I think it's a great idea, but 100% you need some shield around the blade so it or rocks don't go through you.

Build a shield to keep debris from bonking you in the back of the head. Also some higher gears might make the blades go faster. More tire revolutions = more lawn mower blade madness.
@sachideshmane5088

Locking one axle would give you half the blade speed. Also, real brush hogs use pivoting blades on the ends of a spinning arm so things don't break when you hit a stump.
@jimgoodwin6440
@jimgoodwin6440 Жыл бұрын
You may already know this but Bush Hog blades are mounted on the hub with a single bolt such that they swing freely. So if they hit something solid, they just bounce off and swing out of the way but the unit doesn't stop spinning. Then centrifugal force allows the blade to swing back out to resume cutting.
@ThunderHead289

That was the part where I had said I already made a critical mistake and looking at a mower for 5 minutes before starting would have revealed that

That is a flail that uses a chain. Really dangerous because the chains break and fly off. Bad day for you if it hits you.
@MaxGiganteum
@MaxGiganteum Жыл бұрын
@@assassinlexx1993 You're correct, flail mowers use cables or chains with a piece of hardened steel attached to the end of them. The number varies depending on the size of the unit and available power to drive the mower. They're lethal on vegetation - especially vegetation you normally don't want to mess with such as wild blackberry patches or similar growths that are covered with thorns or spikes. They're also preferred for growth such as trimming back tree branches or brush that contains "heavy" brush or bushes that need to be completely wiped out. As for safety, all those units I've used or watched were contained in a steel shell (which effectively was a scattershield) or were all facing away from the driver when in operation. As long as you operate them as designed, they're safe.

I started gathering parts for making a papercrete mixer. Similar idea, but the pinion points up and spins a lawnmower blade inside of a tank for chopping and mixing the papercrete. Those actually work pretty well. I have a Lincoln 9" axle with open diff., one end of a 1/8" thick round fuel tank, about 4 ft diameter and 3 ft tall. And plenty of old drive line ends and lawnmower blades. Helps that I had a welding and fab business for 30 years and still have my tools...Now that I'm retired maybe I'll finally get around to it?

You may call it "redneck engineering", but in northern Scotland we class it as "made on the croft". You use what is at hand, the welds might be a bit rough, it looks a bit Frankenstein-ish, but does it work,? Yes,! Your neighbours will come round, laugh and criticise it, but also suggest a few modifications, and in two years time they will all have built a similar machine and have forgotten about the day they came round and laughed at you. Keep up the good work,! Another difference is, in Scotland it would be painted with "red-oxide" paint, as the wet weather would make it rust, and it covers the bad welds.!

@@skinnyWHITEgoyim, When the wheel is rotating the blades it's opposite of what your truck/car does. Wheel rotates 1 revolution & the blade (attached where the former axle used to reside) will rotate 4.11 revs. So the faster the wheels spin with a smaller overall diameter along with higher gear ratio will in fact create more rpms @ a given wheelspeed.

Find a brush hog deck that the gearbox is shot and do the same thing. To answer my own question, No it does not change the timing. It does somewhat effect how the distributor gear drops in to mates with the cam gear, maybe by a tooth or so. For perfect alignment to # 1 cylinder, you and tweak the oil pump drive rod the distributor goes into and get it to match up very very close , or perfect match up to # 1 if you get lucky.

It's quite cool, looks like a rehash of the ancient implements, pulled by horses or oxen. Nice job there! (Defo bigger wheels)

My great grandfather made one of these. I remember watching the farmhands use it around barns and tobacco bases. That was back in the 80’s. I don’t know whatever happened to it after getting a real bushhog. Probably went to the sinkhole.

Luke, since you are a Ford man, we must be blue blood brothers from a different mother. Nice job fella as this is something I never built but thought of from time to time.

Most COOL! My cousin and I were always coming up with sh*t like that. We were kids growing up in the middle of nowhere Texas. Our first cars were junk we pulled out of the junk pile. What we didn't have we'd modify from something else, make the part or raid our neighbors junk piles. We had fun. Learned how to be resourceful. and came up with some crazy stuff. Wonder we still got all our fingers, toes, eyes and such. My hearing does suck though.

Nice! Actually, iffin you swap out to slightly smaller tires, or air down those, and attach small brushes to the tips of the "blade" you could also use it as a lawn sweeper/lane buffer. Cuz, you know, everyone loves a well buffed lane.
