On a new car, I do the first oil and filter change at 1 K miles, then at every 5 K interval or once a year, whichever comes first. Other fluids, I base replacements on the owner’s manual or a little earlier. My cars all reach 300 K miles without any major problems.

Yes I agree with frequently changing your fluids and filters, i changed the full synthetic oil every 10K miles and I got 237K miles out of my 2013 Toyota Highlander before I sold her. But also never serviced my transmission and when I went to inquire about changing the fluid, nobody wanted to touch it due to the high mileage and lack of maintenance. Very good video with very detailed information. 👍🏾

You are much better off changing transmission fluid regularly from new. Sadly if you leave if for 200 k then don’t change it as you may well dissolve crud which is blocking leaks.

Well in my family we (my mom, me and my sister) had a Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD 115 horsepower, bought with 40k km, chip tunned to 145 horsepower at around 100k km, we changed oil at 15k km, my mom was the owner, she sometimes forgot when was the last time she changed oil, so a few times she changed it at 30k km, other fluids... probably nobody knows, and a car ran strong till 370k km. I drove it as a teenager often quite hard, she was driving short distances to work, at weekends there were longer distances. Overall the car didn't drink oil, didn't leak, turbo was original, nothing wrong mechanically, we changed it because electric components were starting to fail more often. It was 17 years old.

another important one you miss is washing your car, especially in the winter if you live in an area that salts the roads. Its not so much about keeping the car clean as it is not letting the salt crud build up all winter and waiting until the spring to wash it. I see it every year on the first nice day in spring. Scores of people taking their car for the first wash in months. I bring mine through the touchless wash with undercarriage (important) pretty much every weekend in winter. Sure I might spend a couple hundred dollars in washes but if it buys you another few years with the car before its too rusty to be safe then its a worthwile investment. During the summer you can take it to a regular self serve wash less frequently and for cheaper.

Number one recommendation. Learn how to do your own work. I just did a timing job on my 07 Mustang GT. Cost me $700 in parts. New VCT solenoids, cam phasers, new chain, new tensioners, guides, gaskets, new front main seal, went ahead and put a new oil pump in while i had the timing cover off as well.. The guides had broken off and were causing problems and the VCT solenoids were sticking and causing misfires. It's running great now, though, with 160k miles on the clock. This would have cost thousands at a shop.

Well, meanwile in Germany/Europe: We have long life oil intervals (usually 15-30k km/10-20k miles or 1-2 years depending on usage calculated by the car) since around year 2000 and it works out quite well without destroyed engines all over the place... Damaged engines usually are not oil related, but also those are rare... My personal vehicle is at 220.000 km and counting with oil changes between 25k and 30k km uses consistantly about 1 liter oil (max to min on the dipstick) in about 22k km, so I refill about 300 ml between oil changes. The engine and the car is in very good condition. But the same engine (e.g. Opel/GM/Buick) can have a 25k or 30k km interval in europe and a 10k km interval in US, so I don't think there is a real rational for those short intervals other than the oil-change lobby in US... Also in semi trucks, the oil change interval can be as high as 150.000 km in europe and it works like the engineers thought it should... Coming from an engineer...

I'm not ASE certified but heat kills engines early. Paying attention to the temperature is crucial. If you notice it creeping upwards over time it can be an indicator of a failed component. Also, inspect where you park for puddles or drips. There are no fluids in a car that should drip. You may get condensation from the AC or exhaust. But that is just water and will dry up.

Hi Shari, unfortunately the crooked dealers and in cohorts with manufacturers to push long interval oil changes. My personal opinion, is do your oil changes every 5,000 kms or every 3 months. Cost of oil changes are far cheaper than engine replacements. Especially now days engines are so complex with GDI and Turbos. Love this video Shari, you hit all the important points on automatic transmission fluid, brake fluid and coolant. If I may add, replace the battery every 5 years regardless if it is still good. You will save your alternator by replacing battery every 5 years.

5000km or 3 months is usually a bit excessive when using synthetic oil on modern engines. I've seen enough oil lab analysis results to feel confident that quality synthetic oil has no problem protecting the engine for at least 8,000km. For mineral oil yes you should do it more often. Otherwise might as well save some money and save some good oil going to waste.

I think a good habit is to check the oil stick every week or two. If it starts to run low or it goes dark brown, just change it. (Assuming it's not just sitting unused for long periods of course) I have a NA sports car, and because it doesn't have a turbo it won't burn oil as quickly as a turbo one, but it also won't last as long as a regular commuter because I drive it harder (and it's a boxer engine lol). Yeah it's always better to change it early rather than late, but if it looks clean you don't have to worry too much. Just don't check it after you've turned on the engine or finished using it; when oil flows it wil throw off the actual amount on the oil pan. Thought I was running low one time not realizing this, but you should do it while it's cold after an hour or so. Performance cars with very high-compression engines or bigger turbos/superchagers and especially a lot of HP should be maintained a lot more often.

I'm planning to do oil change every 7000-800km, as I got an old car with an aluminium alloy block engine, famous for being thirsty for oil - seems fine for 1700-2000km after each oil change, but then oil level starts dropping (somewhere between 170-300ml of oil per every 1000km). And I intend to change transmission fluid every 40'000km, just to be safe, after all, it's not that expensive. Yes, in service they did say the same - 50-60k is fine, but the issue is - previous owner left it somewhat neglected, nobody knows it transmission fluid has been changed before at all, thus I sort of need to compensate it, to "flush" it so to speak. I mean a couple of hundred Euros or less every 4-5 years isn't a lot, especially compared to 1000-2000 Euros for fixing or getting a replacement gearbox (belt replacement kit for that CVT alone costs around 650 Euros).

I don’t understand the bias against bmw. I have a 2014 320d at 210000km with regular service every 14/15k km with the certified dealer. I’ve never taken it anywhere else. Most of the miles are highway miles. I’ve literally never had an issue other than a small coolant leak at 200k. Got the leaking plastic component replaced. I don’t even know what the engine light on this thing looks like. It’s been unbelievably reliable! Feels the exact same way as when I first got it. Could I simply be lucky?

Get rid of it now while it’s still ok. All those plastic parts you will have to replace.

We own two Rav 4 Primes. We mostly operate in EV and the gasoline engine does not operate. Miles driven is not a good indicator of engine parts moving with a plug in.

outdated info- you don't need to change synthetic oil every 5-6k ; you can go at least 7.5-10k
