House members passed the D.C. CRIMES Act Wednesday, despite opposition from District leaders who cited potential local-level challenges when handling local crime going forward.
Eighteen Democrats joined Republicans in voting for the bill.
The D.C. CRIMES Act, which stands for Criminal Reforms to Immediately Make Everyone Safe Act, is sponsored by Rep. Byron Donalds (R - FL). It would limit youth offender status to 18 years and younger (instead of 24 and younger as it is now), direct the District's Attorney General to create a website posting weekly statistics on juvenile crime and prohibit the council from enacting changes to existing criminal liability sentences.
