If you want to go racing, you are going to need a healthy budget. Part of that budget needs to be allocated to safety gear. In this video, I go shopping for everything I need, and have each component explained by a professional.
A huge thank you to Jack for allowing me to film by purchases and answering all of my questions. Thank you also to Dave for fielding my initial enquiry and helping line everything up.

You really can't skimp on safety gear. You hope to never need it, but if (when) you do, you *really* need it. Loving the series so far. Keep it up

To stop your visor fogging up you can get a pinlock visor which has an extra insert to stop fogging.

Pinlock has been a game changer for my motorcycle helmets. I do know there can be certain rules restricting their use though, so I would look into that.

To fix the fogging issue with you visor look into fitting a "Pinlock" system. It adds a 2nd layer inside the visor that has a air gap to the external visor thus preventing fogging. I fitted one to every motorcycle helmet I have owned and they are price less. Even in 0 degree winter mornings I had no fogging. Note that this is not the same as tear offs, though being open wheel you'll want to get those too. I think Sparco have dedicated visors that have their own pinlock system already fitted.

The fogging wont happen when your actually driving as the vents will let air in, sitting still they will fog.

Regarding helmets back in the 1960s' an Australian racing driver called Frank Matich was the first importer for Bell Helmets into Australia. When people questioned him about the price, which was quite a bit more than other helmets at the time, he responded, "If you have a $20 head you will put it in a $20 helmet." He sold heaps of Bell Helmets.
@arthuralford
@arthuralford Жыл бұрын
In the States, it's "If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet." Bell Helmets started using this back in the 50's when most helmets were very cheap, and Bell came in with a safer one that was more expensive

My helmet before this is a Bell. Unfortunately it was a bit bulky and no hans posts so I needed a new one despite it only being a couple of years old.

@@TTRacingYT Thanks for the reply. I wasn't thinking that you should get a Bell, merely that in the 1960s' in Australia there wasn't a lot on offer until Matich started importing them. Best wishes for your future racing - I have always like open wheelers rather than the ubiquitous tin tops.

Hey mate, if your helmet visor keeps on fogging up, grab some rain X. It’s a windscreen defogger solution what works just as well on your visor 👍. Trust me, it makes a huge difference 🔥🔥🔥

One of the biggest problems I had with the Hans was the belts slipping off until someone told me where the shoulder belts mount behind seat cross the belts, so the Left belt mounts to the Right bracket etc, never had a problem after that.

Don't worry about the visor fogging up. It'll clear up while driving and you get air flowing. Should it still fog up while driving, e.g. due to excess humidity in the air, you can probably replace the stock visor for a "Pinlock" visor, which is basically 2 layers of plastic spaced by a tiny air gap. Frequently used by motorcyclists who ride in rainy weather.

Very good episode! Notes from when I took my race license: (many years ago, so I don't know what is truth but this is how I remember it) 1. The HANS needs a bit of tuning with you strapped in and an expert checking the angles or it might rip your neck. 2. They disqualify your suit if it get oil on it. (You can obviously wash it, but it's a race day ruined unless you have a spare) 3. Any modification of the safety equipment must be done by a pro. (Including sponsor patches on the suit and stickers on the helmet)

If you’re looking for a HANS device, it’s important to note there are differences in the ‘recline’ angle. For most closed car applications a 20 degree recline angle suits. For open wheelers the recline angle increases to 30 degrees to suit the much more laid down driving position.

When CAMS came up with the 5 year use-by date on belts they admitted (under duress) that there was no actual data to support their claims. But still... The big problem with a fixed period like 5 years is that you usually only get 4 years. (I bet the shop still has 2022 belts on the shelf) Helmets at the top levels can be worse because sometimes they want a standards date and not a manufactured date. In two years time they may want the 2025 standard and not the 2020.

What karting were you doing Michael? I haven’t bumped into you at EC, the Farm, Lithgow etc. Anyway a quick note to thank you for opening my eyes to F1000, now in my 40's I had been thinking about what full size racing to look into, an older radical was looking okay but still not quite what I was after. The F1000 cars look like a great option. And with yours having a 1300, it will be so well suited to the long SMSP straight!

Interesting hearing about the safety gear. All in all not too bad price wise considering what you've got. When it comes to seat belts, providing there are no restrictions on hardware (buckles etc), consider having them rewebbed rather than replacing as a whole.

The visor is fogging up because you are stationary. You never see drivers sitting there with their visors closed unless they have a helmet fan pumping air into the helmet. Once your out on track there should be enough airflow to run it closed.

I don't know what the rules are for cars but to stop fogging in a motorbike helmet racing I've always used a 'respro foggy' mask and it has never failed me. It directs the air down and out the lid. Remember to keep all the vents closed so no water gets in. Also wear a beanie hat if it looks like rain during the raceday to keep your hair dry.

Interesting, your head almost fully blocks the air intake at the top. Is that the case for everyone, or are you just taller than the average person? I also wondered whether that same air intake has some kind of rollhoop. If you happen to roll over, it looks like your helmet will be pretty close to the ground.
