Canon R50 Lens Tests - low light and challenging conditions
• CANON R50 | Lens and V...
I've been wanting to challenge my skills with the new Canon R50 and try out these lenses for this great camera.
All I can say is I'm impressed with the results and these lenses performed admirably well in low light and challenging situations.
_______
Did you know you can capture the Milky Way with your Canon R50 easily and relatively inexpensively with the equipment you already have?
Let me show you how I captured these images with my R50. I’m blown away with the results.
First you’re going to need a tripod or a means of keeping your camera still. love the ZOMEI Q666 - this is a stable light weight magnesium alloy tripod perfect for travel that also converts to a monopod and has a quality arca swiss style quick release plate and quality ball head. I’ll leave a link to a video I made for the best accessories for the Canon R50.
For these images I used the included kit lens - yes that’s right the RF-S 18-45mm IS STM lens. Nothing fancy, nothing expensive!
I was lucky enough to be in an area with no light pollution on a recent trip to Uluru in Central Australia. Here the International space station is actually closer than the nearest traffic light so that tells you how remote the location is (although the resort is only just 30mins down the road - it has no traffic lights). These images were captured about 9 - 10pm at night with no moon. Moonrise was around 2am so it as very dark.
If you’re getting great value from this video please consider a like and subscribing to the channel as it really does help get this information out to a broader audience.

Your channel is really helpful for a person like me who has no prior knowledge of photography or camera handling. I like how you explain everything in your video in a concise yet informative manner. Also, I love to see how one can get such amazing photographs from such an entry-level camera. Thank you, Darren.

Darren - what did you use to process the image(s)? I presume just a levels stretch in Photoshop. I also presume no post processing NR was used as this will soften the image and dull details. You also didn't mention how you focused and got point stars - some users may find that helpful (again, I presume that you used the zoom magnifier function on the LCD screen on a bright star and focused via this). I am surprised that you weren't getting star trails at 15 seconds. Perhaps I am remembering my exposure time incorrectly (short and medium term memory problems; tried this 4 months ago).
@cre8r61
@cre8r61 Жыл бұрын
15 - 20 sec exposures. If you zoom in there are some evidence of trails. Lightroom does do a good job of reducing noise and keeping star detail. Good questions - I’m still amazing I was able to get these from the R50 and kit lens. Yes I focused on infinity - no need to use the focus zoom on the lens

Thanks for dropping by. With manual focus you can also zoom in on screen (x2 or x3 times) and this can help focus on a star. Some lenses can focus past infinity and be out of focus again. It can take some time to get it right. Hope you nail the shot you’re after

Hi Darren. Your tutorial is very valuable. Thanks. However, I've got a little bit sideways question. I have noticed that your video footage is broken, especially when you move camera from left to right and vice-versa. My videos with R 50 have the same appearance - broken. Do you know why this is and whether there is a solution to this problem?

Do you mean jittery footage perhaps? In my video for lenses in Sydney at 00:04:10 the footage is a little jittery - I’m guessing it might be captured at one fps setting and edited in another fps (just a guess). Thanks for watching as I do appreciate it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pbxgp5t-2auchas.html

@davepastern
@davepastern Жыл бұрын
Tried this, but using my used Samyang 14mm lens - can't reach infinity focus (common problem with this lens and requires pulling the lens focus ring assembly part - not something that I am comfortable with). Went with the 14mm as I wanted ultra wide to limit star trailing due to the Earth rotating (was aiming for ISO 3200 on my R3, f4 and 1.5 seconds). Was trying to test shoot from Brisbane suburbia before driving further out West to a better bortle scale zone - 6/7 at home, 3 at where I was hoping to go to). I have a Canon 24-105 f4 lens, may try it with that.

@@rocketcityastro no, you don't get it. The Samyang 14mm has well known focus issues - it will not focus sharply on infinity objects. You need to pull it apart and adjust it, which is a p.i.t.a.
