Many of us choose third party lenses to pair with our cameras instead of native glass. This can save a lot of money. But sometimes it's a MISTAKE. Sometimes the very thing you want the lens to do doesn't work. The Sigma 150-600 Contemporary Lens is NOT fully compatible with the Canon EOS R5. Find out why before you buy.

So it looks like the issues I identify here also apply to other 3rd party long telephoto zooms, including Tamron lenses of the same vintage. Same pulsing behaviour on servo autofocus with eye detection. And as of Jul 30/22, the same issues have also been seen with older Canon EF mount lenses used with R series cameras.

Thanks. As Duade notes, the recommended settings for the Sigma lens do not eliminate the problem - they only reduce it. And as I've mentioned previously, the decision to use this lens is a balance of the need for an inexpensive option and quality good enough for most situations vs. higher cost and better performance/reliability. Each of us will make the choice right for us.

@@OldGirlPhotography i got this lens for 650. I mainly try using it for still photography and getting more interesting angles to your typical low angle shots. I also found it useful for getting high megapixel photos through a series of shots into one large image. Due to me mainly using it in around city's, is indeed frustrating the amount of hate most private places have to telephoto photographers such as themeparks and sporting events. I did manage to walk in with it in universal orlando and got a really good close up of a dragon spitting fire in one of the Harry Potter lands.

Thank you for the information you shared. This helped me make my decision between the Sigma 150-600mm and the Canon RF 100-400 (budget-friendlier version). I was leaning more towards the Sigma at first but after watching another video plus yours regarding the pulsing. That was what helped me make my decision. I have to agree the RF 100-500mm is very attractive but comes at a price tag too. Everything you said makes sense to me especially when it came to subject of fitting an older tech (EF) with a newer tech (Canon R).

So I responded to this vid 6 months ago, when I too was having LOTS of focus pulsing issues with my R5 + the Sigma 150-600. Then, literally as I was waiting for my new RF 800 F11 to be shipped, I watched a video by Duade Paton with Simon Thibodaux, with a semi-fix for the focus pulsing issue. I followed all the steps, and tested it like 1 afternoon. Seemed to work very well.... But the next day, my RF 800 came in, and I started killing it with this lens, and could hardly force myself to take it off. Recently, I've started thoroughly testing the R5 + 150-600, and confirmed that it is working MUCH better. Now I want to buy an R7 for a backup to my R5. One great thing, is that on a crop sensor camera, the Sigma 150-600 will be = to 240-960mm ! Perfect for nearly all my bird photography. Just not sure how well the focus pulsing fix will work for the Sigma with the R7 ? Have you since tried the focus pulsing fix suggested by Duade Paton and Simon T ?
@OldGirlPhotography
@OldGirlPhotography Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you are finding a solution that works for you. You may notice the pulsing even more with the higher "magnification" factor of the crop sensor on the R7, but that's just a guess on my part - I've never tried that combination. Duade Paton did a review of that combination about 6 months ago and confirmed the pulsing. He opens his video by saying that Sigma advises the lens is not compatible with the servo autofocus on the Canon mirrorless line. He still got usable shots, but not consistently. You can try adjusting the settings as some suggest, but that's more than I'm interested in doing. I can't put the link in here, but you can find it easily.

I already had the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary which I have been using successfully on my 5DsR so I was dismayed by reading all of the reports about problems with using it on the R series especially as I had to wait several months for my R7 to finally be delivered having traded in my Panasonic G9 and PL100-400mm lens against it on the strength of being able to utilise my EF lenses with it. However, I have been very pleasantly surprised and have found the Sigma to be be working more than acceptably well on my R7 with a very high percentage of sharp bird (including eye detect autofocus) and small fast very distant military aircraft in sharp focus. I bought the RF 100-400mm for a light walk around lens, and my only native RF lens, and that is great and fantastic value for money but I still keep going back to the Sigma for the extra reach especially as the RF 100-500mm is outside my budget.

First of all, I would like to say what a pleasure it was to catch your video, and it was lovely to hear a Canadian accent again! I lived in Hamilton, ON, for about 6 years before moving to Victoria, BC. I now live in Auckland, New Zealand. I started my professional career in 1980, but am now retired, so I have quite a few things in common with you. My preferred genres are wildlife, scenic and travel, but I have also shot architecture, portraits, commercial and industrial stuff. In NZ, birds are the dominant wildlife form, so my experiences are very much couched with shooting them. So, to your experience... I do understand your frustration with challenges using third-party lenses. I got the R5 and a couple of R6 units about 20 months ago along with the 100-500, 24-105 L units, and the 24-240 (which, by the way, is a surprisingly good all-rounder!). However, in my fairly vast array of legacy gear I have the Sigma 150-600c and 60-600s lenses, and I tried them on my R5 and R6 units via the Canon basic EF-RF adapter. To be honest I had no issues unless I was shooting close to minimum focusing distance - an experience echoed by respected Australian bird photographer Duade Paton in one of his videos on the subject. I have not checked your settings at the time of responding, but there may be some subtle difference in how we have our units set up. One thing of note is that Canon have released a long series of firmware updates for the R6 and R5 to fix issues with tracking and focus that are apparent even for their own lenses, and the current one at this time is 1.6.0. I have been diligent in keeping up with those as the results have been significant. FWIW, I was getting fairly reliable focus tracking from f/w version 1.5.2 onwards on all lenses: including both of the Sigma lenses, but I was staying away from shots at closest distance, as I had other bodies and lenses to switch to for that. I think all telephoto lenses are challenged there. I don't post on the web, and one can't seem to post links to comments, so I shall have to leave it at that. As to responsibility... As you say, Sigma did announce that their lenses were not designed to be compatible with the R-series bodies and Canon have (as always) been clear they take no responsibility for 3rd party gear, and for their own legacy lenses they have published a list of units that work best with both tracking and IBIS. In the end it is, as always, a case of caveat emptor, and doing the research oneself. Part of that is keeping up with firmware updates from both lens and camera makers, which is a bit of a labour of love!

Hi Trevor. I must say that this is the most comprehensive comment I have ever received and I have absolutely nothing to add, lol. I will say though that I rarely (never?) shoot at the closest focus distance. And I always keep my firmware for both camera and lenses up to date. Thank you so much for these thoughts. I would love someday to visit that part of the world. We shall see.

I need to take a closer look. I use my Sigma 150-600C with my R5 and haven't noticed such issue. @OldGirlPhotography
@OldGirlPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Pedro. The issue really appears when using Servo (continuous) autofocus with eye detection active. If you are using single point or area and not using eye detection, you won't experience the problem. Also, you didn't say whether you were using Servo mode. If you are using One Shot, you also won't see the problem.
@hdlplayer
@hdlplayer 2 жыл бұрын
@@OldGirlPhotography I always use Servo mode with BBF. I use regular focusing mode to "select the bird" I want before switching to the eye mode. If I go to eye focus initially in a group of birds (on land or flying) the camera will go nut picking a bird and usually not the one I want. That happens with all lenses, not just the Sigma.
@OldGirlPhotography
@OldGirlPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
@@hdlplayer Thanks, Pedro. I don't usually shoot in flocks of birds, but I understand what you are saying. My issue is different. With SINGLE birds in motion, and using eye detection and servo autofocus, where eye detection locks on to the bird consistently, the photos are mostly out of focus because the lens hunts. This is an acknowledged issue by Sigma.

Thanks for the note. Some people have found the RF 100-400, with a 1.4 extender, to be reasonable compromise, even though it would take you up to f/11 at the long end. Most new R series cameras perform well in low light, so surprisingly, that aperture has not been as much of an issue as thought. And there continue to be rumors that Canon will release a more price-friendly long zoom soon. I love my RF 100-500, because of all of its features, including weight. Performance was not the sole consideration.

Unfortunately, this problem seems to be universal with Canon RF cameras. They are amazing pieces of technology but Canon's refusal to allow 3rd party lens manufacturers access to their software specs suggests wonderful new and innovative lenses won't be available to RF mount users any time soon. This appears to me as a cash grab by Canon forcing RF users to purchase RF lenses. You were effectively forced to purchase a very good lens, Canon 100-500 but at a Canadian price at $3,800 + tax = $4,300 in Ontario. Your Sigma 150 - 600 will work perfectly on any Sony body at 1/3 fo that price. That same Sony body would also work well with your Tamron lenses and most other 3rd party lenses. Last year I took my first major step into photography and was forced to make that all important decision, which platform do I purchase. My brother and sister-in-law are a huge Canon supporters with meaningful investments in bodies and lenses and both encouraged me to buy Sony simply for the availability of lens choice and compatibility. There is no doubt the Canon R5 is an amazing camera. but sadly, Canon's corporate policies regarding lenses encouraged me to look elsewhere.
@OldGirlPhotography

Thanks for the comment. If I were starting out today, as you were, I honestly don't know which way I would go. I also don't know if Sony had similar policies to Canon when it first entered the mirrorless domain or whether it has always been welcoming of third party options. Fuji is the only other system I have tried and, like Canon, they did not (do not?) open their doors to third parties. So my only experience with third party lenses has been with lenses that were either missing features altogether or where those features performed at much lower levels than native glass. So I guess I'm a bit jaded.

Interesting. The pulsing does not happen all the time - only in certain situations. It seems strange that Sigma might built improvements into "newer" copies of this same lens - that's not typically how things happen. Instead, manufacturers release a new labelled version of the lens - version 2 - if they were planning on making any improvements. That has not happened with this lens. I'd be curious to see if you say the same thing a year from now once you have used it more.

But ti me, it never seemed a hardware issue. I was also using it with an old dslr, (1200D), and was seeing extremely high levels of pulsing. With the mirrorless bodies however. No such issue. This seems like a firmware update, which gets added into hardware before dispatch, in case of updates. Seems to have been a problem with the "intelligence" of the lens, rather than the focus motors.
@OldGirlPhotography
@OldGirlPhotography 9 ай бұрын
@@indiantwistr8036 Logically, I can't think of why this pulsing behaviour might have changed. Canon has no incentive to "fix" an issue with a third party lens, even if that fix is a simple firmware update in the camera. And Sigma had not released (at least up until the time I owned this lens) any firmware updates for the lens to correct the problem. I kept checking up until the day I sold it. It's possible that they have done something since then, but then why not publish it/announce it. I think it's more likely that you and I are/were just using the lens in different situations. Update: I just checked the Sigma website and there have been no firmware updates for this lens since 2019. So a lens update is not the answer.

I get pulsing with my 16mm RF sometimes. I also don't seem to have great luck with the eye detect, and now I wonder if it's because the two lenses I use the most are the EF 50mm 1.8 and the EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS USM from like '95. Sometimes it works great, sometimes it'll focus on a hand instead of an obvious face. Many times it doesn't focus on the subject I wanted if there is other stuff in the frame. Maybe upgrading my glass, whenever I can afford it, will help. I was considering this lens for the eclipse.

You were considering the Sigma lens for the eclipse? If I might recommend the RF 100-400 instead, you might be happier with the result. I would not go beyond 500mm for eclipse shooting. Too hard to keep the sun in the frame (remember the Earth rotates), and you will miss the corona at totality with a longer lens. The corona can extend 3-10 times wider than the solar disk, depending on your settings.

The RF 100-500 is a great lens, but it's nearly $4300 CAD now with tax. That is an enormous investment for hobbiests who just want a good value lens. But a bit limited in focal length for bird photography. But my extender x 1.4 helps me in a good light situation. Your RF100-500 is the best fit for your R5. I project to do the same.

I'm a beginner and tried to match up a older Canon EF mount lens on a newer Rebel t8i. I found a couple Canon lenses that are slow to focus and another that is not only slow buts hunts... I have since replaced the lenses with brand new equipment that delivers the results I expected. Thank you for your experience, because it confirms my opinion and conclusions.

Great video. I have the Sigma lens also, and purchased it for the same reason most people do. I am still using a T5i and 6D camera bodies and have debated about an R6. That alone can break the bank( I retired in 2019 so I know the financial burdens too😁). This was good information for me. I’m not sure that switching bodies would be advantageous because of the enormous expense of the new Canon RF lenses. I’ve been a photographer for fifty years, thirty of them working at a photo college. It is sad to see costs going so much higher on new gear.
@OldGirlPhotography

It's true - in comparison to historical prices, the prices on the new gear are disproportionately higher. But so is what you get for the cost. All you have to do is put the manuals side by side. I have never had so many features, functions and options. I'm just getting ready for the spring shooting season and reconfigured my camera from scratch to give me even better performance (assigning custom buttons, creating presets, etc.). I don't have 50 years of experience to draw on, so some of the technology is coming in pretty handy for me. The amount of information I have on my screen is mind-boggling. Like the heads-up display in a fighter jet. I am ready to go! But I fully respect what you are saying - there are many ways to achieve the same objective - great shots.

The true cost of gear isn't the list price, it's the difference between what you actually pay, and what you sell it for. I usually shop around eBay, find out what the going price is, try to shave a few percent off that, take the time and buy one cheap. Then take care of it, and later sell it just a few percent higher than the going rate. Take the cheapest shipping option, not fastest, etc. etc. Canon's development and replacement speed is going to be at least 2-5x slower (sales are 90% lower than the peak years for SLR equipment, thanks to cell phones) so stuff bought now will be current far longer than before. And while 1990s (or earlier) gear usually had shortcomings you could see even in casual friends-and-family photos, today's gear is honestly simply better than almost anyone needs. The 100-500 can actually resolve more detail on the R5 than excellent EF primes so I think the age of constant upgrading of lenses is behind us for a while.
@OldGirlPhotography
@OldGirlPhotography Жыл бұрын
Good strategy. Like all things, the trade-off is what makes this work. You are willing to invest the time, do the research, and, likely, haggle over price. I do check out the used gear market, but don't have the same patience as you to find both the right purchase price and the right sale price afterward. I also tend to deal with personal friends more than strangers when buying or selling used, so that shaves some of the effort off. I do applaud your approach though.

@OldGirlPhotography
@OldGirlPhotography Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. If you mean the RF 800, f/11, then each of your choices has pros and cons and you will need to weigh those pros and cons and decide what is more important to you. The RF lens will work seamlessly with your camera, but it is f/11 and it is a fixed focal length (no zoom). The Tamron lens requires an adapter, is older, and will likely exhibit some limitations with autofocus and tracking. It is also much heavier. But it has a nice zoom range for wildlife. So, you need to decide which of these limitations is more important and base your choice on that. You may also want to consider the RF 100-400 lens and add a 1.4 or 2x extender. Lots of people I know are doing that and are very happy with that combination. The best lens, if you wish to save for it, is the RF 100-500. It is super fast, super sharp and lighter than other similar lenses. And it is a beautiful match for your R6.

@@OldGirlPhotography Thank you for your reply! What do you lose when adding a teleconverter?
@OldGirlPhotography
@OldGirlPhotography Жыл бұрын
@@lindabonskowski7165 There are two teleconverters available - 1.4x and 2x. With the 1.4, you lose 1 stop of light, meaning you need to adjust settings to be one stop brighter. With the 2x teleconverter, you lose 2 stops of light. The widest aperture on the 100-400 is f/5.6. This means you would start at f/7.1 or f/8 when using the teleconverter, depending on which teleconverter you choose. If you are outside during the day, this won't affect your images. If you are in a dark woodland or indoors, it might make a difference. Unfortunately not. The firmware for the lens has not had a real update from Sigma since prior to the issue of the R5. I know - I tried that. @@OldGirlPhotography Good points. I agree with you. I also find it frustrating, but we're in Canon's hands. They get to decide what works and doesn't, especially when it comes to 3rd-party. Look at MagicLantern as another example. It unlocks so much goodies out of the box that canon doesn't provide. Overall the Sigma C seems to win the features/cost vs the Canon 100-400 II, even with the pulsing. I own both and use each for different reasons. If you can find the Canon second-hand, it helps with the price and narrows the competition. Still I agree the pulsing shouldn't happen but glad there's something that can be done, even if it's not convenient. Can the AF settings be saved to a profile? That way you can load up whichever profile you need before you begin.

@@OpenFilmmaker Thanks. The lens settings set through the Sigma dock could be saved to a custom Sigma profile that you can select through the C1-C3 buttons on the lens, and it is possible to save the custom camera settings to a in-camera custom profile, but that would use up one of the three custom slots on my R5 and I would rather reserve them for more useful purposes, such as burst shooting settings or time-lapse settings. So technically yes, it is possible. Lots of effort to make it work though. Too much for my taste.

Thanks for the question. Haven't tried that lens, but as a newer model lens, it will likely have some improvements in the motors that drive the autofocus system. It is, however, still an EF mount lens, so won't pair perfectly with the RF mount electronics. Until Canon authorizes third party lens makers for the full RF mount, there will still likely be some compatibility challenges. Even when third parties are authorized, there may still be some restrictions. We see that with Nikon and Sony and how they interact with third parties.

@@OldGirlPhotography In relation to EF mount electronics, the new 1200mm F/8 and 800mm F/5.6 are essentially EF versions with a built-in EF-EOSR adapter. My friend tested the Sigma 60-600 alongside the RF 100-500, and the autofocus speed was faster on the Sigma due to the availability of more light. Additionally, the Sigma produces better bokeh. Consequently, he opted for the Sigma. Currently, I'm in search of a decent telephoto lens for the R5, and my choices are either Sigma or the second hand EF 200-400mm f/4 L. If you do plan to upgrade to a full frame camera eventually, then investing in a full-frame lens might be a good choice. However, Sigma has confirmed that the 150-600 does not work perfectly with the R series cameras from Canon. Autofocus and tracking do not perform very well in some situations. Sigma lenses do not work well with Canon or Nikon mirrorless. They work better on Sony, because the MC-11 adapter made by Sigma back in 2016 uses the protocols licensed directly from Sony. On a separate note, Canon is now banning third-party lens manufacturers to make RF mount autofocus lenses. Hence, for photographers who are only willing to shoot with Canon cameras, they will have to buy lenses from only Canon and not from Tamron/Sigma.

Many of us have invested in EF glass well before the release of the R5 and did not want to switch it out immediately. the sigma 150-600mm contemporary is my dream lens for my canon 6d. i'm going to college and would love to take pics of the sporting events. it's quite heavy & i'd also want a monopod, so i'm looking at about a grand investment 😅 i'm fully manual so i dont worry about anything but lens sharpness and barrel durability. eventually would like a sigma 16-25mm f1.8 art lens for indoor photography. for now, my canon 24-105mm & 85mm f1.8 both work for my budget. i appreciate this video! sorry it didn't work as intended :(

Thanks so much. The lens will work wonderfully with the 6D. It was designed for that generation of camera. And you have a plan for how to use it. Sounds perfect. All the best.

@@OldGirlPhotography i enjoy hearing about your experiences with equipment & the learning process. i used to not care about the weight of my gear, but after carrying a camera, long lens, and a grip with two batteries, it hurt my neck & my arms were sore!

@@OldGirlPhotography my 24-105mm isnt super heavy, but if i get anything larger i'll definitely get a monopod too. i hate using them, but i cannot hold a camera & lens that weighs like 6 pounds for hours on end.

fortune lined up and i got this lens for $600 from a fellow student. attached to the 6d it is heavy, and i grew tired quickly, but it's gorgeous. sad it didnt work out for you, but i definitely see the weight issue. thanks for sharing!

A lens is optics and a focus motor. The camera is steering everything. Eye detect is not a lens feature, it is a camera feature. So, blaming the Sigma does not help. It is the Camera which does not work properly. I use the Sigma on a Nikon and it works perfectly in all modes. So do not draw conclusions about the "cheap" lens. The lens is fine. Canon just want to sell you overpriced lenses.

Respectfully I disagree. They are partners in the equation. I wasn't commenting on eye detect but rather on the ability of the lens to grab and maintain focus. I also wasn't blaming anyone, but rather commenting on the issues you could encounter when mating up an older lens with a newer camera body. The lens is not fine in this combination. It is undoubtedly completely fine in other combinations, as you note.

@@OldGirlPhotography Sure. Replace "eye detect" with "focussing" and the message is still true. In regard of "mating" an older lens to a newer body ... it is still the camera and the lens adapter who are in charge. The only area in which the lens acts more independent is the vibration reduction.

Yeah, just get rid of the Sigma lens and get the proper Canon lens.

I keep telling people not to buy the Sigma.. but so many still do...and always end up being disappointed. On the other hand the RF 100-500 rocks!

Thanks for the comment. Sadly, many of us invested in Sigma glass well before mirrorless cameras and electronics were the norm they are today. These lenses work well with standard DSLR's, which just means their lifespan is coming to a close, along with those cameras.

@@OldGirlPhotography I didn't find that they worked very well on DSLR cameras either. There were numerous front/back focus issues. Reverse engineering Canon's autofocus algorithms isn't an easy thing to do.

@@justinholding02 Interesting. I never thought I had any issues with this lens and my old DSLR. But I didn't do a lot of tracking of moving subjects either at that time. Keeper rate was low in those situations, but assumed it was me. Maybe it wasn't.
