Canvas - Board Game Review - Anyone Can Paint
In Canvas, you play as a painter competing in an art competition. Players will collect art cards, layering 3 of them together to create their own unique Painting. Each card contains a piece of artwork as well as a set of icons used during scoring. Icons will be revealed or hidden based on the way players choose to layer the cards making for an exciting puzzle. Paintings are scored based on a set of Scoring cards which will change each game. Once players have created and scored 3 paintings the game ends.
On your turn you may take an Art card or make a painting. Art cards are selected from a row of cards in the center of play. Each of these cards has a cost associated with their position. After selecting an Art card you must pay its cost by placing an Inspiration token on each of the cards to its left. If you do not have enough Inspiration tokens, you may not select that card. Any tokens on the card you have selected are kept for future turns. The far left card costs no Inspiration tokens to take.
If you have three or more Art cards you may choose to make a painting. Select 3 of your art cards, arrange them in any order and then score them by comparing the visible icons on your painting to the Scoring conditions.
Once all players have made 3 paintings the game ends.
The player with the most points wins!

Score pad not needed, easy basic mental math with only 5 things to score with low numbers. Base game + expansions stacked takes less room than most games base box only, so also not an issue.

Taking 3 boxes to a game night and having to unbox and pack them all however, IS an annoying issue that didn't need to exist in the first place.

@@TheBrokenMeeple You don't "need" to take all three boxes. and its not smart for companies to "future proof" games with the release of a base game. that locks them into a corner of innovation for expansions, because the stuff they create HAS to fit the original box. They are currently KSing a big box storage solution for easy set up. This is the proper way to deal with games w/ multiple expansions. It is silly to complain about a game you bought (or got a free review copy of) expansions for cause the "extra" stuff you chose to buy is cumbersome. "OH no it took me an extra 5 mins to pack up....." Silly complaints when solutions are already in the pipeline.

All for extra money. Simply making the second expansion a bigger box would solve everything, but no the publisher has to find an excuse to get more money out of people. And they announced this big box BEFORE the expansion had fully fulfilled to backers.

@@TheBrokenMeeple ok, have your conspiracies. Bottom line, your complaints are petty. Making a big box may have been a plan all along but they did not ruin their logistics by trying to create both simultaneously and delaying production/delivery. Having a publisher create a storage solution for expansions is a luxury not a requirement. It's not a necessity, especially with how small as a whole the collection is.

Good review! I do think the expansions address a number of your concerns. Reflections adds some decision space in that the cards are now reversible so you have to decide which side you want to use to maximize your scoring. It also adds Signature Cards that makes the artwork itself meaningful towards scoring and not just the icons/colours at the bottom. Both expansions add even more art cards and more scoring cards, which increases replayability in my opinion. Gives you a different puzzle to solve each game. And the Finishing Touches expansion adds a scorepad that incorporates all the modules across the base game and expansions. Also, there's currently a KS for a storage solution to hold everything while also aid in setup. It's just a bit larger than a Ticket to Ride sized box, for reference. As a heavy gamer (Voidfall being my current fascination) Canvas is still currently ranked as my number 33 of all-time. And everyone I have introduced it to LOVES it.

In some ways yes, but the expansions are still not adding a ton each time especially the last one.

We put the game and the 1st expansion on the wall. Still waiting for the 2nd expansion to come to Germany. Hope that'll happen, otherwise I'll have to import an English version.

It does look nice, I´m curios of the expansions. But how many gateways or "easy" fast games is good to have in a collection? Is there a right number to have, for those times that you want something fast to play between heavier or longer games.

I like to have a variety of gateway games to appeal to different tastes, but £150 to get all of this content plus a big box..............that's a lot to ask of anyone.

Love this game as a good filler and easy game to teach. Only have reflections but been told not to bother with 3rd one.

The design of this is smooth and rock solid, this is more of a "me" issue - I found the things I do in this game surprisingly taxing and tiring, without much fun. But I have to say - the "gimmick" of creating art in this game is absolutely beautiful.

I do enjoy Canvas, it is a good light game. The expansions do add more depth and replayability to the game. They have a big box for it currently on Kickstarter, I'll most likely be getting that

I love this game as well. I can't wait for your expansion-review, because the replay value and a lot of more variety is being taken care off there. (Spoiler alert: Double-sided cards anyone! Brilliant!) My 3 boxes are hanging side by side on my wardrobe -- 9/10 for me. Thanks for the review.

At first I thought I'd slipped through a timewarp portal back to 2021 😂 I got Canvas back then but didnt bother with the expansions. Not because I didnt like the game but why bother expanding a super light game ? Now I'm contemplating the big box with all content and then gifting my original copy......

Yeah, I think this was a poor way to manage the game - A bigger box to begin with would have sorted everything. Or at the very least, a bigger box on the third expansion.

The game is great for teaching new gamers as it's so gorgeous, and such an easy concept to grasp, that people get to see what's out there beyond Monopoly and how gorgeous and deluxe modern games can be. It does need the two expansions for additional plays, and bit annoyed the announced the Big Box before they even delivered the third expansion.

@@TheAmazingYeti I got it. But they ANNOUNCED the Big Box before it had delivered. So they could have had it as part of the third campaign. That is what is annoying. Shipping isn't free.

I say nowadays game at £30/ £40 is considered cheap… look at the recent moonrakers and the latest robot quest arena campaign. Nowadays companies just charge like crazy
