CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Truman (Philip Seymour Hoffman) talks about his experience overseas with celebrities and his mother's death.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The creation of one of the most memorable books of the 1960s -- and the impact the writing and research would have on its author -- is explored in this drama based on a true story. In 1959, Truman Capote (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) was a critically acclaimed novelist who had earned a small degree of celebrity for his work when he read a short newspaper item about a multiple murder in a small Kansas town. For some reason, the story fascinated Capote, and he asked William Shawn (Bob Balaban), his editor at The New Yorker, to let him write a piece about the case. Capote had long believed that in the right hands, a true story could be molded into a tale as compelling as any fiction, and he believed this event, in which the brutal and unimaginable was visited upon a community where it was least expected, could be just the right material. Capote traveled to Kansas with his close friend Harper Lee (Catherine Keener), herself becoming a major literary figure with the success of To Kill a Mockingbird, and while Capote's effete and mannered personal style stuck out like a sore thumb in Kansas, in time he gained the trust of Alvin Dewey (Chris Cooper), the Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent investigating the murder of the Clutter family, and with his help Capote's magazine piece grew into a full-length book. Capote also became familiar with the petty criminals who killed the Clutter family, Dick Hickock (Mark Pellegrino) and Perry Smith (Clifton Collins Jr.), and in Smith he found a troubling kindred spirit more like himself than he wanted to admit. After attaining a sort of friendship with Smith under the assumption that the man would be executed before the book was ever published, Capote finds himself forced to directly confront the moral implications of his actions with regards to both his role in the man's death, and the way that he would be remembered. Capote also co-stars Bruce Greenwood as Capote's longtime companion Jack Dunphy, and Amy Ryan as Mary Dewey, Alvin's wife who became a confidante of Capote's.

@@yesterdayitrained Since my original remark, I must make it a two way tie between Hoffman for Capote and Denzel Washington for Malcolm X. Going back to look at the KZfaq footage of Malcolm X in interviews and speeches reveals the uncanny resemblance between Denzel and the character he plays. I like him in Malcolm X better than in any movie I’ve seen him in. And working with Spike Lee didn’t hurt. He’d just let the cameras run while Denzel improvised. That’s what happens when you take a year, as he did, to take on every facet of the person he portrayed. Watching the level of craftsmanship that goes into biopics the past fifteen or so years, makes me think that movies of quality still have a future.

I grew up in New York City in the West village. He lived maybe a 20-minute walk from me. I think this was either 2010 or 2011, but I'm with my girlfriend at the time and we'd go to the same coffee place almost every morning when we were together. So we're in the coffee place my girlfriend is getting her coffee made I already have mine, and I'm prepping my coffee putting the sugar and the creamers in and then all the sudden I look behind me and I feel like everyone in the room is looking at me. I look to my girlfriend and she is staring at the man next to me. It was PSH himself preparing his coffee. Everyone was just so quiet and whispering. I don't like going up to actors or artists that I respect. So all I did was just pretend that I didn't know him and continued preparing my coffee. But I knew I had to say something that wasn't full of appraisal. I can't remember our full conversation but it went on for 5 minutes. It was all small talk and jokes and passing each other creamers milks sugars and sweeteners while we had our backs to the rest of the crowd that was building. I pull out my cigarettes, and he asked if he could bum one. Im 6ft4 so he hid behind me casually cause of the crowd. We lit our Cigs and introduced each other, my girlfriend came out and I introduced him to her as Phil. It was late fall 🍁. All three of us enjoyed the sweater weather sipped our coffees and cigs and parted ways with handshakes and he said thank you. I was so confused. Out of reflex I said you're welcome, but to this day I am still confused as to why. Couple of years later he died. I was so grateful to have had a genuine conversation with him as if we were strangers. 😢 RIP Phil and thank you.

So like I'm here because I finished watching the Joker, and Pheonix was AMAZING as the Joker so I started watching clips from his old movies. One was from Walk the line and someone said "How did Pheonix not win the oscar this year" and someone replied "Because Philip's Symore Hoftman as Capote was the greatest performance of all time" and so here I am. What I want to say is that the Joker bought me here and at 0:11 that man played Thomas Wayne in the Joker.

Proud Kiwi I saw the same comment too! so I came to this video. I have seen Capote before, Phillip Seymour Hoffman was amazing in this.

That’s actually Chris Cooper. He didn’t play Thomas Wayne. Him and Brett Cullen do look alike however

Damn this impersonation is spot on lol. Capote had a very funny way of speaking.

As great as Hoffman was, Chris Cooper more than commanded his share of attention in every scene they shared.
