In this video I share some of my experiences and learnings with our cantilever patio umbrella. These are great additions to any patio area. Just a few details to be aware of. This particular umbrella is a Sunnyglade, 10'x13' umbrella. I paid about $270 (May 2021) and I just noticed they go for $300 currently (May 2023) on Amazon.
If you would like to help support my channel please consider giving a one time contribution!

Any amount is greatly appreciated - a few dollars can go a long way to help cover the cost of equipment and other expenses associated with these videos.
Thank you! Fishpotpete

Thank you for this. We have finally settled on a cantilevered umbrella as the shade for our new patio. Our setup with when and where the sun is until 3-ish is identical to yours and this video has confirmed that I am on the right track with this instead of a pergola or pavilion. We are star gazers and we had not thought about the obstruction factor of the other options. New sub.

@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete 6 күн бұрын
I think the swaying is definitely the most concerning thing about these. But there's really not much you can do - if they built them not to sway, then they would collapse to easily, or cost way too much. I'd say 98% of the time, the sway isn't a concern.

That was one of the reasons I wanted to make this video. Even after a couple of years I'm still not totally comfortable when a big wind picks up! If it's a nice day, these things can't be beat. But if it's a blustery day, it's not worth the trouble. Just ask Winnie the Pooh 🙂

do you know if you’re able to close the umbrella of the crank broke? ours fell over from the wind and the crank broke off
@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete 2 ай бұрын
Jeez, well that's no fun! You might be able to clamp on to whatever is left of the crank with a vise-grip pliers or even a pipe wrench to get it closed up. If the entire crank handle broke off, there might still be enough of a nub sticking out of the mechanism to use vise-grips on. You might try to contact the manufactures site for a replacement crank - even if it was Amazon, there should be enough info to at least get you started on locating an actual company... maybe. Best of luck with that!

So what about severe hail storms because I sure get them where I live . Would it be able to survive one? Of course I would fold it in but still
@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete 2 ай бұрын
Wow, that's iffy. If you have a cover, then you would PROBABLY be ok in even the worst ones. I know some of those bad hail storms we have here can really tear things up. Having said that, I haven't noticed hail damage on ours. For comparison, we had a sun sail shade up during the last bad hail storm and that material came out fine (as did our closed umbrella). It filled up the sun shade with hail from time to time until the wind blew it clean again. This was like a little larger than pea sized hail for that one. If your area routinely gets the severely dented cars and broken windshields kind of hail storms, then that might be a reason to avoid one of these. Otherwise, folding it up has worked fine for ours so far. Hope that helps!
@coredadventure1
@coredadventure1 2 ай бұрын
@@fishpotpete hmmm idk what to think! Because last year was pretty bad. They were bigger than pea size . Definitely did a lot of damage. Maybe an awning would be better but I don't know how an awning would do rolled up hanging off your roof with hail. Well thank you very much for the response. I really appreciate it!

@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete Ай бұрын
If you just bought it and it was ripped upon receipt, then you might need to return it... and that's easier said that done!!!! If it ripped since you've had it awhile (like a tree fell on it or something), then that would be a different story. If you're in a bigger city, there might be an awning/tent company that could help - That sound expensive - so maybe a last resort. I think I have seen some replacement tops for these on line - so you might try an extended Google search on that. Different brands can use the same parts and if you have good measurements, they can check and see have a replacement canopy - I was able to do that with the gazebo canopy years ago. Good luck with that! Let us know how it goes. I'm sure other people have had the same problem! :-( If it's a clean rip, then you MIGHT be able to sew it back together (like they do on sail boats) - a local boat store might be some help there??? Or even a patch that can be ironed or glued on.

@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete 5 ай бұрын
So now that I've had it 2 seasons, it seems to be holding up fine!. I think the big thing is to keep it folded when you're not using it and keep it covered in the winter. I used mine several times a week (almost daily) when the weather was nice. I keep thinking the cord will break eventually - but it doesn't show any obvious wear and tear (of what I can see of it). I'm guessing at least one more summer (maybe 2?) before I have to replace the canvass. But the 2 year old original one really doesn't look bad at all. FYI - your mileage may vary 🙂

@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete Жыл бұрын
If you mean to crank it open and closed, then yes, it's a good idea and I would recommend it. If you were to get a wind storm in the middle of the night, you might not know it until you get up the next morning. If your local wind conditions are always calm, then you might be okay though. Once the umbrella is in the down position, it's very stable and can take extremely high winds (assuming the base is secured properly). We had 60-70 mph winds earlier this year and it did fine!

Totally useless with any type of wind though. Even during your video see edit when umbrella starts moving around. A good quality gazebo is still the best option when possible. Any type of wind these umbrellas are absolutely useless. We have one and even a bit of wind - why you see so many for sale on Market-Place. Think we used ours three times last summer and each time had to tie it down.
@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete Ай бұрын
Each have their pros and cons. The umbrella movement is only a problem on a very windy day. They move and that's just part of the deal. I really liked our gazebo, but it's always there - day and night. If you want to do some star gazing with a telescope, the gazebo hampers where you can put your telescope. Our gazebo ultimately collapsed in a storm - frame and all. I think storms are a concern no matter what you're using. Question though - when you say "tie it down", was/is yours bolted down or are you using the water/sand filled weight things? That would be good for people to know if they don't have the option of bolting it down. This video doesn't address the difference. Thanks for your comment - it helps add more context to these things! 🙂

Don"t bother with these. The slightest bit of wind and they strain alarmingly. You end up having to take it down which defeats the point of having one.
@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete Ай бұрын
They do sway in a slight wind and they sway even more with a moderate wind. But we haven't had any issues with them collapsing or anything. They work great and are easy to put up/take down, don't take up much room and you don't have either a pole in the middle or a permanent structure covering your deck. If it's a nice day and the wind isn't crazy, then they make total sense. If you're afraid of them swaying, then yes, don't buy one. That's what cantilever umbrellas do. The Sundowner type shades are similar in that respect - they can sway as well.

Mine made it through a major hail storm last week with high winds, 4" of rain in about 30 minutes, tangerine size hail, etc. Every house in the area needs a new roof, 100's of broken car windshields, 100's of houses will need new siding, repairs to broken windows, etc. But my umbrella was folded up as I normally would do and it didn't get a scratch. If I still had a gazebo, it would be on the insurance claim now.
