what is shelf paper? and how do i get it. this series is so helpful, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom!!
@CaptMike2 жыл бұрын
Shelf paper is a material that is sugar based (usually) material that burns off and leaves a white nonstick material behind that inhibits the sticking of glass to the ceramic shelf. The shelf should also be treated with a non stick (for the most part) coating called kiln wash. Both can be found starting here: www.amazon.com/Bullseye-Shelf-Sheets-Fusing-Supplies/dp/B084KYRKZ8/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2FEXALOXS1HQ2&keywords=kiln+shelf+paper%5C&qid=1643418189&sprefix=kiln+shelf+paper+%2Caps%2C68&sr=8-2 and here: www.amazon.com/Fireworks-FW737A-1-Pound-Kiln-Wash/dp/B008D1OQGW/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1CJIRQ1Z75LQY&keywords=kiln+shelf+wash&qid=1643418247&sprefix=kiln+shelf+wash%2Caps%2C63&sr=8-4.

Hi, this is great! I found 2 beautiful handmade santa mugs in a thrift store from the year 1949 and the artist forgot to glaze the bottom of one of the mugs where the date is and her name. I want to preserve the bottom of that mug. Can i just add some glaze on that mug and microwave it for about 5-6 minutes without the microwave kiln? I don't want to damage the rare antique but want to coat the bottom with something that will stay when i wash and microwave it with coffee. Do i need a microwave kiln for this small project?
@CaptMike2 жыл бұрын
Since you are dealing with something old and maybe valuable, I would not try to glaze the bottom. You might try sprayinga little clear enamel on the bottom, but I could not say that would work. Almost no one glazes the bottom og their work. It is possible that waterproof ink was used. Just be careful with the cups and you should be OK

@CaptMike3 жыл бұрын
Karen, porcelain is fired to over 2000 F. My microwave kilns only fire to about 1500 F or so. If you are firing using porcelain clay you could try and fire a small piece for an extended time, say 20 minutes or so at 3 minute intervals and see if it turns out translucent like porcelain does. If you are looking for a "white" glossy finish you could simply bisque in the Microwave oven and glaze with either white or clear. Hope this helps a little.

About how long does it take to cool? In the regular kiln I wait at least 8 hours...do you have wait that long with the microwave kiln, as well? I'm so excited to try this! Thank you!!
@CaptMike3 жыл бұрын
As a rule, I let the kiln sit about 30 minutes with the MW door open, then I place a 1/4 piece of ceramic under the lip of the kiln and let that sit for about 30 minutes. Usually that is enough time so that you can remove the kiln and place a thicker piece of ceramics under the edge. Usually it take about 1 1/2 hours to cool enought to remove the top of the kiln completely. I have rushed this somewhat and cooled in less time. It just depends on how much of a hurry you are in. I have never had a piece of ceramic crack no matter how hot it was when I removed it....think Raku.

Alexandra, when I made this video I did not measure the temps. I used a Duncan coe 06 glaze, CR853 I think. I have since experimented with how hot a MWK will get ad find they can reach maybe 2000 degrees F. Most cone 06 glazes mature at around 1830F, but will sometimes work at around 1700f. See if your MW will push your kiln to around 955C. Maybe try another glaze, Duncan for instance. I know this will work, just have not tried all makes of glaze. Let me know how it works out for you.

@CaptMike3 жыл бұрын
It's all a guess! I usuall find it takes about 15 minutes to heat the glaze up enough to mature and that is for a low fire glaze. Keep check on the piece in the kiln and when it glows bright red let it cool and see if it is glazed. It all depends on the glaze and your microwave.

Hi Capt! I am watching and rewatching these videos as my makes keep exploding. I made it through bisque first time then exploded with glaze, second time didn’t make it 3mins to bisque and same 3rd time. I have preheated all clay at 90’c (UK) for 30mins prior to trying for bisque. Any tips? I am also completely new so struggling with dry time, I have seen some say leave it a week and others able to bisque same day as make. Any drying time advice between make and bisque, then to glaze and glaze to fire? I just want to stop the explosions 😂
@CaptMike Жыл бұрын
It's hard to say when I'm not present to see. I do know that if you use a regular kiln you can bisque clay that is not completely dry as the kiln heats up a lot slower. That is the problem with MWK's. Theu heat up very fast and if there is any voids or moisture present the piece is likely to blow up. I have had a few small pieces blow up, but not many and if I get to the glaze stage it usually works out fine. Try making your pieces thinner (for bowls). solid pieces tend to be more problematic.

Hi Captain Mike. I keep having issues with the glaze bubbling up. Do you think it could be because of the high heat? I put it on for 15 min (after heating it up slowly on lower wattage for 2x3 min). And when you do the 3 min increments do you let it sit for a while before going for another 3 mins or do you just quickly check on it? @CaptMike3 жыл бұрын
Hila, don't worry a fire if you are keeping a close watch on the firing. The glaze or clay will not burn and unless something inside the MW gets too hot (wires) nothing should catch on fire. Always keep gloves handy so you can snatch the door open if something should go wrong and never throw water (should a fire start) on a electrical appliance. I soda based fire extinguisher will be OK.

@@parastephkar98 If you are using a microwave kiln all you will need is a low fire clay. Personally I would stay with a high fire clay as all clays bisque at the same temps (about all the microwave kln will do) and you can use low fire glazes on them. Any good low fire glaze will be just fine. They seem to masture Ok for me. Duncan makes a good selection.

A 600 watt microwave will do the trick, just might take a little longer. Fire the piece until it is glowing red hot and then carefully place the piece into a chamber with a combustable material in it for the raku effect.
