Hey Brett, just wanted to say thanks for a great video! I’m late to the party on mirrorless (in fact DHL are literally on the way with my R5, 100-500 L, and other bits & pieces) but it was really good to hear the perspective of a pro. I shoot wildlife, but 99% of what you said is equally applicable.

I totally agree with you on the electronic viewfinder versus optical. After my first race shooting with the R5, I was gaining a lot of comfort shooting with it and, with motorsports being fairly linear and typically predictable movements, I was able to get around my complaints with the EVF. I left that race and sold my 1DX Mark II as I realized it was time to just go all in with this system. I caught a 65+ image major wreck sequence with every single image in focus and in the frame and no buffer issues. My brief period of time with the EVF and I was able to achieve that - very happy photographer. I now have an R6 with my R5 and am even considering a second R5 but will probably wait for the "R1" or whatever comes next. But seriously. Shooting sports with 45mp!? I still can't believe what I can do with that kind of power. LOL I've never been so impressed with a camera overall. I remember the first time I motor-drived a 1DX and giggled like a child, but this camera surpasses that. It constantly impresses me and I always have confidence that I can photograph anything in any situation with a very small camera.

I just picked up two R5s today, went looking for some neat tricks and everything I found was, who knew, Videos about Video usage. I´m a photographer though and I mainly do news/newswire stuff, with editorial, reportage & portraits a close second. Third is probably Sports - mostly German Bundesliga Soccer or Ski Jumping. I had a 1D3 and 1D4 at one point, but found them too large for my kind of work at that time. I still own the 1D3 and it is huge in comparison. So up until yesterday, I was on a 5D3 and 5D4 which obviously dont really cut it for Soccer. As you said, better AF and the ability to crop are a big plus. More fps are also nice. Thanks for the good review, it kinda confirmed the impression I had when I tried the R5 a few weeks back. I do hope though that the evf lag does not prove to be a disappointment. Otherwise it´ll be just spray and pray.

Hi Brett, hello from Paris! It is really a pleasure to watch your videos as you are so friendly and enthusiastic. I used to shoot with a 5Dii for 11 years. It was my first full frame body and I was absolutely amazed, as if I was rediscovering photograpy. And even if the AF was not fantastic, I was able to shoot birds and even planes during air meetings, having beautiful results using central collimator. This new body is a revolution for me! The AF is just from another world compared with my old 5Dii. I can now use my 135 F2 and have almost 100% correct focus. On my 5Dii, it was almost impossible to use at F2 (for me!). The eye detection left me speechless. Also, the power of ISO is insane. You can shoot with so high iso that I understand now how Canon dared to sell 800 mm F/11 !!! In fact, it makes sense with this body! I'm a bit worried about the electronic view for birds and planes and still prefer the view in a mirror system. When lockdown is over, maybe I can finally try it properly. RF lenses seems amazing, but price is amazing too (whish I could buy this RF 85 1.2!!!!). Nice vid!

Thank you so much for the kind words and input. Couldn’t agree more with you on all those points. I love that a camera can give new life to lenses, like the 135 or 85 primes and make them even more accurate. RF lenses are pretty pricey, I can vouch for the ones I have tried as being absolutely incredible though. I’m sure we will see a wider range of prices as things go on but I’m glad the new ones are absolutely incredible in quality even if at a higher price. Thank you again!

I had it "overheat" in the original firmware in Photo mode, no videos taken. But i was shooting bursts of photos in Electronic shutter, over and over. However it was only 65F outside and 10+ MPH winds. So then when I wanted to take a video, I was blocked out. But maybe it's fixed now/not an issue in latest firmware.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
Well if you went to take 4K 120 or 4K HQ, 8K Raw etc. then your usage in photo mode will raise the heat level and possibly make that impossible. But photo mode won’t be affected. Sorry if that was unclear, or maybe I’m reading it wrong haha. Has the new firmware helped? I was cranking on mine in like 90+ degree weather at a golf tournament and it never affected my stills usage. Bet it wasn’t able to shoot high res video though haha

Have you tried the electronic shutter? It blew me away. No shutter lag and it took 3-5 pictures when I thought I only captured one frame. With fast action sports you may be concerned with rolling shutter distortion, but it seems to happen very rarely. For nature photography it’s wonderful, because the shutter is silent. My 1DxII is super fast, but is pretty loud and animals notice it. The R5 has way more pixels, is totally quiet and faster, up to 20fps! The R1 will be mind blowing, I’m guessing... but super expensive. Those RF lenses are amazing but the 600mm will probably be around 20K?
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t use it much because where I’d gain the most advantage is sports and then the rolling shutter is a factor. Only time will tell but yeah, could be looking at a BMW or a super telephoto haha. Luckily the EF works perfectly on the R bodies so there will be levels etc to it with the used market.

Excellent review. How would you compare R5 against 1DX mark III? Is it like comparing apples to oranges? Different use scenarios?
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
Precisely. Very difficult to compare. 1DX Mark III is better for peak action, better at high iso, more durable and rugged and obviously all the other features. R5 files are way more detailed as they are 45 megapixels, it’s lighter and smaller (or can be), still great in most isos I commonly use and does an OK job with sports etc. which makes it really impressive still. But yes you hit the nail on the head. If you’re shooting action and sports etc. more than anything else I’d go 1DX mark III. If you don’t, then the R5 offers a lower price and much higher resolution files which are beautiful.

Hey Brett. An opportunity to get an R5 has come up. I shoot high school sports (5DIV) in iffy lighting. When shooting I usually have antiflicker control turned on. On the 5DIV there is little to no noticeable difference in burst speed when antiflicker is engaged. But it looks like the R5 manual says burst speeds get down to 4.9fps when anti flicker is turned on. Have you experienced a dramatic shift in fps burst when needing to turn on anti flicker? That's the only thing stopping me. Knowing that in most situations I will need to have antiflicker turned on which can cause my burst to suffer. However with that said, if those 4.9fps are all sharp I can certainly live with that, you know?
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
Ah that makes sense to me. I personally haven’t used anti flicker. Is it supposed to slow down in any lighting conditions or just when it detects flickering? I ask because if it’s in any condition I can try it on mine for you. Would be a bummer to be at 4.9fps but like you said 5 mint frames is better than 12 weird ones haha
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 3 жыл бұрын
@@BrettCarlsen Correct. The high school lights where I shoot are older so with it OFF I get uneven exposure and when I have anti-flicker turned ON it pauses the shutter to match the oscillation of the lights. On the EOS R FPS goes down to 3 (From 5) and on the 5DIV it goes down to 6.5 (from 7). But on the R5 the documentation says it goes down to 4.9 (from 12 or 9 depending drive + or no drive + shooting). Its an astronomical drop in my opinion. You can test it on your lights at home as well (usually) but yeah...that's probably the only thing that's stopping me from taking the full plunge into the R system. I almost want to keep my 5DIV and stay in the EF world as its doing exactly what I want. But I also have been building my R Lens kit in the background and I'm eager to make the switch. But it seems like I may have to continue to wait.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
Can completely relate. I love my optical viewfinder so I’m clutching on with dear life to that. Love this r5 and RF glass too though. So I just put mine into anti flicker at 12 fps. The warning dictates shutter lag will be longer and FPS may drop. So I fired off a burst in sunlight and it didn’t drop at all. Went towards my worst bulb in my house and it also stayed high but think the flicker isn’t bad enough to trigger the anti flicker. Not that useful but I guess to say the anti flicker doesn’t automatically dump you to 4.9 FPS just by turning it on.

What I've had problems with is using my 1Dx and having my R5 as a second camera. Going from optical to that EVF really messes with my timing. Totally agree with your assessment of the kit. My other issue, although limited is I wish Canon had decided to allow the ES to at least be capable of at least 1/6000 sec. My A9 buddies are killing me with some creative slower/quiet sports moments shooting wide open at mid-day. Do have any guesses on why Canon has chosen that option? Even though I shoot mechanical 99.9% of the time it would be fun to have that capability
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t have any insight other than guessing. But I’d assume it’s just a balance of cost/performance. It’s not a sports centric body so I guess having full speed electronic shutter probably wasn’t a primary focus. I know personally I didn’t plan on being able to shoot sports at all on this camera. I say this because the Rest of Sony’s lineup (in told) also would have the same issue the R5 has with rolling shutter. I’d assume a much more expensive processor is needed to read the whole sensor simultaneously as opposed to reading down the sensor which is what’s happening for us. The mechanical is so quiet I really have lost 0 sleep even shooting a bit of quiet stuff on sets with mechanical on. And I still have electronic for those uses as no one is moving fast. But I hope the sports version does have better performance on the sports side of things.

Both are awesome. And both operate very similarly other than resolution. For my needs the 45 was important. First things first. Great review. No nonsense, or 20 minutes of video using the camera which proves nothing whatsoever. A couple things that are driving me nuts about this camera; the viewfinder/LCD options stink. And what's with the permanently fixed eyepiece? I have the 800mm 5.6 prime and focus is quicker than my 5D MK IV. Unfortunately I'm only able to achieve approximately 7 FPS mechanical rather than the advertised 12. I suspect this is a communication issue. It wasn't a deal breaker as I knew this prior to purchase. Still, the 800 was Canon's flagship super-tele. You'd think they could sort this out. (Subscribed)

Thank you so much. Seriously making these feels very thankless so I appreciate kind and constructive comments a lot. I want them to allow me to use the viewfinder and keep the screen off until I hit the play button. Would you agree? switching it is a nightmare in rain (with rain gear) and leaving it on auto is generally great for me but sometimes annoying seeing as I don't need the LCD except to review photos or use the menu. It is very interesting about the shooting speed. Personally I was shocked at how much this camera cranked when I opened it up (fast). Have you been certain you are in Continuous + and also have fully charged batteries? (trying to think of other options that might be affecting it but those are the certain first two)

@@BrettCarlsen I want that LCD to remain off until I want to review a photo or make a menu change. Having to flip the screen open to do these things is annoying as hell. And forget about making menu changes while looking through the viewfinder. It's OK for reviewing a shot here and there but that's all.,,,,,, I've met all the parameters for H+ shooting and it just won't achieve 12 FPS. It'll do 20 in Electronic shutter but that's problematic for certain subjects. No camera is perfect but this one *is* remarkable.

How do u shoot Olympics ?

That is extremely difficult if not impossible. You’d have to be one of the best sports photographers in the world and then also have a good long term relationship with a client that has the ability to bring a still photographer. It is one of the most complex events in the world to be credentialed for.

I have yet to photograph the Olympics. I have filmed for a network at them. Still a one in a million shot. I am not. I’m freelance fit many clients. I have not been approached to go to the 2021 Olympics.

Yeah. It’s a inovativ production cart. Best I got with the space I have to make these in haha. May have to get some saw horses and make a makeshift table like I used to in the college studios.
