Every time I hear Cantonese, I just love the tones; it sounds so expressive! I postponed trying to learn it once I tried Mandarin. I am unsure why, but Mandarin was so much easier to comprehend for me. Sigh 😔 even hearing you speak it makes me sad, wishing I could too.

I think your Cantonese was extremely good. A major challenge in learning Cantonese is to not fall back on a Cantonese pronunciation of the Mandarin equivalent if you know the Mandarin word. Going home - hui jia - could easily be pronounced as something like "wui gaa" but the proper way to say it is "fan uk-kei". And if you know the Mandarin word and it's the same as the Cantonese, you still have to learn the tones for the Cantonese word. Or just do what I do and speak it really fast.

Love your videos. They are very genuine showing a non-native speaking Cantonese. I love that as you speak and make corrections. This shows great effort on your part. Many of my friends find that Cantonese is harsh on their ears when they heard it for the first time. How did Cantonese sounds to you when you heard it for the first time? Why did you want to learn Cantonese? Cantonese is alot freer in its colloquial. It is like Jazz improvisation as compared to formality of classic music. They both are good and serve their purpose. Do more Cantonese and your home dialect videos. ❤❤❤ I also love you accent!! Keep it and don’t loose it. It is so cute.

Cantonese is indeed very different! I'm a canto speaker and I don't understand mandarin, only a few basic words and phrases. Cantonese has more tones than mandarin, different sentence structure and grammar and I believe it also has more english loanwords, especially in Hong Kong, due to it being a British colony in the past.

Cantonese is VERY beautiful, but I must first reach HSK6 (9...) before I even think about learning it. It seems about as far from Mandarin as Romanian is from French. Not mutually intelligible but even with shifts like fa for hua I can detect lots of cognates.
@Jumpoable
@Jumpoable 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you are picking out the cognates! I would say it's more like French & Italian/Spanish. French & Romanian would be like Mandarin & the Minnan languages (Taiwanese/ Amoy/ Teochew) with even more differences in grammar & pronunciation.
@QuizmasterLaw
@QuizmasterLaw 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jumpoable Mandarin has just 4 tones Canto has at least 9. I speak French and Spanish and Canto and Mando are much further apart than those two and waaay further than Italian and Spanish (which are mutually intelligible). If you let them write characters then canto and mando are mutually intelligible but without hanzi, no.
@Jumpoable
@Jumpoable 2 жыл бұрын
@@QuizmasterLaw Nope, some books still keep saying Canto has 9 tones, but NOBODY speaks with 9 anymore (LOL perhaps in the Qing dynasty). Modern Hong Kong Canto has 6 tones, Guangzhou has an extra high dropping tone so that makes 7 at most. I also speak French & Spanish. ;) Considering how different French pronunciation is from Spanish & Italian I'd say that's akin to Cantonese & Putonghua. Cantonese & Hakka would be like Italian & Spanish. But of course, Europe is much smaller than China, so there can't really be a one-to-one comparison. Add oil with your Hanzi !
@DavidNgCantonese
@DavidNgCantonese 5 ай бұрын
@@Jumpoable I don't think you understand when people say Canto has 9 "tones". 6 of them are unique tone CONTOURS. The last 3 are entering/clipped/checked "tones" 入聲, where they end very suddenly with k,t,p sounds so they don't have time to rise or fall, and instead are just distributed in high, mid, low and have the same tone contours as tone 1, 3, 6. That's why it's called 9聲6調. So yes, everyone who speaks Cantonese uses 9 "tones" even today, which means they speak with those 6 tone contours & the 3 入聲, entering tones.

@@ReiKoko NO. Shenzhen is geographically in Guangdong province, & yes, it's just across the border to HK. However it's a completely new city, so everyone immigrated there from other parts of China, so the main language is Putonghua. Cantonese will not get you ANYWHERE. Hardly ANYBODY understands Cantonese there, especially people in the service industry & cab drivers. But hey the restaurants feature cuisines from all over China so it's a great place for foodies.

@@ChinesewithJessie Right, but I figure as a native Mandarin speaker and good at languages (your English is basically native, I can't think of or hear anything to correct) it would give me an idea of how much I'm going to have to learn beyond a bunch of extra tones and at least some new vocabulary. Thanks!

@@QuizmasterLaw As a native Cantonese speaker, I understood zero Mandarin as a child until I learned/studied it back in high school and now I can understand and converse in it at an intermediate level. If it's like that for me, then conversely it'll be the same for you from Mandarin to Canto. The two languages are different through and through, from pronunciation, to grammar, and to words and expressions (some Cantonese expressions have no equivalent translations in Mandarin).
@ahenrycc84
@ahenrycc84 2 жыл бұрын
@TravelerPat I've heard that the lexical similarity between Mandarin and Cantonese is less than 50%. Even if the words are the same in Canto and Mandarin, their usages are often different (e.g. "食" is used as both the verb "to eat" and part of the noun "food" in Cantonese, whereas that's only used as part of the noun "food" in Mandarin, with "吃" meaning "to eat" instead for Mandarin, and that character doesn't exist in vernacular Cantonese).
@Jumpoable
@Jumpoable 2 жыл бұрын
@TravelerPat Swatow & Teochew is located geographically in Guangdong province, but your culture & languages are more closely related to Minnan group of languages in Fujian (Amoy/Taiwanese) & also Hainanese in Hainan island. Teochew is of course more similar to Cantonese than Mandarin, as they're both southern Chinese languages, but you would have no problem understanding Amoy speech or Taiwanese if you spoke fluent Teochew.

Thank you for speaking Cantonese in Canton for 1 day! Unfortunately a lot of Cantonese kids in GZ won't even speak in Cantonese for 1 whole day even when they are off from school! LOL very impressive for a non-Cantonese speaker but you accidentally said so many swear words! [hai] (tone 1 instead of 2/6), [gau] instead of [kau] & [jue hai] instead of [jue hoi]! :P & I notice you keep saying [yam] 淫 ("perverted/ lecherous") instead of [yan] 人 ("person")! A few pointers: not all [n] finals become [m] in Cantonese. Like [saan] 山 & [saam] 三. And for most Putonghua speakers, the Cantonese 'aa' & 'a' sounds really trip people up. Long 'aa' is just [aa] but short 'a' in Cantonese is really like English 'u' as in 'yum' or 'but' So 身/新 'san' 深/心 'sam' just sounds like English "sun" & "sum" NOT [saan] or [saam] which would be the above 山 & 三. You can see that the short 'a' in Cantonese corresponds to Putonghua 'e' & 'I' but Cantonese 'aa' is just like Putonghua 'a'. Also, be aware of the distinct [p] [t] [k] endings in Cantonese. I guess you just have to remember them as Mandarin has dropped them all. But since you speak English fluently you should have no problem pronouncing them. Keep up the good work, as I can see that you have a knack for learning languages from your level of English! Would LOVE you to do more videos of you introducing your own Jiangxi dialect! There's hardly any representation of that in media or even online!
