Car Gets Stuck In Drifting Snow

Drifting snow brings traffic to a halt on the A537 Cat & Fiddle Road from Macclesfield to Buxton today (13th Feb 2013). Heavy snow combined with strong winds made driving hazardous with blowing snow reducing visibility and causing drifts to accumulate in exposed spots.
In this video a car and van both get stuck in drifting snow. Other motorists help to push the vehicles out of the way allowing the snow plough to get through, clearing a path to get the traffic moving again.

I have driven for over 50 yrs in all types of bad weather. Got stuck a few times, so finally broke out and bought some good winter tires. Man, what a difference compared to different all season tire sets I've tried. IT WAS WORTH THE INVESTMENT.

This road is actually one of highest in UK and just needs a bit of snow to stop everything. Plus some years we never get any snow for people to practice driving on.

If you live in a place that gets snow, then you really do need winter tires. All-season tires become slippery 'HOCKEY PUCKS' when the temp drops below freezing. I have a 2006 front-drive Toyota Corolla, with Goodyear Nordic tires, and I regularly go through snow that deep. I use my car to plow the driveway (with snow 30cm deep) with a home-built snow plow in the front, that is how good winter tires can handle snow like that.

Yeah, you're probably correct (I'm a moron who cannot drive, that's why I need winter tires. But wow, do those winter tires ever help this moron drive really well ! )

A heavy 4 wheel drive truck with good tires and good ground clearance will go places light weight cars can only dream of going in snow.

Come to maine ..... Last storm we had I plowed for the town and i could'nt see the lights on the plow it was snowing so bad. Good to see them helping her out of the snow drift though. I love winters lol.

A lot of the drivers that I watch in these vid clips, as soon as they get stuck, they turn the front wheels into the deep snow making it harder to move. Stay inline with your tire tracks when trying to go forward, or backwards.

you all have better vision than me, because I sure can't see the type of tire. if the snow drift is high enough it lifts the weight off the tire and you loose traction. nothing wrong with using winter tires tho, definitely better than all seasons.

The first car had winter tyres on the packed snow under the car was lifting the car making it lose traction.

Winter tyres are the only solution or snow socks as seen the descending van (5:20). They work well too on the driving wheels.

I've only been truly stuck a couple of times in my life here in the Northeast U.S. and I always had all season tires. As far as I'm concerned it comes down to skill first.

You just need to try winter tires for one snowy season, you’ll never go back to driving on all seasons in the winter.

@@bdawg8907 I had real snow tires for two or three winters years ago, and only because they were given to me. I didn't really see much difference, but I was a truly skilled driver even then. That showed me that snow tires are of more benefit to the less skilled category of drivers.

@@joewoodchuck3824 were you on ice? Thats where I notice the greatest difference with the softer compounds in the winter tires. That said, there’s definitely a difference between cheap winter tires and a more expensive set. Over the years, I’ve upgraded to more expensive Nokian Hakkapellita’s, the best winter tires as far as I’m concerned 😊

@@bdawg8907 I don't recall the exact details, but living in the northeast, three winters is likely to turn up ice at times. Nearly a million miles of driving over the last 60 years has taught me that the most important factor all year round is my own abilities behind the wheel.

Clearance is an issue, but there is only 6 inches of snow and that car could have got through. I had a 1990's rear wheel drive BMW that would not even move on the flat. With winter tires it overtook a Range Rover up a snowy hill near Chatsworth. RR had summer tires... try it they are cheap to buy.

She should be ticketed. If you own a car without all wheel drive in a climate that has snow on a regular basis. They make 4x4 for reason.

Modern vehicles have no ground clearance; in deep snow aerodynamics means JACK SHIT basically you;re driving a grocery cart with useless fucking tires > Stay home or else find a decent 2nd hand vehicle built for shit.
