Capital punishment, sexism and the Lionesses, and Ed's fishphobia | Pubcast #17

We've a cracker for you today.
After the England team lost against Spain in the World Cup Final, we're talking the inherent sexism in the country's reaction to the achievement, and the grim reality of women's football at large.
Then, we're talking about Lucy Letby, and the country's trigger finger when it comes to demanding the death penalty when heinous cases come to light.
Finally, a classic PolJOE tangent after we all find out that Ed has a fear of fish. He also doesn't like to eat fish, but that's unrelated.

Ava's issue with men talking about the women in their lives when discussing women's football was just a whisper away from what I think is the stronger point: we still take it as the norm that women can look up to and see the world through the lens of both other women and men (see: literature, sport, film, music, etc.), whilst men can only do this with other men.

But part of the point in all of it was that suddenly many more women were inspired by the Lionesses in a way they hadn't with men's football, which contradicts the first half of your point I think. I think people of all walks of life are more typically personally inspired more by people similar to them

I totally get Ava's point about people not engaging with football (or indeed anything regarding women's involvement in...well, society) for the right reasons, but also get Ollie's point that the level of engagement is at least better than the alternative of not caring at all. I also thing that the latter is likely to naturally lead to the former, just not within a single generation. It's not ideal, but I do think it's better. That said, I'm a bloke so take that with a shaker of salt.

It works in other ways too, I work in engineering and am the only woman in my office and I have ZERO interest in any sport mens or women's and haven't watched a football match ever, including the women's world cup. The AMOUNT of shit I get or piss taking for me not being a feminist or 'how are we better feminists because we're watching it' jibes from the guys there, as they simultaneously watch Andrew Tate and spout red pill trad wife shit, is infuriating. It's not seen as just a good sporting event to watch, there's still some kind of negativity or mocking or something in there. Like, ohh it's good *for women*, or they've done well *for women* followed by a get back in the kitchen joke. I'm really pleased more people are watching in general and hope it long continues, not just sports wise but stem and politics and filmmaking etc until it's not even considered surprising that we watch both or have both men and women and it's not gimmicky, but that can't happen unless it's not used as a tool to criticise women and men who just aren't interested in it in general or where we like play off each other or use it as a stick to beat people with. If you like sport, watch both. If you like movies, don't just not watch a movie because it's made by a woman or assume women led films will not be for you if you're a bloke. Just support the shit you like regardless of who's doing what. I dunno, I'm probably just pissed off with how gross the guys I work with are haha

Priti Patel makes a claim of deterrence with ZERO evidence of deterrence. She has to bear the burden of proof that it would deter if she is to make that claim while using it to take the life of someone convicted. The evidence available all indicates there is no deterrent effect unique to the death penalty.

From my understanding of history the reason the UK Government got rid of capital punishment in the first place wasn't because we suddenly became less barbaric but it was because of the numbers of miscarriages of justices that had already killed innocent people in the 1940s.

At 38:05 - The context for ‘an eye for an eye’ is that justice can’t be more extreme than the crime committee - I.e taking someone’s land can’t be punished with death. It’s archaic now, but a large movement forward at the time.

I think they hit the nail on the head that there’s been a 100 years to build up animosity against the English Men’s team, while the English Women’s team feels relatively new, so there’s not been the chance to build that rivalry between Scotland and England in the same way as in Men’s football. For example, I have zero interest in cricket, so couldn’t care less if England win or not.

The point about "Jonny Vaughan" supporting the other teams team" is right. It seems a wasted opportunity that Women's football is totally affiliated with Men's football teams. A lot of people (me included) would have issue supporting Anyone other than Arsenal Ladies, because I support Arsenal Men. If women's teams were independent of that - North London Rovers? or Manchester FC then I would be free to support a completely different women's side to my men's affiliation.

I entirely get Ava's point about using the "I have a daughter/wife" meme in relation to sexual assault etc. It's as if they need to have an excuse to all the other men out there to empathise, instead of having the courage to say "it's wrong, full stop". However I don't conflate it with the new interest in women's sport. My husband has been watching women's sport for many years now: Rugby, cricket, golf and football. He says that often the style of play is different (skill and tactic based, rather than raw power) but just as entertaining as the men's sport. Over the years he's gone to the pub and tried to advocate women's sport but he's beaten his head against the brick wall assumption that because they're not as fast or as powerful then they can't be as good. In the past year those attitudes have changed quite dramatically - hence the queueing up to see the final in pubs. Appreciation of women's sports is quite a new thing and I think we have to give it a chance to settle down while people discover and are surprised about how good it is. Eventually I can see the scenario that Ava would like to see coming true, but it's a bit soon yet.

The statement on success and the arrested development of the individual is well documented and recognized. This isn't just about money though. It can be around anything valued by the individual. As I understand it, and I don’t claim to be right, “an eye for an eye” was meant to lessen punishment, not call for more. It’s saying, don’t kill people for everything, rather, only inflict the harm on them that they did to you. In a way, it’s an anti-death penalty directive (for anything other than murder). Jesus came along and added that people shouldn’t even call for revenge, that we should turn the other cheek.

Ava's point about support for the lionesses is right. But... Showing the boys how it was done is a point that was made about the Euro win repeatedly. it has sadly become gendered like blue and pink. I like football and enjoyed it as a free to view match. But I grew up in an area where a young girl who grew up to be Ellen White couldn't find a team once the FA banned her from playing in boys teams, the fact girls can now find a team is the Lionesses achievement but I think that started under Hope Powell.

This is all so true about football and just generally the sexism against women. As someone that isn't a football fan (don't hate it but just doesn't interest me) I see exactly what Ava said and how crazy men are with football and defending and all the patronising sexism even when trying to be positive and not sexist. She's right that only when we don't see any difference between what men and women are doing will there be true equality between the sexes.

Ava sets out a great point about the women's game. I don't give a crap about football either way, but I do have to roll my eyes at all the platitudes I've seen come out about it. Sunak, Starmer, and the royals were particularly funny when it was news that none of them could be bothered to even turn up to the game, when you know damn well had it been the men's finals both would have all been front and centre making sure they got their positive PR with the doting masses. As far as I'm concerned, so long as the athletes got paid the same (they probably didn't) then good on them for getting to the final of their respective careers, and good luck on winning it next time or some time. But other than that, maybe I'm a party pooper, but I find there are more important things going on than the results of a sport, whatever it is.
