I also think that due to them having cars that have the steering wheel on the correct side of the car, their cars can't be exported, se they just stay i the UK

Drive on the left side which makes export difficult, plus yearly inspection which older cars will most likely fail and left with couple hundred repair bill every year.

I live in France and second hand cars are very expensive here too, I always thought it’s down to the fact that in the UK people trade in their cars more often than in France so dealers have to be competitive with pricing in the UK. Most French will happily keep their car for 10+ years.

Also there is huge demand for second-hand cars with wheel on left side in east europe, where owning second hand cars just makes economic sense (cheap labour/low wages). I guess 2/3 of luxury cars registered there are imports :)

UK has a company car culture which in most European countries doesn't exists. You see hundred of thousands of cars come off their 3 year or so leases and onto the second hand car market in the UK, this does not happen in France or Spain. I think the UK market is just more buoyant with more cars being bought and sold overall. Take e.g. sales numbers for new BMWs or Mercedes behind their home country Germany, they sell the most in UK compared to any other EU country and by a very long mile too.
@thomasj5722

UK cars have no export market for most of their cars because of the right hand drive so there is no demand for old cars. Where specially here in the south of Europe there is a big market for exporting old rust free cars. I live in Spain and i rarely see many old luxury or "fun" cars they have all been exported to northern Europe.
@joebloggs4191
@joebloggs4191 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasj5722 I don't think this is quite true. When I was in the UK I was in the car trade just like this chap in the videos and I worked with a number of traders who regularly exported prestige / luxury cars from the UK to Cyprus and some Asian countries where like the UK they are RHD, in fact some of them exclusively exported and didn't deal with the home market. Still probably not as big as an export market as say Germany has with Europe since more countries are LHD compared to RHD but in my 15 years here and speaking with a number of car dealers, cars are hardly ever exported from Spain to northern europe it's usually always the other way around with many coming from Germany Belgium etc to Spain. Whilst we might have drier weather here the Spanish just don't give two hoots about their cars and nearly all of them whilst not rusty are in terrible condition otherwise with mega miles therefore not 'export material' and the reason why you don't see fun luxury cars here (unless you are in certain locations like Marbella) is simply because the Spanish don't buy them, most can't afford them which is why you mainly see run of the mill cars. This is the reason why I bought my first second hand car from Germany the second I bought brand new in Spain and the third I imported second hand from the UK. As mentioned in my previous comment the reason why there are so many cars to choose from and low prices in the UK is to do with the huge number sold (huge fleet sales) compared to most countries in Europe including here in Spain. When you look at the sales numbers for prestige motors like BMW Mercedes Porsche you will find the UK to trounce all EU countries except Germany.

I think you're better off with either a convertible or better still, a sedan (or saloon car). Even a coupe will be fine, you won't need to spend a lot to get a convertible roof working or maintained. If you're not doing serious offroading or you're not in an area with bad roads, you really don't need a 4X4 SUV. It's just too complicated (even the more reliable ones from Toyota). I was going to say something about fuel economy, but since the car you're going for isn't going to be your daily driver, it's not a big deal.

Those are all and there are no more letters. Greetings from Valencia.

I did that in 2009 with a Peugeot 406 it cost more to re register it than it was worth, but still cheaper than hire cars, at 24 years old last year I had to let it go the air con didn’t work or the heater and it wasn’t worth fixing. I looked into bringing another car but now we’re not in the EU it’s more expensive and complicated. Doing what Matt did albeit at a more mundane level I gave up and bought a new Dacia duster, boring I know but 5 year guarantee , no ITV for 4 years it’s got all the bits and pieces on it. A Bentley convertible would have been nice but fund’s didn’t permit (just joking owning a car like that here would worry the life out of me).

About environmental stickers, this comment might help you. There are 4 stickers, '0' 'ECO' 'C' 'B', from ''less pulluting to more''. 0 = BEV or PHE with more than 50 km on electric ECO = the rest of PHEV, HEV, or CNG conversions of petrol engines. C = Diesels from 2015 and petrol from 2006 B = diesels from 2006 and petrol from 2001

I live in Portugal and the prices seem almost similar if a little cheaper believe it or not. Over here its crazy, because they finance over 10 years mostly everything holds its value eg my Honda PCX was €3300 new, 4 years later with 27k kms I sold it for €2500 madness! Also every car here is advertised as having full extras😂 often the most basic spec has this term applied. Another thing is the number of owners is never mentioned. Paintwork or bodywork is so cheap here most cars have been tidied up at a small cost. Another thing I notice is they can have high specs like often having xenons on old cars etc but the weird one is almost all big executive cars are manual. Ive lost count of the amount of 730d 740d 530d are all manual. The tax on anything over 2 litres here is very high so those types of cars are rarer but still can be found, also mad models like 745d that you don’t get in the UK are a nice spot.

As I'm spanish, I'm gonna sum up how spanish stickers work, cause it's not so evident. From the best to the worst: -0:electric cars/hybrids with more than 40km of electric range. -Eco:hybrids/lpg -C:Petrol cars newer than 2006 or diesels newer than 2014 -B:petrol cars newer than 2001 or diesels newer than 2006. -No sticker... The years are aprox, but it's ok to have a global idea. Good video btw. Is funny to see how you analize the spanish market 😂.

Moved over to Spain in 2019 and bought a 2011 Seat leon copa 1.2 for 8500 euros. Within 3 days you wouldn't believe the amount of dings and scrapes it collected. They just don't care which is why they hang onto cars until they fall apart. The only saving grace is they depreciate at a slower rate so its all relative.

Cars are an arm and a leg here in Spain, We lived in Mallorca for 37 years before moving to la Cala De Mijas a couple of years ago, we just needed a change of scenery and liked the idea of not being limited to island life, expensive ferries and sky high flight prices in the summer etc, anyway cars were a lot cheaper there than here on the mainland, low mileage is quoted here 180,000km it’s a joke very rare to find service history to, in a nutshell very expensive to buy second hand.

There are three main reasons for the price difference: Although HMRC have made it much less tax efficient these days, there used to be a huge company car culture in the UK so people got conditioned into getting rid of a new car after 3 years. If the brake lights were the "wrong shape" the demand fell through the floor and the resale price with it. (Curiously, the Spanish car companies are trying to stimulate the same approach by pushing, often via the banks, the idea of leasing cars instead of buying them outright.) Secondly, without all the salt on the road, the cars don't rot, so a ten year old car can still look pretty decent and, if properly maintained, can easily give the owner another ten good years. Thirdly, because there's quite a big chunk of tax to pay every time a second hand car is sold, people aren't in the habit, culturally, of regularly switching their cars.

Just down the road from you in San Pedro de Alcantra where we have an apt. I sourced a Spanish car on Ebay in the UK. Its a grey Discovery Sport with 7 seats...albeit the back is tight. It belonged to a Boat Captain who was returning to the Uk. It had 23000 kms and i got it at Uk price. Low mileage because it spent most of its time parked up and, because he is a boatist, it was kept immaculately. 4 years on its got 36k on but its probably worth similar money over here...so a bargain. You are right about prices being linked to condition and usage rather than year...the lack of year on the reg plate is the reason there. We park it in parking spaces, not the road due to the touchy feely parking of the locals that you mention. Keep it at the airport...ExPats Parking look after it and are there so we walk off the plane and are on the road 15 mins later. I cannot describe the difference it makes to the journey. Buy so.ething in the UK Matt and take it down there. You wont regelret it.

Hi Matt, I live in Spain, Tenerife to be exact. The new sticker to indicate what environment emissions the vehicle uses is bought at the post office, we were told the sticker must be displayed by the 4th of June , so far I've only seen one car displaying the sticker and that is my partner. I haven't even seen a police car displaying one. The lady in the post office said later this year there will be areas mostly towns or city''s where certain cars won't be allowed only EV's, it's another scam. a few weeks ago I was in the UK and my partner came over to go to my uncle's funeral he was flying to Manchester and had a ticket for the Monday he was told in the airport there is a delay until 12:30am in the end his flight was 9:00am the Tuesday morning and it was due to French air control on strike, strange because I don't ever remember flying over France from here it's normally over the coast of Portugal and just scraping past the north of Spain, he should have asked the pilot to just drive round France. Lol. I can't believe the second hand car price difference between the UK and Spain, if only the Spanish looked after their cars thanks for a great video and all the best... you don't have to fly over France, but you might fly into their airspace which would be affected. Also, maybe the flight was delayed because the flight was coming from Belgium, which was delayed arriving before flying onto the UK. Most low cost airlines do not do just the back and forth to the same country/airport, it could go London to Milan, Milan to Budapest, Budapest to Brussels, and Brussels to Tenerife all in one day.

The CLK & ML V6's & V8 from 2006-10 have the problem with the balancer shaft or idler on V8s so you'd be better off going for the MK1 or a pre-facelift CLK. The 4.5 v8 Cayenne suffers from coolant system leaks, normally in the V which can be expensive. Honestly thought he CLK430 and the Wrangler were the best two on the list, can't see either of them depreciating too much.

Hey Matt. As a local resident (Costa del Sol) I will explain the stickers story for you. They are introduced all over Spain and they go like this... The best one to have according to this environmental satire is 0 (zero): it is for EVs of various types, including plugin hybrids if they have at least 40kms EV mode capacity. Next level is called ECO: all hybrids apart from the ones mentioned before plus new and newish cars with LPG or GNC. Then there is C: Euro 6 diesel (as of 2014) and Euro 4,5,6 petrol cars (as of 2006). Last one is B: petrol cars from 2001 and newer (Euro 3) and diesels from 2006 and newer (Euro 4, 5). All other cars (petrol older than 2001 and diesel older than 2006) fall into the A category, which is in fact the worst in this ranking and they already have restricted access to some metropolitan areas (Zonas de Bajas Emisiones).

I have a "holiday" car in Spain too and their idea of service history is non existent!! They just tell you "yes mate, always serviced!" All websites and photos are a joke! Ended up getting a 2006 Dodge Caliber for 3500E as a beach car and it is HORRIBLE! Completely tidy inside and out but plastic EVERYWHERE. However, it had proper FULL service history and a VW diesel 2.0 TDI with manual gearbox... hopefully, it will get me to the beach for a few more summers. Love the channel!!

Interesting. I watch another KZfaq channel called "the ex-pawers" about two Brits who moved to Spain to live in a rusty old motorhome. The wanted to upgrade to something like a van which they could convert into a motorhome. Nothing but overpriced high mileage rubbish. I reckon you need to move your business from Britain to Spain, import British cars for half the price from the UK and convert them them to LHD and flog them for twice the price in Spain....you'd be a multi millionaire in no time! 😜Love the channel, keep em coming and hope you eventually get home! 👍😎

Porsche Cayenne 955 is the better engine 957 direct injection has carbon valve issues. Turbo 955 no bore scoring issues. air suspension is reliable as its incased, not like the range rover system. Each time you get back to Spain you will look forward to driving your Pepper 955 ...PS they are fantastic off road but tell to many people

Come to Tenerife we have 7.5% vat but everything is way more expensive. They operate as a cartel and nothing is done about it.. Cars are dear but motorbikes are ridiculously over priced. Plus the Spanish don't maintain anything so everything you buy is knackered (although advertised as showroom condition)

The 4 environmental stickers in Spain are B, C, ECO and 0, B being the “worst” and 0 being the “best”. ECO is for non plug-in hybrids and GLPs. A brand new normal petrol ICE would have a C.

After getting ripped off by GOLDCAR with a Brand New Mercedes that broke down I decided to start taking a car over from the UK Every year for 6 months. Bought a great £1700 Toyota Previa 7 Seat Front / Rear AC, fridge etc. But that became expensive swapping over every 6 months. So I looked at local dealers car (who I know) and auto scout . Silly Prices for high milers. So, I imported a car we had had in our Family since new, Audi A3 1.9TDie 62mpg, covered 56,000 miles. Just managed to get ITV in 2019 to beat the Import Tax as a non Resident

Hola Matt, So about the stickers, NO it's not like you say. There are only a few. If you don't have the environmental sticker (which can happen) you can't run your car under certain circumstances. BUT it does not go from A to F, it starts (lowest is) at B, then C, then ECO and then 0. Now, cars are expensive in Spain. But Barcelona and Madrid being more dense populated have higher prices (more demand means higher price). Being in Malaga you could buy a Gibraltar car at UK price? not sure. But the car would have UK plates and UK wheeldrive placed (on the passenger's side xD) and you could even bring it maybe back to the UK if needed. Not sure about Gibraltar-UK though. Prices here s4ck, specially in the last years as most of us buy 2nd hand cars instead of new ones (they are nuts expensive) so the 2nd hand cars prices came up a lot (i don't know maybe 50%?). YEP ITV is the MOT and it depends on how old is your car you'll need to pass it under certain time. A car 10 years old needs to pass it once a year. New cars are exempt to it for the first 4 years, and if it's 4 to 9 years old it has to pass it every 2 years. Weird but.... Uhm I'd say being in Malaga to check a car that has not been outside, due to the very strong sun they have there and the salitre (sea salt) and humidity, if possible. Ah yes! Last thing, yes we use Autoscout but usually is quite pricey there, you can check also coches.net and we are using now a lot an app and website named Wallapop. You should consider those places too. Wallapop being a 2nd hand market place allow you to throw stupidly silly offers to sellers who, logicaly, get mad at your offer. But you can do it. If the seller is desperate, well... it might work. You buy me a beer to thank me if it works when in BCN. (but I see now the price of a Yeti you have on a video, Yeti's cost 2-3 times more than in UK, and so on). Okay, that's all i needed to share. Enjoy the Malaga Sun and it's 40ish degrees xDD

5:39 For reference, “retrovisores eléctricos plegables” is “electric folding mirrors”. The word for car mirrors (retrovisor) is different from the generic word for mirror in Spanish (espejo) because it describes what they’re for - looking behind you. Also, the bit in the first pic for that E46 would translate more like “what are you waiting for?”

Yep. Prices are mad. Especially 4x4s I've been trying to sell a mate's Vitara 2009 for the last 6 months here in Barcelona and none of the 3 viewers have bought it. The idea is to make this into a video of how to dell a car in Spain. Bit unlucky as things have gone wrong including the turbo last weekend that'll set him back about 1300 euros! 2009. 208000kms at 5990€. And that's the lowest price on Wallapop. Difficult market. People know too much and many turn up with a mechanic, which means you won't sell it!!

One last idea, why don't you Go for a Boxter? I mean they aren't that expensive, engine is "big" enough for me and it's cabrio. BMWs here have always been stupidly expensive due to being considered a high status cars. You can also look for maybe some Audi Cabriolet like the 80 was it? Or similar if exists. I think some of those had big 5 cylinder engines? Not sure. As a silly idea.

It costs a lot of money to do that now we’ve left the EU , you now have to pay 21% vat now which you didn’t before. Also headlamps need to be changed unless they can be converted, and the car is valued at what it would be worth in Spain which is a lot higher.

Buying an used car in Spain is a nerve racking experience, as people don't mantain their cars properly, and half- truths ad descriptions abound. We're not a country of liars, simply people assume that an old car will have necesarilly issues to repair ...the upside is that serious rust is rarely a problem, but perhaps it would be better to look for something a bit away from the coast. A 20 year old car that has spent its life in Cordoba, Jaen or Sevilla will not have a speck of rust anywhere.

I think cars in the UK are mostly excluded from the trade in cheaper cars to Eastern Europe. I live in Germany and most dealers won't offer cars at the cheaper end to private customers to avoid the warranty requirements. They mostly get exported on the back of a transporter. This effectively splits the market to cheap/export and expensive/consumer
