Guangzhou, is known to be a Cantonese speaking city but that might be history one day if Mandarin is continuing to be increased. Save Cantonese!

I totally understand! The thing is that the government is promoting and requiring Mandarin-only education starting from preschools, so kids end up not having an academic environment where they can practice and speak Cantonese. It's a huge problem.

Well it makes sense why the government would want a unified language, not that I agree with the government trying to eliminate the different dialects. Imagine a single country and you can't even understand each other lol it can easily break up like that.

Same thing was happening to minorities like Kazakhs in Soviet Union, our language was being replaced with Russian but luckily Soviet Union collapsed and Kazakhstan got its independence so now Kazakh is taking it back.

they don't. It's like english in europe, it's more popular to speak the larger language and most people don't care, they want fast, and quick communication. Sadly kids don't want to preserve the dying languages.

Yeah I went to Guangzhou speaking Cantonese(I'm American but my mom taught me fluent Cantonese) and I found that people didn't understand me and didn't speak it back. I understand Mandarin because my mother speaks both but I'm not confident in it. It really makes me sad. I'm really proud that I speak Cantonese. It's nice that it's still in Hong Kong but it's a different accent and it doesn't feel the same.

You're so right about Guangzhou. I visited there back in 1992 and our Tour Guide from Guangzhou couldn't speak Cantonese, but only Mandarin. All 30 of us (from California), laughed at him for being a "Fake" Tour Guide. He apologized, but we didn't understand him, one bit. LOL! 🤣

You are correct the reason why it's dying off in Guangzhou it has to do with the Chinese Communist Party goal of the linguistic Unity making Mandarin the sole language of the Mainland. Next is Hong Kong where Cantonese is also spoken alongside traditional Chinese characters which are supposed to be replaced by simplified Chinese. Is it really possible to write Cantonese in simplified Chinese or not. In Hong Kong traditional Chinese Hong Kong style is used however around the airport Cantonese is written in Traditional Chinese Taiwan text to cater for the Taiwanese airline crews.

As long as Cantonese entertainment is still available and popular in Guangdong province, Cantonese will not die out that quick. Hong Kong entertainment is still very popular and Guangzhou has the permission to create mainland Chinese Cantonese language programmings as well as entertainment for the television stations. Also announcements in trains and buses and even store announcements are in both Mandarin and Cantonese. Although, it is somewhat declining, they are in much better privileged standings than all the other Chinese languages that are not Mandarin as the other Chinese languages do not have the privileges at all or extremely limited in quantity and popularity and very low budgeted. If the Cantonese entertainment's popularity starts declining and as well as disappearing from the medias, that is when the Cantonese speakers really have to worry.

....yes! I agreed with you, Ameri-Cantonese!!!! Hope you should partition both your state and federal govt to make Cantonese a compulsory subject for ACs. While you are at this subject, assist for ABCs of different ethnicity to partition for their dilect. Unfortunately, in my opinion you will fail. Because most country will used the predominant lauguage (ie standard English, Italy, Japanese, and so on) as their medium of instruction for the national education.

Cantonese is just a dialect in mainland China, Taiwan, S.E. Asia, etc. Similar to Fu Jian, Hakka, Fu Chow, Hainan, etc. The only Chinese national and official language is Mandarin. Currently, Cantonese is still one of the official languages in Hong Kong beside Mandarin and English. However, Cantonese will not be treated as official language in the future because Chinese government only recognize one standard national official language. More and more schools in Hong Kong and Macau are teaching in Mandarin now, Cantonese is getting lesser.
