Capricorn One: The Best Sci-Fi Thriller You Never Saw

As far as conspiracy theories go, very few have had as much of a life as the notion that NASA faked the Apollo moon landing. In some ways, one can understand why people felt this way, as it was one of the most critical events in human history, and the only witness was a TV camera. Back then, people distrusted anything they couldn't see with their own eyes. In the seventies, conspiracy theories started to get famous, especially as far as the government went, with this the era of Watergate. People no longer trusted authority, and into this fraught environment came Capricorn One, a sci-fi-tinged conspiracy thriller that was one of the most popular films of 1977 but has since been largely forgotten - save for a small cult of devoted fans.

Love the intentional bombastic intro music which sets the movie up perfectly. Jerry Goldsmith was on a roll with Star Trek just around the corner.. And a really good thriller. Once you start watching you sure want to see how it ends. At the time Peter Hyams was directing movies with great story ideas...

Saw this in the theater as a young teen. Had a slight crush on Karen Black. The scene where Gould's character almost dies because his brakes are cut was in the trailer, so that got me to pay to watch this. Very underrated movie. Good call, Chris.

This is my all time favorite movie that I can quote word for word. The last two minutes are hair-raising, tear jerking joy! Brenda Vaccaro's expression is supreme. For years I played over in my 10 year old brain the continuation of the final scene!!!!! Loved this little short about this film! I'd love to see this remade with today's technology!!

After seeing the thumbnail and title, LOL(!!), I came her to specifically refute it and talk about a glorious scene that always stuck out for me... only to see you lead off with that very scene, lol! I always wait for Brenda's slight quizzical head-tilt when listening to her husband. Wonderful posting, THANKS for this vid and getting the word out! I'd love to see one for 1973's The Paper Chase.

I've been a huge fan of Capricorn One for years - it's an excellent, and incredibly taut thriller, with some amazingly well cast actors filling out the roles. The dialogue is sharp, witty and effective. Every scene with Elliott Gould is a joy to watch -particularly when he gets to bounce off another character. If you like sci-fi or thrillers, it's an absolute must-watch. Wel worth tracking down the Blu-Ray for.

I LOVE YOU GUYS. I saw this movie when it opened at the Hollywood Pacific Theater and was mind blown. It has one of my favorite Jerry Goldsmith scores and writer/director Peter Hyams spoke a lot at our film school when I returned to the fold. But the cherry on top was your humble subscriber getting to direct the great Elliott Gould for a documentary on the "REAL" first Russian Cosmonaut because of the nature of this movie.

Absolutely one of my top FIVE favorite movies EVER! Probably number one; I actually saw it on the big screen when it first came out, several times! I really liked the aviation scenes and the iconic biplane-helicopter chase scene is amazing! Jerry Goldsmith's score is just the icing on the cake. Being a huge Jerry Goldsmith fan (all the way back to "The Blue Max"), it's easily one of his greatest movie compositions. I highly encourage folks to check this one out!

I was too young to see this in the theatres. But I was a film music nerd and Goldsmith was my no 2 favourite composer. So I had the soundtrack years before I saw the movie. And it’s a superb score, one of his best I think. When I finally saw the movie I wasn’t disappointed. Goldsmith’s music elevates this film to a higher ground. I regularly rewatch this flick with great joy.

OJ was probably the most popular sports star in the country in the 1970’s. Running backs were the big names in the NFL in the 70’s. Ali was a huge name but still had a lot of haters from the Vietnam stuff, Reggie Jackson was the Barry Bonds of the 70’s, you either loved him or hated him, Joe Namath’s best days were behind him. The NBA was struggling big time. Hockey was mostly a Northeast and Canadian sport. OJ was the man back then.

Can imagine this film was to 'real' for the audience at that time. 1977 was post Watergate and then the rising Political and financial cost of NASA. Maybe it's why this was mostly forgotten? And why Star Wars was so huge? Either way, this film, along with 'The Andromeda Strain' and 'Fantastic Voyage' Are three of the best sci/fi conspiracy films, as well as being great books to read. Likely forgotten because timing is everything in show biz, and the film had the misfortune of being released soon after "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and right before "Saturday Night Fever" in late '77, two films that epitomize the shift in the nation's mood compared with the early '70s, when this film would've been a big hit. Might have done better at the box office had it come out a couple years earlier. Starting in 1976, if you look at the top films, Watergate conspiracy stuff was fading fast, with "All the President's Men," "Boys From Brazil," and "Network" the only big films in the government/corporate conspiracy vein, and only "Men" was grounded in actual reality.

I love this movie as shameless escapism. This was back in a time when people actually went to theaters and applauded at the end, it happened for Walking Tall and it happened for this movie. For more recent examples of this you have to remember what it was like to go see Avengers: Endgame. As much as I like this, it saddens me that with all the rampant conspiracy theorizing there are too many people who think this is some sort of daring documentary. I say, enjoy this, then watch Apollo 13 as a chaser.

It’s fast paced and makes you wanna see what’s gonna happen next but somewhere around the part where they have the communique with their wives it starts to fall flat and seems to Almost take the easy way out the ending is lacking to say the least but overall it’s an interesting concept worth giving a watch. Loved this as a kid. Hal Holbrook was brilliant in any baddie role he took on. Elliot Gould was a staple of the 70s and is way underappreciated these days (Adam Sandler wasn't even worth mentioning here). Karen Black is her usual (yet unforgettable) smouldering self. Speaking of which, we don't actually _see_ her legs here... Nevermind OJ. Did anybody _else_ throw up? 😉 The absolute standout however is Telly Savalas as the wisecracking cropduster. Let's not forget the brilliant runaway car and air chase sequences! Look, Ma, no CGI! 😁

As a huge fan of director/writer Peter Hyams, Capricorn One is among his very best films if not his best. I always thought he was quite underrated in Hollywood. Even the Made for TV films he did before moving into features are fantastic. Check out the Richard Boone classic Goodnight, My Love if you don't believe me (it's on KZfaq). As for Cap One, Hal Holbrook gives a speech that is written and performed pitch perfectly. All the writing is top notch as is the directing. It's a superior, fun matinee thriller. The kind Hollywood no longer makes. Other Hyams classics include Busting, The Star Chamber and Running Scared.

This was an impressive movie. A few years after release it bounced around Cable TV like HBO. Then TV networks such as TBS. It may be more relatable to people that grew up during the 70s and 80s. Mostly because of some of the references, actors and look and feel of the movie. Personally. I’d give it 8.5/10.

My main problem with the movie is during that staged press conference Elliott Gould is somehow tipped off that something is fishy when James Brolin mentions to his wife he would like to take the family again to Yosemite. There was nothing in Brenda Vaccaro's demeaner or expression that would have made anybody think something was up. The big issue is THIS is the moment that sends Gould into action but it doesn't make any sense.

I saw this picture in the theater with my parents when it was first released. We enjoyed it. But watching it today, it feels very dated - and the plot, of course, has some glaring holes. Telly Savalas must've had a week off from _Kojak_ - and the director asked him: Just how over the top can you be? it's entertaining for sure. Award-worthy? No.
