I've had mine about four months and love it. I'm an event photographer and have never used it for video but have found that after about a thousand frames in any one session, I don't get the warning light but it does start to freeze up and becomes useless until I shut it down and let it rest for 15 or 20 minutes. Not great when it happens, for instance, at the end of a wedding reception as the couple start to make their grand exit.

You shoot H+? I’ve had a few freeze in H+ when bursting, but a restart always solves that. Have you tried that? I can’t imagine the stress to have the camera freeze during a wedding
@fredrogers4186

@@persvanstrom No, sir. At weddings I shoot single frame only. I've tried all the standard quick reboots including cycling the on/off switch, popping the battery, replacing the battery even though the 'current' battery has a fairly full charge and even popping the lens. Nothing works except letting it sit for a while and, I assume, cool off.

I managed to overheat mine by just waking up the back of the screen to check AF. When I shoot events, which is about 3-5000 photos in a few hours, I never use screen, just viewfinder and never have overheats. Not sure it helps, but that screen can generate a lot of heat is my experience.

Awesome, thank you! I think the R6m1 will go down as one of the best cameras, like R, that still is viable. Yes, it can overheat, but it wasn't intended to shoot continuous for over 30min as it has a hard stop. I love my R6 and took over 100.000 photos last year, so it's a workhorse. Are those codecs easier to edit/grade than the .mp4/IPB standard from internal recording? - for UHD/24-25fps, what recording media (cards for internal/ssd for external) do you recommend? - if you do not set an accurate white balance, how much latitude do you have when your shooting 4:2:2 20 bit or externally recording.

I wished you had spoken a bit about the cons of using this method to avoid overheating. One thing I can think of is you can’t check or monitor autofocus as it won’t show the autofocus face detection or eye detection indicators in Atomos. I would like to know what other cons like that are a part of this strategy if one were to use it like this to avoid overheating in 4k60.
@persvanstrom
@persvanstrom Жыл бұрын
yeah, not using the camera screen can be a problem. I even speak about this in an upcoming video, where I was worried about AF, so kept turning on screen to check and ended up with an overheat. On the otherhand, turning on peaking on my Ninja and I can always tell if I have focus on the right place. I'm just so use to checking camera screen I sometimes forget to use the external monitor. As to speaking about pros and cons, I will try to do that more in future videos and I did so in my just recent posted video. Hope you liked that part better :)

I use Atomos Ninja V, it's almost industry "standard" for creators and independent filmers when it comes to recorders. I has removable SSD's, making it easy to record longer sessions. I bought mine used for 400$ with SSD, dock and cables, so can make a bargin on them. Atomos also has Atomos Cloud Connect, where you can push proxies directly to cloud for faster edit or customer collaboration.

Very dramatic video. Good choices of music to support that drama. When you were counting down the solutions on your fingers, I wanted to see graphics on the screen listing them. To summarize: use dummy battery, remove both memory cards, turn off screen, and fold out screen. Your last two solutions are problematic however. With the Ninja V attached, you can use the R6 screen to change F and ISO in response to external conditions. But I saw that you were presenting the screen on the Ninja, and using the wheel to change camera settings, which is not the F and ISO, so this is confusing (at lest to me). I have the R6ii and the Ninja V. Even at 4K-24P I'm lucky to get 9 minutes before the ninja shuts down.

I used it with my A6700 and I was able to record video over 1hour in 4k120 (in temp =30+ C !!!) and it never overheated in 4k60 on warmer days. these cooling systems are really good and dont take up too much space, I hope more people find out about these cooling systems,they are silimar to the new Ulanzi cooling fans but they are 100X times better because they work on cooling rather than just heat dissipation . The Canon EOS R8 has a maximum video recording time of 2 hours for it's typical long recording format (no-one records 2h in 120fps). That makes the R8 a different camera than R6 that has 30min as a hard limit built into the camera. Sorry if I confused you, that was not my intention :) The hard limit of 30min with internal recording is not possible to bypass. I got 5h as I recorded externally onto the Ninja V. I get your feeling, but it's not that bad when you summarize it. I often shoot interviews for a few hours. Then I still need an external power source, my choice V-mount. Something you would need on any camera. When doing video work an external monitor (or recorder) is often very handy due to all the extra information it can give you. Memory cards or not, are more or less a choice, but with a 1tb SSD recording I would pref over SD cards anyhow. With the external monitor, no need to use the camera monitor and we are all set :)

I can only imagine how hot it can be. I noticed on a recent shoot, where I shot interviews for 11h straight (yup long day). Even if I had everything set up as I described my R6 overheated a few times. I realised it was when I was worried about focus and I kept turning on the camera screen. Not sure that info will help, but I would avoid using the back screen as much as possible. I think you could get another 10min from that. Then 30min in 4K is still the limit as that is when recording stops, but I don't see why it shouldn't manage that.

After 30 years in this business, you shouldn't need to buy another expensive recording device to use what the camera itself claims to offer. I think it's time for a class action law suit? Is there one? They have thme for lying auto makers all day long etc. Been using all canon pro gear for these past 30 years. I even have the atomos accessories. But when I want to run lite, fast and just use a Ronin RS3 hand held. The camera should simply record. At the very least for more than 20-30 min and that's not even contestant recording. I'm over it. Not sure I understand or follow. If you need a flash you need to buy a flash, as that is an accessory that is optional. External recording isn't something that is needed, but that is an accessory that many video users prefer. It's an optional accessory, not something that is required to use the camera. The 30min recording limit is not a Canon issue, it's an old EU tax rule that divided video / broadcast from photo camera, but that's removed. That's also why new cameras comes without 30min limit

I was not actually. Wow, I would never buy anything like that. I just researched it. Not sure that will stick. Especially in this economy. The greed is catching up to people. I'm sure there are some that can get around it (love those guys). I don't do car payments or debt if possible. That's just me. I also don't ever buy a new car off the lot. It's the biggest waste of money many know of. One of the wealthiest men I know has been driving the same old, but nicely kept beamer for like 15 years now. He bought it used for 17k. Sorry. It seems that it is not the combination of the individual recipes that made it. This would be mysterious. It appears to be the fact that you removed the second sd card in the last test. So it would probably be the internal coding to H265 that generates heat.

If your record on an external device (i.e Atomos Ninja V) in clean HDMI, it disables internal recording, no matter if you have 1, 2 or none SD cards in. So no internal (H265) coding is performed, explaining IMO why it does not heat.@@persvanstrom

I feel you, even if I don't agree :) I think expectations are important and an R6 or R5 is a hybrid mirrorless camera and with that, expectations should be it is a photography masterpiece that also can film. It's not a cinema camera that can film for a full day, multiple codecs and no problems. For 2100 USD I personally believe it's a steal. With that said, I'm not saying you are wrong, just that different people will have different perspectives, and you are 100% right from your perspective as I am from mine. Most negative comments I read about the R6 and equal cameras are the lack of long use of 4K recording in 60fps. With a legal stop of 29min, we should not expect anything but burst video video usages imho. If the need is mostly video I would recommend a cinema camera or even two cameras. Still I feel with anyone dissapointed and I think it's entitled, but also hard. I don't expect my regular car to be able to do heavy off-road, but I would be dissapointed if I can't park it on grass. If that makes sense.

You shot in CanonLog3 for the final video (Your 5+ hours of recording). I watched this video, made the decision to get the Canon R6, the Ninja V, dummy battery...same setup right. CanonLog3 same result i.e. As long as I wanted AND as long as the display was off. Shooting in standard...30min. This camera is junk. You changed the parameters (settings) of the test on purpose and didn't mention it. I regret the purchase. But, I did learn a valuable lesson...don't listen to salesman on KZfaq. It's just a commercial. Some guys are just untrustworthy. But, don't take it personally, Same goes for guitar pedals, guitars, plates, dishes, rain coats, jackets, bags, shoes, computers, hard drives, games, fans, humidifiers, curtains, tires, cars, phones, trackpads, external hard drives, etc. I could go on forever. But, maybe you'll get a sponsor soon...you know...the goal
@persvanstrom
@persvanstrom 7 ай бұрын
I pay my own gear, so not sure about the commercial reference, but if you only get 30min, then you are still recording internally. The camera is locked to 30min, no matter what. Only way to bypass 30min hard recording limit, that isn't related to overheat, but just a hard block on most cameras, then you need to record externally. My problem with external recording and the reason for the video was that even if I recorded externally, I still got overheats. That should be gone with my suggested solution. If you hit record on the camera, it will be internal + external. If you hit record on Ninja, it will be only external and no 30min hard limit. Check this and if still not working, poke me and we can sort it together as I'm not hear to sell shit, I'm here, trying my best to share my experiences learned by countless of hundred of hours shooting, with the hope that it will help someone else.

Plus, I said some youtubers. If that offends you, that's your problem. Your results of 5hr+ is a result of external recording and putting the R6 in CLog3. That's it. @@persvanstrom OK. Let's say I do not want to shoot in CLog3. I want to point and shoot, record to the Ninja V in 4k60fps. The camera is set the same. Not Clog3 but a standard profile in camera. Dummy battery, screen open. I get sometimes 30min sometimes less. But, when I change to Clog3 in camera, rec709 monitoring, I get 5+ hours. That is all I am saying. I can never duplicate the 5 hrs in a standard camera profile, native monitoring. Eco off. Maybe, their is a setting i'm missing that you have set that's probably simple, but the frustration is across the board on this camera. For me, even with the external monitoring, it is not worth it. I don't blame you for my purchase, and I really do appreciate the videos (doesn't seem like it I know) but when I've tried for the last 8 months to duplicate your results, I can not. So, I bought the camera and the external monitor and external battery and all the external rig to make this a point and shoot camera without having to use clog3, I should be able to and get the 5+hrs. My point is, without CLOG3...you will not get 5+hrs. That is the whole point. Nothing else. I know you are in CLOG3. Some people don't like to use CLog anything, just a standard profile.
