Cape Town, South Africa, just narrowly avoided being the first major city in the world to run out of water. But now residents are realizing just how precarious their water security really is - even the city's police are keeping track of it.
The fear of "Day Zero" - or when the city's dams fall below 14 percent - has sparked major conservation efforts, including city-wide water restrictions for residents and businesses. Currently, residents are limited to 13 gallons of water per day, the equivalent to a six-minute shower in the U.S.
VICE News rode along with the “water police” in two different Cape town neighborhoods to see what these enforcements looked like on the ground.

How do you reduce crime when the crime is caused by POVERTY. Unless your trying to say the good people of South Africa need to vote for EFF and take wealth away from the 5-10% that hold majority of the country's wealth, you have no right to tell cops to stop a hungry person from stealing in order to stop the rumbling in his stomach.

The police of Cape Town are fooling you Vice 😂😂. Yes day zero was very close to happening, but this was about a year ago. I also have never seen the police patrolling my area where I live in Cape Town to look for people over using water. We are now also allowed to use just under 30 gallons of water per day... Maybe this was recorded a year ago or longer?

Part of leftover living laws from apartheid. While black lower class live in a cycle of poverty, the whites continue living in the rich land that their fathers had. However, things are changing. Just like Americas neighbourhood segregation.

Many affluent whites are leaving the country. Meanwhile, migration from all over Africa is feeding into the townships. South Africa is getting economically weaker by the minute. But ZA's government is so corrupt, that I don't really see a way out for them. Places like Namibia are flourishing now that they aren't part of ZA anymore, so the problem is mainly down to incompetence IMO.

That is a very rich and posh area of Cape Town. Go to the northern suburbs of Cape Town and you will see a totally different white neighbourhoods. The police went to a very rich area. You can compare the house values with those in Cape Town area and those in Northern Cape Town Suburbs and it would be vastly different. Most whites do not live in these wealthy areas. A lot of mixxed races also live in the Northern Suburbs. I live about 30 minutes away from Cape Town CBT, dont own a house and still live with my family. Im 30 years old. Most younger generations do not own houses, that goes for all colour of people. Most rent apartments.

I pray that they can get a bunch of rain but not too much, just enough for their water to come back. I'm glad the cops are taking a big action towards this issue. What they have been doing is incredibly inconsiderate like it won't matter to survive with the money you got if the water you need the most isn't even around to help you survive as well. It doesn't just affect others it affects them but they don't seem to realize it. It's incredibly great what the cops over there are doing with those inconsiderate people

We had lots of power blackouts here in San Jose California this year which forced me out of the house since I had nothing else to do. Only to realize that the nicer areas of town never seemed to have an issue with their power it was only ever the poorer areas that got their power shut off to save energy. They would rotate it between different areas when it would happen but the more affluent areas always had power regardless. I'm not just talking homes here even all the businesses were affected.
