How To Drive In Deep Floods

Living near a road that floods....a lot...I have seen many drivers fall victim to the floods but over the years I have observed the best way to get through a deep flood. It is always best not to drive through flood water but if you have no choice or you find yourself in deeper water than you were expecting, here's my advice on how to get across to the other side.
Enter the water at walking pace. As your car hits the water, it will create a bow wave. You should follow the bow wave at about 3 mph (or a brisk walk). Trying to go faster will increase the water height at the front of your car and could result in water being sucked up into the air intake.
If you are in really deep water (well over your door sills), slow down to a crawl, slip the clutch and rev the engine to stop water getting into your exhaust. As long as the water level stays below your air intake (which is usually just below the front of your bonnet), you should be able to get yourself out, but you may find you start to float (rear usually floats first) or that water starts seeping in through the door seals but don't panic and maintain that slow pace to preserve your engine.
Water in an engine can result in broken con rods and pistons which usually means your car will be written off or you will face a big bill for a new engine.
I am not a driving instructor and this is just my opinion based on years of observations. The footage was recorded on Shuttington Road near Alvecote in November 2012 by hadders1973

After driving through deep flood it is recommended that: 1. You check all lubricating oils;engine oil,transmission oil,etc and change them if they have been contaminated by flood water. 2. Check your air filter and radiator for debris and thoroughly clean them. 3. Clean the engine by pressure washing it. 4. Re-grease the vehicle's differential and other various joints.

we have big floods in ireland right now. here is my warning. i drove through a 100 meter long flood in my ford transit t 280 and the flood went right up to the top of the wheel arches and i stayed in low gears and moved very slowly and i got through and all was well------ until the next morning when i started the van and it wouldn't go into any gears. i thought for a min or 2 being mechanically minded and switched the engine off and then it would go into all gears. i guess the water had bonded the gearbox fly wheel with rust and so it welded itself with rust. so i put it in gear and started the van for a fraction of a second and i heard a small bang and then i took it out of gear and restarted and it went into all gears. lucky for me i didn't leave it for a few weeks as it would have cost loads of cash. my advice is avoid floods if you can

The key is to keep the engine at a steady acceleration to avoid water getting into the exhaust. Another caution is 'never change gears'. If you are in first or second gear never go up to third or higher. Choose a comfortable powerful gear and pass the water in it. Increase speed if there is a cross current, just enough to prevent being swept away. But honestly I would not venture into unfamiliar topography.

This helps me understand why or how I kept my Suburban from dying here in St. Louis 2 weeks ago. I was getting on the highway at 4in the am didn't know it had become a swimming pool. Once I did it was too late. So I at least went to the high side of the highway, had my 4x4 engaged and went thru at a steady pace. I too almost panicked and let off the gas to stop but my instinct kicked in and said, "No, keep going!" I did and made it through. The 4 cars that got on the highway with me, I could see their headlights cover over with water in my rear view mirror and disappear. Never been thru anything like that in my life. Great video

If the water gets sucked into the engine through the air intake then it will hydraulic, water being incompressible, wrecking the engine, bent con rods, plus other mechanical mayhem. check the hight of the air intake on your car. A lot of people think because they're in their comfy tin box they are invincible, they're not.

If you happen to stall (hydrolock) your motor under no circumstances should you attempt to restart the vehicle. Air is compressible, liquid is not. Assuming the motor didn't sustain any damage when it hydrolocked the act of trying to restart it will cause severe damage as all rotating components are under extreme pressure and stress from being locked against an immovable object like water. If you do try to restart it at the very least you'll be running the motor dry as water is a horrible lubricant and displaces all the oil from the cylinder walls. More than likely you'll end up bending or breaking rods, breaking valve stems, putting holes in pistons, block, and or oil pan, and scoring the crank journal requiring a long block (lower half internals) replacement. Other than finding another route the best thing you can do is drive at only 8 to 10 km/h to stay behind the pressure wave your bumper is creating.

What would happen if tou get a hydro lock and your engine cut off? Will it start again after the water clears the intake? If driving a 4wd with stick, should i put the 4 wheel in 4L and in first gear and crawl rather than drive through it quickly?
@chronically.advocating
@chronically.advocating 2 жыл бұрын
If very lucky you may get by with fluid change, and a slightly bent valve. It may start again, but doing so you run an almost guaranteed risk of breaking rods, pistons, scoring crank journals, in other words destroying the motor. As far as technique only if there is moderate current should 4L be needed 4H is plenty. Yes leave it in 1st gear, or possibly 2nd if the vehicle normally has problems maintaining steady rpms in 1st. Either way the key is to go slow no more than 10 km/h (about 5 mph) so as to stay behind the pressure wave your vehicle and bumper push out ahead of you.

If possible evacuate right AWAY. If not possible, DON'T drive. If that's not a option, if the car fills up with water OPEN YOUR WINDOW RIGHT AWAY, that's your only way out. Climb on top of the car, stay low, ride with the car if it floods, wait for rescuers. Don't ever stay in the car during a flood when if it turns upside down you're trapped and you cannot get out. There's one more thing if driving into water like for example a pool where it's silent water. Than you can also open your window and climb out or, you wait til the car is filled up with water and than climb out. AGAIN, this does not count for FLOODING! Just some advice... in case if someone needs it, The best thing is keep ahead of the weather, evacuate if you can.

Good tutorial, thx. I guess it wouldbe safe for VW to even stop at this water height? Will it be the last chance for your engine, if you see the wave coming to turn the ignition off and wait?
@chronically.advocating
@chronically.advocating 2 жыл бұрын
Only if you see it quick enough. It takes roughly 0.5 seconds for the internals to spin down completely and stop creating a vacuum through the intake. However it only takes 0.001 seconds to hydrolock and destroy the motor. As far as the van is concerned that water was either stagnant or extremely slow moving so yes it was safe for them to stop, however under no circumstances should that motor be restarted until inspected and all fluids changed or catastrophic damage to the motor will be the result.

Put your air conditioning on maximum and recirculate. This creates pressure in the cabin and stops water entering through your doors so quickly. Lower your tyre pressure so the car doesn’t float. Do the drive in reverse so the air intake stays free from water. Remove your number plates before doing the trip. Do not go at a brisk walking pace. Go really slow. A slow walk. If you can’t do it slow you can’t do it at all. Leave the transmission in low or first gear. If the engine stalls you need a mechanic so don’t restart. If you make it through your engine and transmission also need a mechanic so go straight there. Also your electronics will rust and your carpets will never smell the same. ITS JUST NOT WORTH IT. Go the long way or wait for help

@hadders1973
@hadders1973 8 жыл бұрын
+icarrydateam The pressure of the gases leaving the exhaust are generally high enough to prevent water from getting in. Its a bit like putting your head under water and blowing through a straw, you don't get water coming into your mouth. On a manual car, you can dip the cluch and increase the revs a bit to increase the air flow out of the exhaust but it is not essential to do that.

Not advise cars at all to attempt water crossing. If your very well versed in Offloading and know your 4x4 . I've had my Jeep up to the top of tires and hard to see over my wake that's pushes up like a wave . That's roughly around 3 foot. That was yesterday. Not a bridge but an under pass that's known for rising water because of the creek. Not the first and not the last. I've seen more full sized trucks and range rovers hydro lock there than I have fingers. .The depth is unforgiving and the damage you can do to you or your vehicle isn't not worth it. Lift it and get a snorkel. Don't buy cold air intakes especially if your gonna try water fording Unless your very careful.

Peter Carlson 2/3 of the world's roads aren't flooded to the point where water reaches the front grill. If it's only an inch, fine but this is clearly more than that, probably several inches, or even a foot. It's people like you that think they're hot stuff until the water becomes too deep and sweeps their car downstream to where they either drown or have to get onto the roof to wait for a helicopter. All you're doing is adding to the death toll. Must be nice ignoring blatantly obvious evidence that contradicts your theory.

I think this is stupid. You should never drive thru any amount of flood waters. You never know what could happen. The road could be washed out underneath, or the road might be weakened by the water and cause a sinkhole when your car enters. Water is very powerful. Dont be stupid and drive thru it. Take an extra few min and take another route or detour, most roads that are flooded will have a detour sign.

As a 50 year operator, and latterly owner, of both an Austin Champ and a GMC DUKW and mechanic i find this video merely proves "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". So much crucial information is missed out before making the correct decision and after maintenance needed to restore reliability. PS 4x4 and a snorkel don't cure all ills, but you give a whole parts and repair industry income with your ignorance. So you get what arrogance deserve.
