Did your molds work for the glass slumping? I made a few pendants but the edges get flat and thin so I still need something for oval n square, the round for me doesn't sell so much....maybe I just need a mold

how much time you need to let it cool after firing before holding it ? ??
@CaptMike6 күн бұрын
Depends on the size and density of the piece. Usually about 15 -20 minutes.

Why do some people vacuum out the bubbles of the investment an you don't? I been doing this silica flour, dental plaster, water investment for a couple years off and on now with limited success. My issue is the molds will often crack. I wonder if I vacuum out the air in the investment as it's setting if it will increase the durability of my molds. I use homemade leaded glass and ideally need something capable of withstanding 2200f.

I’m new to ceramics, but I have my background in stained glass and Glass fusion. I’m searching KZfaq right now to see if you can just put glass frit in a glaze because I suspect that’s how these crystal glazes are made. I’m searching for something in pink that’s equivalent to makos blue splatter wear. I can’t find it, so the glass frit idea popped in my head. I would like to try it and clear and in a white base. Thank you for your experiment! I LOVE your results!

love the video. I have the tree of life mold for wine bottles. Do I have to use a kiln wash on the mold before I put my bottle on it and before i fire it?
@CaptMike6 күн бұрын
Yes, always use kiln wash on a mold that will be used to slump or mold glass. Failure to do so will make the glass stick to the mold.

Hi. I made a comment on your other microwave mold video. I noticed this effect on round glass pendants I was making. I would melt bottle glass in a kiln paper lined terra cotta saucer, but refiring with frit sprinkled on top often led to the same busting apart effect. I found going SUUUUUPER slow, 30 secs, wait for heat to distribute, 30 secs, and repeat for 10 times. then jump to 1 minute, again fire wait, fire wait, 10 times. 2 minutes, 3.... Well this takes a loooong time. I have yet to do so, but have seen someone say they put their pieces in the oven before firing in the microwave and they never have a problem. I see this as a challenge I want to solve. I am going to be testing a few things for molds themselves like I said previously. I have sludge from my rock tumbler (it is mostly used with glass) that made a nice little refractory tester piece. I am going to mix graphite powder that I just bought with low fire clay, and also do a crushed perlite/clay mix. I did try mixing some slaked lime made from eggshells into clay for a test disc. Was nice for refractory, but was too brittle. May also test plaster and silica recipe I have seen for standard glass molds once my order of plaster comes in. I also will use the graphite as a wash just to see if it prevents glass from sticking. To make the molds I will be making them out of Monster Clay (plasticine or similar would be fine too) and then casting it in plaster. I will use slips to make thin walled molds. I also saw in a video that the molds a user had were hollow, with a small opening on the side for ventilation. I will be attempting to replicate this.

You have some great projects planed and I would like to know how they turn out. I do love to experiment with different things, especially those materials the "experts" say woill not work....you never know! With glass, just make sure you do not mix different types (COE) as that will cause cracks and stuff for sure.

Some of the ingredients are interchangeable, a substitute for potash is sodium bicarb in certain things and sodium bicarb becomes sodium carbonate when it reaches a certain temperature...

I’m trying to form a shape over a face plastic mask, would plaster work with forming a new shape on the mask and would it harden? I’m a noob too all of this stuff haha 😅 I was also wondering if it would stick to the plastic because it’s a smooth plastic finish im trying to put the plaster over. A lady at a hardware store I talked to said it may not stick and will be difficult to do so.
@CaptMikeАй бұрын
The plaster will harden, however if you are going to leave the plaster on the mask and there is any flex to the mask the plaster will turn loose or crack. Plaster does not bend.

Can you use stained glass in place of fusing glass!
@CaptMikeАй бұрын
Stain glass is problematic in that you can never be sure of the COE. If you mix lass from one batch with another there is a good chance it will crack. Also I have had a lot of trouble with devitrication (fogging/hazing of the glass)

@CaptMikeАй бұрын
You must have an exceptionllly small MW. I have small 600 watt ones and the kiln fits fine. You should be able to pick one up at a good will or thrift store pretty cheap.
@michaelpearson1272Ай бұрын
Save you throwing plaster out. Use a plastic flexi vessel then just let it set in the tub. All you do is flex the tub and brake the excess plaster up. Then when you make a new mix. Half fill the mould and dump all the dry bits of plaster in the wet mix. And this will bulk your mould up. Then fill it with the rest of the wet mix.

If the piece was glowing cherry red it should have glazed. If using a glaze that fires to a golss usually 15 to 20 minutes does the job.

How do you keep the marbles from running off the little kiln platform? Can you use a dab of glue or some sort of vaseline to keep them in a design you want?
@CaptMikeАй бұрын
Actually I cheat. I grind a flat spot on each marble with my diamond lap grinder. What you suggest might work or super glue, but the marble may move around when the vasiline or glue burns off.
@RadioactuveToy2 ай бұрын
Going to be experimenting with this soon. I plan to add some refractory materials to the clay, calcium hydroxide that I made from egg shells and crushed perlite. Hoping it prevents the mold from getting hot in the center.

Sounds like the temps never got high enough to melt the glass. The shelf paper will turn brown anf the binders will burn off leaving a white powerlike residue. Try firing for a longer time and let me know the results.

@CaptMike2 ай бұрын
If the crack is in the top part and nothing has fallen off it will probably be OK. You might want to try using a little water glass/sodium silicate in the crack. It is in a liquid form and will seep into the crack and when dried and fired it will solidify. Thats just a suggestion. I have not tried it in a crack.

If you are trying to use the plastic pot as a mold make sure you use somekind of a mold release on the plastic and there are no undercuts on the pot that will hamper removal.
