There was no "legal cap" written in law. It was a vague political pledge. Ed. .... Interesting thing is because of Brexit people aren't leaving the country, so that also accounts as to why we have the highest number of people entering and not leaving.

It's financing itself AND many public sector wages. So why complain? Immigrants are literally paying over 1000£ a year each just to access the NHS. The path of a family of 4 to get permanent residence after 5 years costs about £50K and the parents need to earn well above average wages. Almost all of the immigration is for work.

WHY don't they work? Do we not have control of who comes in? Or do the cabinet just disagree with the will of the people and so willfully ignore them?

The irony is that the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Frisians, Romans, Danes and Normans all came to the island of Great Britain illegally on small boats but the largest wave of migration in the entire history of the island came legally while the Tory government was in charge.

On legal migration: 1) People have been able to enter the UK to work, but these are not doctors and engineers, but overwhelmingly low income jobs, with the minimum income of £13,000 previously. Plus families. 2) Unless someone earns over ~£35,000, they are a net cost to the economy. Add in non-working family members and one needs to earn more. 3) If we have net immigration of 1 million each year and build 250,000 homes, it causes a housing crises. 4) This is not about racism or xenophobia, but the realisation our infrastructre cannot cope with the current population. 5) Caps did not work as there was never any sincerity in them with the hope the issue would blow over. 6) Why do students need to bring their families? 7) Our workforce shortage can be filled by reducing the size of the State and move civil servants to the private sector and closing universities. And cap the time allowed on sick benefit with stress and anxiety to 3 months, which will free up over 1m workers.

The economy is not doing well and immigration has still gone up for two reasons : one declining emigration and two the structure of the UK economy which generates undesirable low wage jobs.

I was under the impression many people migrated to the colonies in North America, Australia, NZ, South Africa, etc. But it seems the British population decline was already tiny in 19th century.

Governments issues Visas for legal immigration so it’s a political decision and they have ultimate control. So Tory Governments have chosen to allow higher migration so they need to explain why. I suspect they know it’s good economically but don’t have backbone to explain this to the public and justify their actions but just play politics. We need a grown up conservation across all political parties about immigration and the impact if it’s restricted to very low levels ie. Lower growth, higher taxes, lower pensions etc. rather than blaming immigration and government issuing more Visas. So stop playing politics and grow up and educate the public about this subject. Brexit was in part about immigration and clearly that was a lie because the Tory’s have allowed immigration to increase post Brexit even though they argued it was the EU that stopped them controlling it pre Brexit.

The claim about filling shortages is just not true. In the tech sector, hundreds of thousands of workers were brought in during previous years, and now UK citizens with degrees are struggling to find jobs in IT. Ironically, the government still provides funds to bootcamps.

Visa data only cover people who require visas, which means that before the end of 2020, EU citizens were not included in the figures. So: many sectors needed European workforce, eg NHS, and in this new highs we take into account people who are replacing who cannot come anymore. I am surprised the video is not covering this aspect. On average, students who come to the UK on a visa stick around for about 3.5 years, 'cause that's when their visas run out. Contrary to what some might say, most students don’t stay forever - only about 5% stay on after their Post-Study Work (PSW) visa expires. The rest head back home. Instead of spreading ill will towards all immigrants, we ought to focus on making sensible policies with a long-term vision. This constant knee-jerk reaction with new immigration rules just doesn’t cut it. The UK needs skilled workers, international students, and investors. It’s not a good idea to give off an unwelcoming vibe. It won’t do us any good in the long run.
