Government should be more serious in dealing with kidnaping by enacting law that will make kidnapping an offence punishable with Death Penalty.

Listing to the First Lady, the problem of kidnapping goes beyond making it a capital offence. Virtually all the states in the South South, South West and South East have adopted capital punishment for kidnapping. But the northern states are yet to do the same. The main issue is corruption which makes it impossible for government to implement existing laws. The question is, how many kidnappers have been executed in the last 35 years after Onyenusi? Even where they have been condemned by courts of competent jurisdiction, the state governors hardly sign their death warrants. Kidnapping can never stop because, some of these kidnappers at one time or the other may have served the politicians as political tugs. Even where they are charged for kidnapping and murder, the judges are pressurised to grant them bail. Sometimes they also get off the hook through jail brake. This situation puts the life of witnesses and informants at risk.

The issue is the lack of grouping that should have enabled the country's security architecture to operate on regional grounds rather than state. Nigeria has 6 geopolitical zone. They should form the basis for creating a solid and responsive force that are enabled with updated equipment by pulling resources together rather than creating state police hurriedly. The staffing should be drafted from each state with proportionality being the basis for such. This will allow for reinforcement when needed and also pave way for appropriate resources.
