Canon has blessed an old model with something so powerful! Waited years for Clog in 1DXii and it never came :(

Terrific analysis! I think you covered all the major points. To me, comparing these cameras feels like comparing zoom to prime lenses. If you really need one machine that can do everything, that is, photo and video capabilities in one camera, the R5C looks like the way to go. But personally I’d rather bring a dedicated cinema camera and just slip a photo-centric camera into the kit for stills. If you’re only comparing the video specs, unless you really need 8k, the C70 seems to be superior in almost every way: ergonomics, physical buttons, dynamic range, DGO sensor, ND filters, XLRs, full HDMI, etc. Yes, a CF Express slot would be nice, and an EVF too, but SDs and external recorders have sufficed thus far, and I’d rather add on an adjustable EVF than use the immobile one that is attached to the R5C. Anyway, thanks for the vid. Well done.

Since I already own the R6, my choice would be the C70 and my R6 would then turn into a b cam. The R5C is a weird hybrid to my eyes. Atm I am still pretty happy with my R6/R combo. I would prefer something like the C70 with a fullframe sensor and no crop though.

At last! This was the first R5C video of many that I have watched today that had a fair overview of the camera that was not influenced by marketing factors but by that of pure practical professional use!👏🏾 Many valid points that many others have not pointed out or, if I am diplomatic, they have overlooked!😂 One thing that I find is a deal breaker for me is the fact that it appears to eat batteries which means that if you want to go light (not rigging up with an extra battery), a normal work flow would be to switch off the camera now and again but it seems to have a slow startup time which would mean you might miss spontaneous run & gun shots and that is a definitive no no! Not to mention sticking with micro HDMI!🤬 Otherwise, it is obviously a great camera for some if not many but I see that Canon continues to give a little bit more but still holds back while still protecting their Cinema line which is totally OK but so far their hybrid alternatives just have too many gotchas for my needs!🙏🏾

Your AF statement isn't right. Its the AF in video is from the Canon CANON XF605. It has Eye Detection and should recognize also the back of a head. So yes better than C70.

Really good advice, why they can't put stills auto focus on a cinema camera with ND filters with a lower budjet is beyond me. All we want is 4k shooting. Even 1080p would be good as long as ot was top self 1080p. And had all the cinema camera features.

Like a dummy, I purchased the C70 at the beginning of December, not knowing Canon was releasing the R5C. Had I known, I’d have waited. I absolutely love the C70, but what really give the R5C the edge, for my purposes, is its size. I know, some think it’s too small or doesn’t feel as comfortable as the C70, but I’m of the opposite opinion. Not to mention, a smaller camera makes for less conspicuous shooting, haha! Your videos are the best on web!! I do photos and video for industrial (generally low lights). Till now I used 5dIV and I wanna do a jump in video area. It's better for me: - C70 when they ask me video (using my 5DIV for photos and second camera) - R5C (using my 5DIV as second camera) - R6 (using my 5DIV as second camera) saving lot of money

My advice, get the camera and try it first, it might surprise you !!!! Try it and then make your opinion, I still remember that before with the EOSR people were killing the camera and then almost everybody end up buying, I remember you bought 2 of them, and that camera when from the worst camera ever to the baby C200. My advice, specs are only specs, try it and then make your opinion.

I agree with you mostly. But unless the camera surprises me with internal ND filters, I will always prefer the C70 :D there's just some small things for mw that are dealbreakers and they won't change. I will still get one and replace my R5 to use it for a bts cam, car rig or underwater camera! It's an amazing hybrid. I still think the C70 is better for my kind of work

@@damiencooper I think that's exactly the point, I don't think canon made this camera to compete with the c70, for example for me, I will get the r5C just because what it does and also for the price, because I already have also the canon adapter with VND an a few EF canon lenses, before this camera I was thinking into getting the R6 actually thanks to your videos I made my decision with the R6 I didn't see any reason to go to the R5 at the time, but now for sure, I can wait a bit and then get the R5C. Thanks for all the time you put in your content man. I have been following your channel for a long time, and your videos are always on point and really nice, thanks, man !!!!!!

According to Canon the R5 C has the same eye detect autofocus of the XF-605. It does not have the autofocus of the C70.

You are the first one that said that the 8K raw from the R5 is a problem for the new MacBooks with M1 pro max. What configuration did you test it on? My MacBook is coming next week and I was looking forward to play more with 8K. I ordered the fully spect 14” just for video editing. I was hoping that it will not be a problem since most of the reviews where communicating that it can handle the r5 8K raw.

oh really? I'm yet to see a video that stated that it works well with it. And I am not talking about being able to slap a clip onto your timeline and play it back in a better performance mode. I'm talking about actually editing with it. If you zoom in and out a lot, use titles and color corrections I don't think you'll have fun with that codec...

I think the key factor is if you're going to be taking photos or not? Also portability and style of shooting. Otherwise the C70 is a bit better for dedicated video.

I've never tried DPAF 2, but from what I can tell DPAF 1 works great, even my slow focusing 85 1.2 stayed super locked on at f/1.2. I can't even imagine something being way better than this, DPAF 2 must be insane.

Dynamic range part is wrong, clog 2 is allowing +16 stop and clog 3 14 stops. doesn't mean at all that this is the dynamic range of the camera

You have a lot of experience with feedback about C70, respectfully. I do appreciate your honest opinions about C70. I did try C70. But I would instead choose Canon XF605, or SONY Firmware updated FX6 over C70. They are much more sufficient and desirable for my work. I will buy one of these two this year. Regarding R5C, I have watched all the reviews so far; I don't need 8K for now, but I like it, and R5C would satisfy my needs. I would probably own it. There are no perfect Cameras for everyone.

Damn son at times straight up disisng the R5 ofc it gives a lot of features but if they're confusing or not for you still the check points goes to r5 for full frame and 35 , 8k, dual iso etc

So, if you are a filmmaker or a professional video shooter, go for the C70, if you are a hibrid shooter or do casual video work, go for the R5C

Depends on the type of photography. I shoot a lot of wedding and events. In low light that IBIS is a game changer. R5C doesn't have IBIS.

R5C can shoot 8K 50P on battery. Check the ISO quality, find the breaking point, dual ISO is always better.

C70 might have more dynamic range in clog2 but most of it is buried pretty deep in the shadows with perhaps one extra stop in highlights. Huge bummer to hear about the video autofocus in R5C. Makes me second guess trading in R5 for it. Maybe we will see a update? I’m also pretty excited for the new hot shoe. Would love to see a compact multi-channel Wireless audio solution that plugs into this and is small. Could do wireless shotgun boom setups and wireless lav on two people.

4:15 - But all other resolutions are oversampled from 8K, so even in 4K, it will look sharper, cleaner with less noise!

a lot of people stated that. And it's 100% true although subjective. I like the softer image with a little bit of grain. Also has a softer highlight roll off. The overly sharp image from the R5 looks a bit to video like to me. But again, subjective

Ok you convicted me. So the R5C is a bit of an orphan because if you are hybrid shooter, I still think the R5 makes more sense 90% of time because of autofocus and IBIS. At least the conversation is no longer about Vs Sony. There are some real options in Canon without fear of eating their share of cinema line.

The files from the R5c should be much easier to work with than the original R5. It’s a new raw lite. The 4K HQ is also now the same xf-avc from the c70 so it should be much more manageable in size and playback much smoother which makes it much easier to work with. And that’s what’s got me so stoked as the HQ down sample is gorgeous.

The r5c have same « cinema raw light » like canon cinema cam (c70, c200, c300 mkiii etc…) that is smoother to work and which should allow us to have access to the curve c-log 2. The raw and raw light on r5 is different…same for the r3 6k raw…this is not the « cinema raw light »…

@@peterra2532 oh hm, thanks. That is all very confusing to me haha. In fact when the firmware update its "RAW Lite" came out I actually called Canon and asked if it was the same as "RAW Light" and they basically said that they haven't updated the charts and they didn't even know hahaha

I much prefer 8k and just taking the time to create proxies rather than shooting 4k. 8k gives you so much room for punching in and adjusting framing

Hi Damian, thanks for all your videos on these Canon cameras. I totally agree with you view in regards to the C70 being the better choice for filmmakers. A question if you don’t mind. I burnt out my HDMI on my C70 when powering it from the same battery attached to the camera, I think it might be the order I disconnected the cables after a shoot. Which battery do you use and have you had any issues? Btw canon UK fixed it for free within 10 days. Cheers!

That seems to be an ongoing problem with all cameras. It still works with my C70 but I mainly use it on a gimbal. My HDMI port from my C300III is fried though. And there I rarely disconnect the cables at all :/

One problem with both of these cameras is they don't have built-in ND filters. I see that as one critical reason why you might upgrade from a photo/hybrid camera to a true cinema camera.

Than get the c70. It has build in ND FILTERS, which is fantastic! And the c70 will get an fantastic firmware update in march. To record in canon Raw light (12 bit) and a feature vor Timelapse! Check it out

You missed a point in the resolution section : the 4k video files upto 60fps are oversampled from the 8k sensor and it's fullframe. So you're not getting better quality image from the c70 in terms of the resolution (upto 60fps forsure).

The AF thing is crucial for me. i read that the AF is not as good as the r5 but much better than the c70. - It's hard to believe, since it's the same technology... it would have to be tested. Speaking of which, why has Canon given an R5c to test for so many people who don't know what matters? - And you didn't get any? -

Why though? Never understood the hype. Less MP for photos and not much improvement unless you’re a sports photographer and far less capable in video terms. No NDs, no 180 shutter, weird unbalanced body, less file options, photo menu, less dynamic range, no Clog2 and the price of above R5 and C70

@@damiencooper I ordered the stuff now and already tested it on a shoot yesterday, the monitor is just great in the sun, best choice ever. Unfortunately the arca swiss plate from Smallrig for RS2 doesn't fit the screws on the Tilta Cage. We did a short term workaround. Which one do you use? Yours seems to fit perfectly, but just one screw as far as I can see?

Hello! Currently own a Panasonic S1H/ RED Komodo combo and I'm looking to swap the S1H for a Canon R5C but would like to hear from the users. Ive been researching for about 3 months so Ive read alot of information. Im mostly looking for reviews and experiences now. My concerns are the big cons like battery life, and AF being mostly great but how bad are these in the field? I hear/see mixed results lately. As for the battery life, I don't mind having to swap batteries, but for gimbal use - is the grip the best lightweight solution or is a power bank better? I have a Crane 3s ( so I dont really need S1H Ibis) but I'm hoping to run a Dtap from the 3s Power Bank to cut down weight and solve power that way. Unfortunately, the S1H just doesn't have my needs for solo work (usable/reliable AF, past SD card issues, no video playback container, FF mode rolling shutter is horrendous to where I shy away from FF work and shoot APSC exclusively, external recorder for 12 bit BRAW so its heavier now, L mount, vlog and night shoots don't mix, purple color shifting. I don't mean to bash Panasonic because I've stuck around for this long for their Amazing IBIS, Gorgeous Image Quality and wow that Color Science is Incredible.Truely is a mini Varicam. I'm afraid the Cons outweight the Pros. I am always pushing my Cinematography work so owning a modular RED cinema cam with internal R3D 16 bit RAW like the Komodo fills that need. However, what I need is a quality hybrid I can grab to shoot more photography/videography work but having quality and reliability without the extensive build. I'm thinking a simple build with an R5C, Image Stabilized lens and a mic would cut down weight and hopefully give me what Ive been looking for. Plus, I can always get a cage and rig it up when I want a cinema build as a Bcam. If you've stuck around for the end of the post, thank you! I haven't shot Canon since my old T3i so Canon is basically new to me now. Anyways I've gone back and forth for months and I think testimonials will help me decide. Haven't been able to rent one

sounds like the R5C is the right camera for you to be honest! Go for it! Battery sucks but other than that it's a great all around cam!

@@damiencooper only concern is of they can fix some AF performance on the R5C hopefully in a future firmware. It's the main reason I'd swap the S1H lol

Thanks for the review! Very torn between the R5C and C70. I do everything from corporate talking heads to fashion/music editorial videos. Though my heart is definitely with the more cinematic look, I'm concerned that the lack of full frame or 8K will make the C70 less optimal for commercial use (which includes frequent requests for vertical/in-feed/mutli-aspect ratio cuts) and not as "future-proof". What do you think I should get? Basically - how much less of a vibe is the R5C than the C70? haha.

Full frame doesn’t look as good as S35. My opinion, as well as Hollywood films for a long time. Full frame has a different DSLR thing. Nice to have choices however.

You did not mention the most important advantage r5c shooting all mode in oversample 8k This makes the image much clearer and more accurate, even in full HD The c70 has only two absolute advantages Clog 2 & ND Filter The only reason to stay c70 These are the two points And in almost all other cases, R5 has an absolute advantage Canon r5c raw formats Similar to all Canon Cinema cameras Personally, I never had a problem with raw images of C500 MK2 the raw file type is completely different from R5 The autofocus system is much better than the C70 and Eye tracking and Face Only mode supported in r5c The only reason the Clog2 was not added in r5c protection for C70 and R5 I have no doubt you will buy R5C very soon Me too And do not forget that in R5 You pay a thousand dollars less and you literally get 2 cameras

that's kind of subjective though.. I find the 8k to be looking a little too sharp and clean. Same for the oversampled 4k. I prefer the more DR and the "smoother" image for most of my work

I kept hearing ears5c. My dude, nobody is going to complain if you just say R5C, it's most likely easier for you, since English clearly isn't your native language. Keep it up!

At first I got excited with R5c not heating up.. But why take out the Dual Auto Focus from the video? (It's only available on stills).. No Ibis either? Also Needs external power for 8k 60? Cripple, cripple I will look at the Panasonic Gh6 (Known for great video) then decide to buy it or the c70. seriously. (Shame because I like Canon color in stills, But I do videos, shame

But you don't have to shoot 8k on th R5c all the time right? And I think downsample from 8K to 4k looks amazing... so with 4k on both cameras, which one will give better output? All good tho, I'm getting and R3, lol... good review, keep rockin! 😀

depends.. The R5 will be sharper. But I feel the C70 looks overall better. Smoother, more cinematic, organic. Whatever you wanna call it. The R5 is almost too sharp

@@damiencooper I have both the R5 and the C70 and I have to agree. There is something about the C70 image that is beyond it just not being as sharp. The C70 sensor just gives you better rolloff and a more movie like image.

@@damiencooper The r5c use « cinema raw light » so its 8k raw will be cinematic and organic like canon cinema cam….the raw on the r5 is a different raw…
