Had to regrease the helicoid on this one after having already CLA'd due my normal grease being a bit too heavy. So figured id film it. Here is the video I referenced initially

Thank you! This video saved me a few hundred $ in repair costs by just doing it myself, ended up being an incredibly easy fix.

I have this lens and luckily mine is in excellent condition.I would not dare take this apart myself though.

Thanks for making this video. I just received a chrome nose FD 1.2/55 with aperture fully open and completely unresponsive to the aperture ring. Planning to shoot mostly wide open anyway, but it would be nice to stop down on occasion. Hopefully its takedown and repair isn't too crazy. I'm hoping it's just a dirty spring or blades in need of an acetone rinse.

Are you absolutely positive that it's stuck open? Have you tried it while it is fully mounted on an FD mounted cam or an appropriate adapter with the aperture mechanism engaged? Is the mount seated correctly? Although it is possible that it is stuck, that is extremely rare. I would explore the possibility that it just isn't mounted or seated correctly first before disassembly

@@averykevans6894 thanks for the reply and thoughts. I had the same suspicion and mounted it to my FD-FX speed booster, but it stayed unresponsive. I haven't tried it on any of my other FD adapters, but I will tomorrow. I've manually fiddled with the controls in back a lot to try to get a response, but still nothing happened. I'll observe how my FD 50/1.4 responds and try to draw analogies. I'll take a video and post it tomorrow, too. I agree, it seems odd. I've seen this on M42 lenses, but never a Canon.

Thank you for the instructions, Avery. By any chance, do you know of any cleaning solutions that can be used on FD/nFD glass? Zeiss lens wipes perhaps? I'm looking for something easy to use that won't scratch the glass/leave residue or damage/remove the coatings. If you have any recommendations, let me know. Thanks!

Hey hey my pleasure! I use Pancro spray (expensive but worth it) and I use a brand of cellulose based wipes called AAwipes. Both of them can be purchased on Amazon. Zeiss wipes are convenient but have some issues so I don't use them on internal surfaces ever. Pancro is super clean although a bit pricey it's worth it.

I liked your vid and it really help me a lot. I have a nFD 200mm f2.8 and there are lots of fungus inside. I am having problem unscrewing the 3 little screws on the barrel lens. It is a JIS screwdriver for sure but it is not the #00. Could you please inform me the type and size of screwdriver to open those 3 little screws on the barrel of the New FD 200mm f2.8. Appreciate if you can help me. Thanks

I cannot get the middle ring that hold the element out. Tried acetone a few time and alcohol. Even heat from a hair dryer, still extremely stuck. Any suggestions?

Patience. Let it sit apply some more solvent. Let it sit. Repeat. It will eventually give in. Unless you have damaged it somehow. If the threads get damaged than you're SOL

Could you let me know the slotted screwdriver you were using to get the slotted screws in the back? I tried but the tip of my screwdriver is too thick to get into the slot of the screw to actually turn it. Thanks in advance!

I use JIS screwdrivers. You can pick up a set on Amazon for $20ish -- the one I'm using in the video comes from Simmod lens
