French economist Thomas Piketty has fundamentally changed the way we understand inequality.
His global bestseller 'Capital in the Twenty-First Century' brought the phenomenon of rising inequality to our attention and highlighted its economic basis. Piketty’s latest book, 'Capital and Ideology', takes the discussion even further to examine inequality as a political phenomenon, shaped by ideology and social institutions.
What are the ideologies that have created our current age of inequality, and what are the risks this age poses? What would need to happen for change to occur?
Join Thomas Piketty in conversation with UNSW’s Richard Holden, as they explore the political basis of inequality in our hypercapitalist age.

Hey Man any thoughts on how The French can pay Haiti back, reparation for crippling it and doing such unprecedented inhuman act of making Haiti pay for its freedom. We need that money back now!!

Haitian here: what is haiti going to do with the money? Get ‘lost’ again? You know whatever money given to haiti won’t actually reach the people, right? We have to be realistic. We need to deal with making the country less dysfunctional first. For example, when was Haiti’s last election? It was 6 years ago. We need to make sure we can actually stand still first. Then we can seek reparations. Also, Piketty addressed haiti paying france in his book, Capital and Ideology. Maybe you should read it, Brotha?

I'm curious about what he says about productivity growing through the seventies. Wasn't there a major economic downturn during the Carter administration? Was the "top tax rate" actually paid by a lot of the wealthy during that period? I feel like there is a LOT of data missing here in this interpretation. I know he didn't have the time to break it down, but I'm curious. Also, the growth of inequality is bad, but isn't it true that the quality of life for the poorest has gone up generally over the last 70 years?

I'm about 100 pages into Capital and Ideology and when Piketty talks about inequality it's not just income inequality but the power discrepancy that comes with income inequality. It's true that the standard of living is much higher in the western world, but Piketty is talking about the world broadly speaking. I don't know which country you live in, but in the United States a technically higher standard of living doesn't mean you have a full belly or a roof over your head. It doesn't mean that you're not being crushed by debt that you were told to take on to better yourself, etc etc. The kind of inequality Piketty refers to goes for beyond just simple paychecks. I know that this comment is two years old but just in case you do read this

Income inequality in the United States means the middle class is shrinking. But it's okay because you have a cell phone in your pocket and 20 brands of cereal to choose from right?

People always say "Look at Thomas Sowell" but can never actually convey his ideas to any depth. It's almost as if he's a preacher of a type of religion and not an economist to take seriously.
