As I was growing up with the only play time in pencil, I called it “scratching in” with the little crisscross marks. Im 69 years old now and Landscape and Portrait Artist of the Year has moved me in ways I never was able to experience in the past. It’s the appreciation of the artist by the judges that never fails to move me. Thank you.

I know this is a crazy comment to leave, and I really love this show, but I absolutely LOVED the subtle background music they chose. IT DOES NOT INTERFERE with any of the content or dialogue, but is wonderful. I leave this comment because so much background music is just dreadful/annoying/interfering and THIS IS NONE OF THOSE THINGS! I usually complain when it's bad but this was so good, I wanted to say something.

I'm staggered that the only portrait that actually really looked like the sitter wasn't even in the top 3! The Freddie Fox painting, that Freddie chose, painted by Jack, was the most impressive. Jack should have won hands down. It's like they try and go for these overly contemporary styles and bypass traditional talent. The winner's portrait was like a pretty painting on a chocolate box. And although I wasn't a huge fan of Catherine's more caricature painting, out of those 3, it was the best one.

Vincent Van Gogh is the true inventor of that hatching style, albeit in a looser way, You can see it throughout his sketches. I too have used that specific style since I was a teenager - am old now, and have seen a few others adopt it too. All influenced by Van Gogh. It’s not new and he didn’t invent it but rather has adapted it in his own unique way with really beautiful results. Well done all the artists here. There was some extraordinary talent, I loved them all. The sitters were fantastic too.

Funny enough….when I was about 15 or so, (back in 1978) I used that same “language” as George (sp?) in some of my works in high school. My teacher hated it!! I certainly did not get recognition for the “inventiveness” lol and did not get good marks, and that sadly was one of the first impressions I had with self expression….as in….wrong/don’t! Too bad that that teacher likely didn’t realize the negative impact on a young girl. Fear not…I’m 61 and still overcoming misdirections! Carry on and persevere! Hahaha

There was quite a big gap in the artistic talents this time around, the results very varying in quality and likeness. Some were fantastic, some average and some barely beginner level. Often the painters are more in level. However the judges ability to find geniality in poor paintings always astonishes me.

I am a graphite artist (as a hobby), so I can appreciate how good a drawing can be... but I can't imagine a graphite artist ever making it to the end, no matter HOW good they are. So, I wonder why they are ever let on the show? To be fair, I haven't seen the entirety of the series, so maybe a graphite artist HAS made it and I just didn't know.

Thanks for bringing it up! I don't mean to deminish his work, but that technique is not "george hatching" or new and it seemed to affect their judgment a lot. Makes me angry how much they brought it up and pushed it as a sensation. Even I've copied that hatching somewhat around 10 years ago from several artists to see if it's for me..

So Kathleen completely dumps on any artist that ventures too close to realism… which was the original purpose of portraits before the invention of the camera. But then she gets lol giddy about a portrait that’s almost cartoonish. And I like the submission. I mean, sending in a portrait with sunglasses… bold. But it’s kind of flat. You’re not going to put the usual highlights and shadows all over the place but you can make it pop slightly. Unless the subdued approach was done for a narrative purpose. Either way, I’m an amateur artist who loves all manner of art and can appreciate the effort and intent of the artist… then you have Kathleen who hates technology (forgetting that many past artists’ used the technology of the day to lay a transparent image on their canvas or help with resizing and proportions), hates realism, and finds most traditional methods to be boring or outmoded. At least the other two keep open minds

37:28 -For ONCE they actually cleary say, that the likeness is missing. The same goes for 36:42, but there si no "sense of Ross" in it, its just not good at all. 36:57 is fantastic, it really got the hardliner-guy right, its artistic, not boring, really great. 37:46 would have been cool if they had caught the resemblance, however it made the young man look like in his 50th. But it has potential. 38:12 - hell no, the face is painted like a 10 year old would. But the other likenesses of the woman are both great. Really ups and downs here.

I really feel for the grey haired painter....her portraits were the best, yet she was not chosen. When she looked at the other two remaings artists portraits, she must have felt fairly sure to win, because hers were really better. The disappointment must have been palatable.

I've been watching most of these competitions and it seems these three judges actually don't have a clue on portraits, watch em if a painter doesn't finish a portrait and it stinks there likely to win it .

Why? He did not achieve any likeness, it was a completely generic painting. This is a portrait competition. Likeness is a basic requirement. Just choosing someone because its "different" would be an insult to all the other artists who actually painted the sitter.

@@endlessstudent3512these judges more often then not go for what is different and sometimes no likeness
@endlessstudent3512
@endlessstudent3512 7 ай бұрын
I notice, but i think, considering the subject, this is unacceptable. Likeness is literally another word for portrait. The main target of any portrait is the likeness. One can change the setting, colors, style, size, background...but catching the likeness of the person they are painting in a clearly recognizable way is the very basic and essence of a portrait. That the judges ignore that is mockery to all the good artists that manage to catch the likeness, because thats also the difficult part. One small mistake can change the whole face and make the sitter look completely different. All those painters that just paint a generic face with the right hai color are making things easy for themselfs and that should not be rewarded. @@chubbyjaydraws

Head was indeed too small, but I think for this kind of painting, that does not matter that much. Also drawing fom a photo is nothing to turn your nose at, as long as it is not traced but freehanded. The boy is a non professional, of course he trained by painting from photos. nothing wrong with it.
