Having ready access to drinking water is critical for survival - especially if you're spending a lot of time exerting yourself physically. That's why a good canteen is something every #prepper should have.
In this video, Alan Kay demonstrates how a basic canteen can be upgraded to include some extra survival items with a little design ingenuity. Check out Alan's canteen survival kit!

Liked the inclusion of artificial sinew. Strong stuff and versatile. Don't overlook braided fishing line. I happened into a spool of 150 lb. test deep sea line for free. I wrap it around an expired credit card that I cut into an H. I can wrap 200 yards of line around it with no bulk and maybe weighs one ounce. You can never have too much cordage in the wild. LOL.

Boiling water is just about the worst way to purify water in the 21st century, a sawyer mini filters and purifies water and it’s actually drinkable. Anyone who ever drank boiled “water” will attest it’s barf inducing, not what you want in a survival situation, you lose your food and are worse off hydration wise than when you started. So I was really glad to see the sawyer mini filter. I use a tape wrapped Nalgene 1 Ltr Cody Lundin style with a loop under top section of tape, great for lowering into creek without risking a personal dunking. At last Someone including a large SOL Mylar blanket, my kit also includes a homemade tarp, they fold up surprisingly small and would be easy to include in that pouch. One other thing, I would include some individual coffee, tea etc portions, the difference a warm drink makes, on initially finding yourself in a situation. S.T.O.P Stop Think Orientate Plan, saves you running off like a headless chicken, stopping for a drink helps you to calm down and think. Also a hot drink before sleep helps keep you warm. A small petzl e lite is an excellent addition. Excellent kit btw 👍

I’ve been doing this type of ‘prepping’ since 1977 (we just called it camping), and it’s rare that I see something I haven’t done or seen. The tape around the Sawyer Mini is a great idea. I’ve been wrapping jute twine on mine (I like to combine water and fire into one kit). But some tape under the jute is an outstanding improvement. Thanks, this is why Survival Dispatch is on my sub list. 👍🏻👍🏻

Well, we know you know how to use that stuff! Pretty good minimal kit. The space blankets are a godsend IMO. They royally suck as a blanket but they're fantastic for shelter making. Having a reflector over you makes an epic difference with a small fire. Can't argue with anything in the kit although I'm not a big fan of the wire saw. Still, it fits in the kit and weighs next to nothing. It will make a passable bow saw.

Hi Alan: You had me till you took out the wire saw. Everyone know you will use up more energy / calories and daylight hours with that 1970s invention. If you are thinking about the room you have in the canteen pouch a Mora or a small folder is what you need, not that wire saw, other then that I carry everything else. I carry bank line, Artificial sinew I think I'm going to add that to my kit. Nice canteen set up.

Centerline systems now makes a larger canteen kit - The GCC. The smaller size MCC was designed to close tolerances to minimize rattling around. The new larger size is taller and makes a little more room to fit the canteen cup in and out. Also all the pockets are all taller. Great gear very well made !

I have this exact gear (the canteen and carrier) and I love it! I take it with me whenever I trek into the wilderness. Yes, it’s pricey, but well worth it. The only piece of gear I’d suggest adding to your kit is some sort of knife. I have the Victorinox Swiss Army RangerGrip 178 Multi-Tool Pocket Knife in my canteen carrier. It has a serrated lock blade and a double-cut wood saw. I use it often while out in the woods.

Great effort and great common sense. Love your shelter logic. Thank you mate, I have subscribed. I understand that you also carry EDC - Survival items on your person in the layered / defense-in-depth logic. When I was a tank crew commander we a had a 'throw Bag', an ALICE Butt pack with everything you would need for 24 hour to 'return to lines' if your vehicle was disabled. So your displayed kit is the same size as our 'throw bag' of 40 years ago: but your content is far better quality. A Few Additions. I guess your primary cutting tool is on your belt and small First aid kit is in a pocket - both excellent & correct. I would also commend for your consideration : a. Victorinox pocket knife (no chinese crap copy) with a folding saw either the Huntsman or Champ (those wire saws are of marginal value, best used in a sapling bent into a bow shape); b. a USB thumb drive, password protected, with you updated personal data. c. a Spoon & few Wet Fire tinder, food, energy bars, soup, jerky, drink and condiments in Mylar sachets that stack flat (the time you spend making a brew drink is the time your force yourself to Think about your situation and make a Positive Plan of Action. [I carry my spoon in my shirt pocket, along with my comb, signal mirror, 2B pencil & small mote book ]. Your Compass is OK. Make a DIY clear plastic base plate with a bearing line and a Roamer to your map scale: e.g. 1:24,000. Put double-sided tape on the compass base - bingo. Work out the compass error and you should be able to navigate to about 5 degrees of accuracy - far better than being lost. I made a DIY pace counter for 50 cents form colored beads from a craft shop. Your Kit is the modern ideal 'Throw Bag' that should be carried by each person in a vehicle on the floor under their legs - easy to find during your emergency exit. Thank you for your excellent video and great concept for all, from Greg in rural Thailand

Alan good kit choices. Like how you brought up the need for easy to set up shelter many do not realize how fast they can be overcome by exposure (wind, rain, cold or heat) with out shelter and fire if you are already cold and wet may lose the ability to even start either one. Would add bug repellent/head net, a fuel of some kind (small bottle hand sanitizer firstaid/fuel tbsp full will burn long enough for 8oz instant coffee) for times when natural sources may be scarce (floods, etc) also they make a glow-in-the-dark tape good for keeping up with kit items (nighttime trail marker, fish lure, etc.)

I use an old, out of production, transparent red heavy duty. canteen shaped, a container but it has a wide mouth. This I use with a military cup over the bottom and am able to fill the canteen with over 70 survival items. It sits in a standard military issued insulated cover and serves as a great canteen when you put all the survival items in your pockets.

Nice kit and bag. I would add a extra bandana to this kit. As part of a water kit a bandana is used to pre filter water going into your bag or your filter. Cotton thread is also a good fuel for fire starter. On a side note about the Sawyer Mini water filters. They do not fit on ALL water bottles. Some of the cheapo brand small water bottle threads do not work with a Sawyer mini. I tested a two liter coke bottle today and it worked. So name brand soda bottles (coke, dp, 7 up etc) and probably water bottles like Ozarka should work well. Their threads tend to be of higher quality.

That is a well thought out kit to have on your person. Mine is not as nice and a lot heavier. I made up a kit to keep in the vehicle for fixing a meal when checking out a new area. It's a kit using the Stanley Cook Kit to keep in my Jeep ( Wrangler.) Using a Condor H20 pouch. Starting at the bottom of the of the pouch there is a Oilcamp Stainless Steel Space Saver Cup. Then the Stanley Adventure Cook Camp System which fits ( sits ) inside the cup. The tapered sides of the Stanley Camp Cook kit fits inside the cup like it was made for it. Along the outside of the Stanley is a long handled Titanium spoon. Inside the Stanley is the Gen2 Folding Firebox Nano Ultralight Backpacking 3" Stove. On top of the Stanley is a Trangia Alcohol burner so I can cook with either alcohol or wood. The outside pocket of the Condor has a plastic ( Flask shaped ) 8 oz bottle which has the Denatured Alcohol for the Trangia. Next to it is a fero rod for lighting the burner or starting a fire. Folded next to the fero rod is a bandana which can be used if the handles of either pot gets to hot for a bare hand to touch. A few months later I added two canteen pouches one on each side of the Condor H20 pouch. One pouch has a Nalgene canteen in it and the other pouch has a couple dehydrated meals. Thanks to using a wood fire the Stanley has a nice blacken bottom and sides which I think helps it to heat up quicker. The Heavy Cover canteen cup and cover ( lid ) is really nice and there is one in my backpacks food bag for camping. Unlike the vehicle in the backpack I want lightweight items since I have to carry them.

Signal mirror. Surviving is good, being rescued is better. Peanut Lighter. Ferro rods are fantastic, but direct flame is always better. I find that peanut lighters store indefinitely & generally only need topping off one a year or so. I know you have a razor blade in there but personally I would prefer to have a No6 Opinel in there. Square the spine for use with the ferro rod, carbon steel blade that can be used for a fire lighter. Very easy to sharpen & can also be sharpened with a stone.

Consider adding one more thing - - - salt. While salting food is what people think of if you have ever been out exerting yourself in the heat all day and wearing a dark shit when it drys out you will see a white powdery substance on it. This is salt you have sweated out and if you don't replace lost salt your muscles will cramp. I agree with replacing the wire saw with a small folding saw. I always carry a Bic mini lighter, very small and starts a fire as easily as a large lighter and easier than a lens or striker. I have not tried Trex tape but try exterior duct tape. I held on a taillight housing with it for several hundred miles and several downpours at highway speed. While we can make a long list of what we wish to have with us that small kit is easily stored in a vehicle and easily carried. A rucksack or large pack can be left behind thinking that is a lot to carry for the little distance I plan on going. Then we travel the little distance and find we are in unexpected trouble, wishing we had the little kit.

it's not made by heavy cover, it's just a rebranded Keith titanium canteen set made in China, buy directly from the company in China and save money, heavy cover are only resellers, note : I now have two of those canteen sets (bought one last year and another a couple of months ago), if I bought from heavy cover I'd still be crying and would probably only have one, postage and packing are free from China, if their being blocked on eBay.com their definitely on eBay.co.uk , one thing I will say titanium heats fast, but also cools fast too, so I would recommend making a canteen cup cosy/cozy out of reflectics insulation or similar. unless you drink your coffee fast too.

I want to commend you. 90% of the "water bottle kits" I see have the gear in the bottle. this brings 2 problems, 1) no water in the bottle, and 2) to use the bottle, you take the gear out, now how do you carry the gear. I have made a couple water bottle bag kits, and I insist that everything fit in the bag, with the bottle filled with water. good job here, this is a well thought out kit. only thing I would add is a small first aid kit. maybe something that can be attached to the outside of, or straps of the bag.

If you look at the video they placed for EDC and for even just his wallet, you will be able to find many of the things that this kit seems to be lacking due to him already carrying it, such as the knives, a firearm, trauma kits, etc. Since he stated that this is a kit he uses, I would assume that this is not just a stand alone, but to be included with your EDC which should include that.

For your eyesight, "Luteine 20mg/day" Been doing it for 18 yrs. I'm the only one of my bunch not saddled with glasses...Hmm? Nice Kit. I think you've been camping once or twice, right? ;) Cheers

Looks like a pretty good kit. Just one thing missing... I didn't see a knife. An essential survival tool. Otherwise, I like it.

Not a horrible kit, except for the saw, I'm guessing you've never actually tried to use one. You must take really good care of your stuff, my kit looks beat to hell after only a few months.

Three years old? That kit looks like it hasn't ever been used or carried hardly. That mother carrier looks brand spankin new, canteen shows a little use but that's about it.

Since you have a good knife or two on your body how about a small Razor knife with break away blades? And maybe a small Swiss army knife?

The weight you save with the titanium vs stainless is not much when full of water. These are nice but way overpriced.

Get a lifestraw universal bottle adapter kit. Free water, anywhere, no boiling. If the filter dies, make sure you have a stainless Nalgene or similar type bottle. This guy's rig is outdated and ginormous.

there’s very little value to a fishing kit in an urban environment (except maybe the line) unless there’s a fountain with gold fish in it). replace it with a more practical item(s).

Great kit!!! It's missing one item though. A small piece of dried towel sponge for water procurement should you not find any bodies of water. A frog togg or "The Absorber" from walmart's auto section work great! My survival pack has both. When no water is available, you can use it to absorb dew from grass and other plants or from moist ground and wring it out into a container.
