NACA ducts are still used on airplanes...they just aren't for jet engine air intakes. They are still used for various other intakes, like for cooling, though. Take a close look at a typical airliner and you'll probably be able to spot a few of them.

If the side walls are acting as vortex generators, does that imply that they are most effective when the edges are a sharp 90 degrees?

Definitely. In order to work properly NACA ducts also have pretty complex geometry for something that looks so simple. One thing this video didn't quite hit on is that the vorticies are used to suck the boundary layer from the surface in front of the duct and sort of bind it up on each end of the rectangular intake so the large area in the middle of the intake gets higher energy air than a normal submerged intake could get.

so if i turn the vents on my ef xr6 into naca ducts, they will become decent intakes?

If you can route them to where they need to go, then perhaps. At the very least, they'd be good speed holes.

@@AwestrikeFearofGodsFYI, I was taught to use N-A-C-A instead of NACA in Florida, also at the AIAA, so it’s definitely not a foreign thing 😅

Holy shit, dude. Just call it what it is: pressure recovery. We’ve been saying this since I grew up with muscle cars in the late 60s and 70s. Heck, the Mustang Shelby GT500 was the epitome of pressure recovery ducts. I also don’t understand why you didn’t even mention Bernoulli's principle even once, which is essentially what these pressure recovery ducts are based on. What a FAIL of an explanation.
