There’s a car fire every two days in Singapore. The two most common causes - an overheated engine and electrical faults. But what can push a car over the edge to spontaneously combustion? And are we doing the right thing to prevent these fires? Plus, an electric vehicle (EV) future beckons in 2040; these cars run without a combustion engine and instead use lithium-ion batteries. How much of a fire risk are these batteries? Talking Point host Steven Chia goes in search of answers.

One very important thing not mentioned here is NEVER LIFT BONNET/HOOD, as it will cause a huge flare up because the fire will have a fresh oxygen supply drawn up through the engine-bay to feed the flames!

General rule of thumb: Always check your fluids & NEVER run your car without fluids such as coolant, oil, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, real differential fluid, brake fluid. So many people don't get this and they destroy their own cars as a result. You can't afford not to get fluid changes or keep fluid in the car!

Watch the temperature gauge.

I can't believe that someone who could smell but also see fuel leaking from their vehicle would actually think its safe to drive! Gasoline has an auto-ignition temperature that is slightly greater than 530°F. It doesn' take long to exceed that temperature under a car hood. Dude, the good Lord gave you two clues that you had a serious problem. You're very fortunate to have escaped.

Almost had my first car toasted when my electrical wiring touched the line of compressor and aircon causing heat which caused some spark luckily I immediately noticed the smoke coming from the hood and my father quickly disconnected one of the batteries to pour some water on the affected wiring (which isnt the best thing to do but there's no other choice), coincidentally stopped right beside a water station and help us stop the starting ignition of fire. It undergoes general electrical wiring now but it does leave a dark spot on the inside top of the hood, and we are thankful its just like that. Kinda traumatizing sometimes but hey, keeps u alert and aware all the time.

Steven another question, as CNA had been broadcast is neighbor county. Why singapore personal car easier get fire, but as commercial car like taxi hardly get burn... Why could it be regular car user don't regular self check their car condition?
