To be honest I think they are trying to imitate the muslims with that because the first university of Europe was established by Muslims in 841, Salermo and the clothes do resemble Arabic clothes (to my knowledge). The cap and gown no longer carries such a meaning anymore and is purely for academic reasons. Has nothing to do with buddhists it actually originates from England and it was to do with degree of achievement in academia and religious status at the time but it no longer carries any religious significance as far as I know and is purely for academic purposes. If it still had such a significance I would see the problem with it but as it stands it holds no religious meaning.

But the robe is exactly like an Abaya a woman wears. I wore it without the hat at my graduation.

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu. To avoid all this, simply do not attend your graduation. Just recover your graduation certificate a few weeks later, and you will graduate in abstentia. Nobody will even ask about you and nobody even care about it whether you came or not.

But the history of this clothing does not come from religion nor pagan tardyon, it merely started off as a matter of convenience as it kept you warm and was practical overall. Later on in the 14th Century, universities made it mandatory for professors to wear it, but just as "formal" wear and again, nothing to do with other religious groups or paganism. To say that we should not wear this, because none muslims wear it, means we also should not wear suits for work or any sort of clothing other than what the Arabs used to wear. Now, if the robe has pagan routes then YES I would agree that it is best to be avoided, but to say this is wrong ... I think it is a bit of a stretch and you would have to say everything that is not invented by muslims is wrong.
